Gracias! In Generous Gift, Spain Offers to Restore New Orleans’ Historic Tiles

On cobblestone corners throughout New Orleans’ French Quarter, you’ll find unique ceramic tile markers that don’t look like your average street sign. That’s because the colorful, intricate signs were given to New Orleans by the Spanish government in 1959, to commemorate the city’s Spanish colonial era in the latter half of the 18th century.

The tiles, totaling 156, were originally handmade in Talavera de la Reina at the workshop of a family of famed Spanish ceramicists. But over six decades after they were first installed, they’re showing their age, so at no charge, the New Orleans mayor’s office announced last week.

The special cultural gift is thanks to ?ngeles Moreno Bau, the Spanish Ambassador to the United States, as well as the Spanish Consulate and tile manufacturer ADEX. French Quarter property owners can apply for free replacements of historic Spanish tile street signs through May 9.

Holly Connor Is Blind, Autistic, and Inspiring Others: “Music Is My Superpower”

Holly Connor has always stood out from the crowd. At 2 years old, the age many little ones are just starting to bop along to the beat of a song, Connor could play any tune by ear on the piano. By 3, she was matching notes with perfect pitch. And at 4, she surprised her parents by belting out a Lisa Loeb track with full vibrato. Connor was also born blind, and she was diagnosed with autism as a toddler.

Fast forward to today, and the 20-year-old has over 100 performances under her belt, taking to the stage in plays, musicals, operas, revues, and more. She’s sung the national anthem at a number of sporting events, including a Chicago White Sox game last summer, and she recently sang a selection of songs and accompanied herself on piano at the Missouri History Museum.

“Music is my superpower,” Connor told Nice News in an interview ahead of World Autism Awareness Day, adding: “Performing has always made me very, very happy.” , including how she’s helping others unlock the same joy that she derives through music and self-expression.

Paris Hilton Is Helping Women-Owned Businesses Begin Again After Eaton Fire

Just two months after Paris Hilton watched her Malibu home , she’s already helping others rebuild their lives. The reality star and entrepreneur is harnessing her nonprofit, 11:11 Media Impact, to offer grants of up to $25,000 to women-owned businesses impacted by the Eaton Fire.

“These women are the backbone of their communities,” Hilton said in a statement. “Through , we’re not just helping them rebuild — we’re investing in their futures, their families, and their neighborhoods.”

The recipients include childcare centers, bakeries, bookshops, dance studios, and salons, the Associated Press reports. “Seeing the overwhelming response from women entrepreneurs in need of support showed us how important and urgent the need is to help this community rebuild,” said Hilton. Her nonprofit, , expanded the program from 11 recipients to 50 after applications poured in.

Annisa Faquir’s grandmother founded the diner 50 years ago, and Faquir and her mother, who took over the Altadena business in 2018, knew they wanted to rebuild after the fire.
