¡°A City in a Park¡±: Chattanooga, Tennessee, Is North America¡¯s First National Park City
North America is home to hundreds of national parks ¡ª and now, . ? Earlier this month, Chattanooga, Tennessee, became the first on the continent to be named as such by the U.K. nonprofit National Park City Foundation. The third in the world, it follows London and Adelaide, Australia, which nabbed the designations in 2019 and 2021, respectively. ? Chattanooga¡¯s recognition was hard-earned: The journey toward it began two years ago, and after rallying residents¡¯ support, the city council passed a resolution in 2024 establishing an official campaign to go after the status. With a population of around 190,000, the city undertook ¡°a community-driven effort to celebrate, elevate, and conserve¡± the culture, people, and places that make it unique, per the interactive portfolio it submitted for consideration. ? On April 3, the Foundation announced its decision, citing Chattanooga¡¯s ¡°remarkable story¡± of transformation from one of the country¡¯s most polluted cities in the 1970s to a biodiversity hot spot and unparalleled outdoor destination. Indeed, Outside Magazine previously named it the best town in the U.S., twice.

Philanthropist Donates $100M to 350 Rhode Island Nonprofits to Honor Late Husband

Barbara Papitto has been busy giving back over the last six years ¡ª she¡¯s donated in that time period, every dollar in honor of her late husband, Ralph Papitto, who died in 2019. ? Ralph, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, told Barbara to enjoy the money when he died. And for her, that meant giving it away to those in need. In 2020, she founded to support organizations committed to serving local communities via skills training programs, literacy initiatives, entrepreneurship efforts, and more. Last year, the foundation helped create the first transitional housing program for women and children in Central Falls, Rhode Island ¡ª Barbara is pictured (right) at an event announcing that initiative. ? And most recently, she donated $1 million to fund a health clinic at Amos House, a recovery-based shelter service for unhoused people. ¡°We need to be in the community like we have been to be responsive to any kind of need that comes forward,¡± Barbara told The Boston Globe last month, adding: ¡°You can¡¯t help someone get a better job if they¡¯re not being fed.¡± ? But whether she¡¯s packaging books to send to children or attending a press conference, Ralph is at the heart of it all. ¡°Everything I do,¡± she told Providence¡¯s NBC affiliate, ¡°I do it with his name.¡±

This Fisherman Is Hoping to Put Invasive Crab on the Menu
Gabe Souza/Portland Portland Press Herald via Getty Images |
As green crabs continue to wreak havoc on New England fisheries, one fisherman is tackling the challenge head-on ¡ª , with hopes of turning the resilient crustacean into table fare. ¡°You can¡¯t kill these things. I mean, we¡¯ve heard stories of them coming back from a frozen state and crawling around restaurants,¡± Jeff Ladd, the ambitious fisherman in question, told CBS News. ? His aim is to help restore habitats that would otherwise be destroyed by the crabs, which consume native crabs, clams, and young lobsters. Combine warming waters with few natural predators and there¡¯s little keeping the species in check. That¡¯s where Ladd comes in: On a good day, he can catch about 2,000 pounds of green crab. ? After he catches them, the next step is to turn the crab into tasty cuisine (that mostly looks like seafood broth right now). Last year, Sharon St. Ours, whose family has been in the seafood industry for over four decades, turned 5,000 pounds of crab into 1,000 gallons of broth for commercial kitchens. ? ¡°The idea here is to get some restaurants to use it, or some food manufacturing companies to use it as a flavoring in order to utilize a lot of them, and then and bring more money to the fisheries,¡± said St. Ours. She added: ¡°It definitely has a delicious flavor.¡±
