Survivor 48¡¯ recap: Jeff incorrectly calls the immunity challenge, while one juror takes a stand (literally)
?on??48,?Kamilla Karthigesu?was ready to make her move against the "core four" in a play to get?Joe Hunter?out, and her closest ally?Kyle Fraser?was willing to let her do it ¡ª even though he's also closely aligned with Joe. When Joe won immunity the plan was off and?Star Toomey?became the universal target, keeping the "core four" intact and leaving only three on the outside looking in.
This week, a plan is once again hatched to target the players controlling the game, but immunity, advantages and a general reluctance to betray friendships may still stand in the way of bringing it to fruition. Read on for our recap of?Survivor?Season 48, Episode 11, titled "Coconut Etiquette," which aired Wednesday, May 7 on?S
The players still competing to become "sole Survivor" at the start of the episode were:?Eva Erickson,?Joe Hunter,?Kamilla Karthigesu,?Kyle Fraser,?Mary Zheng,?Mitch Guerra, and?Shauhin Davari. The members of the jury that will decide the winner are:?Cedrek McFadden,?Chrissy Sarnowsky,?David Kinne, and?Star Toomey.
"No one's gonna wanna keep around the person who doesn't know proper coconut etiquette!"?¡ª Kamilla KarthigesuThough she was spared through another vote, Mary returned to camp after Tribal Council with the realization that she'd once again have to "crawl out from this pit all over again" to find new footing in the game. Her plan this time was a pitch to Kamilla and Mitch that if they want to break up the Joe and Eva pair (which they say they do) then they should do it next while she's still in the game to do it with them so that they have a better shot of doing it without their own games on the line. Kamilla was particularly interested in the pitch, but knew that she'd have to convince Kyle and Shauhin to be on board with it, too. When Mary approached Kyle with the same pitch, he was all ears because it was something he was already wrestling with in his own mind. While he's been telling Joe that the four is who he wants to go to the end with and he trusts them, he's also aware that Joe is seen as being in control of the game and it would not be a winning situation to sit next to Joe at the end. His personal issue was coming down to the "strong emotional connection" made with Joe and Eva that he told Mary makes it "very difficult to even consider making a move right now." But the truth is that he wasn't being honest with Mary about wanting to make the same move because he wasn't sure if he could "trust her entirely." While Mary did have some ears in the tribe perked up to her plan, she damaged her reputation by not following "proper coconut etiquette" during the day by chopping them all up to eat instead of saving some ripe ones to be eaten later in the game. She told Eva that no one is going to take?her?on a reward so she might as well eat as many coconuts as she can because it's the only food?she's?going to get. "They have no reason to doubt me, I've always told the truth"?¡ª Eva EricksonBefore the final seven could test their skills (and luck) at another immunity or reward challenge, a boat unexpectedly arrived at camp asking for one among them to leave and go on a journey. Because everyone wanted the chance to go, they decided to draw rocks to determine that Eva would be the one with the chance to possibly earn an advantage. For her journey, Eva played a game which was more like a challenge where she'd have to stack four rows of blocks in a circle in order to protect her vote that would be otherwise lost if she failed to complete the task in the required time. If she wanted to earn the Knowledge Is Power advantage then she'd have to stack eight rows high. With two advantages already in her possession and wanting to ensure that her alliance retains the power in voting numbers, Eva decided to stop successfully at four rows rather than going for a third advantage. Upon Eva's return to camp and her truthful recounting of the journey, she made the mistake of more or less gloating about how she was the last person to need the Knowledge Is Power advantage because that's the one any of them could have used to steal her idol. It prompted Mary to reignite her pitch on the urgency for everyone to break up Joe and Eva now rather than later. Shauhin listened to Mary's argument, but privately he was the least tempted by it because he expressed confidence that he's played a stronger game than Joe and would be formidable against him in front of the jury anyway. Once again, any plan for a big move hinged on who won the next immunity challenge. For this one the final seven competed in an obstacle course with the added bonus of earning a sushi lunch as reward. At the end of the course was a scrambled word puzzle that they had to assemble in a free-standing arch ¡ª notoriously one of the hardest puzzles to accomplish in recent seasons. Joe was the first to successfully get an arch to stand on its own, but his word "Gotfunbetrale" was incorrect. Kyle finished next with the correct word "Unforgettable," but it was incorrect on the backside. Before Kyle could figure out what was wrong with his solution, Kamilla and Joe were both hot on his tail and had a photo finish. After an incorrect call from??¡ª "But Joe got there first, Joe win ¡ª no! I'm wrong, your puzzle's wrong! Kamilla's puzzle's right, Kamilla wins!" ¡ª Kamilla became the winner of immunity and reward. As the reward winner, Kamilla got to invite two people to join her. She said that Mitch has had the least amount of food of everyone so she chose him and then as her second choice she picked Eva.
"I'm gonna pull a little bit of Russel Hantz, a little bit of villain"?¡ª Mary ZhengFeeling comfortable in front of Mitch and Kamilla at the reward feast, Eva disclosed her truth that they'd all be going for Mary this time and that she's saving her idol for the last chance to use it. She added that if she wins immunity for herself that time then she will play her idol for Joe no matter what. That helped solidify for Kamilla that she and Kyle have to turn on Joe, but that the trick for them will be deciding when. Knowing her back is against the wall in case no one pulls the trigger on getting Joe, Mary decided to "cause a bit of chaos" by openly telling Joe that he's the biggest threat in the game and she'll be voting for him. Mary's declaration ignited the bit of paranoia Joe was hoping to avoid by going to Shauhin, Mitch and Kyle and telling them that he's scared Mary has an idol and he'll go home so he wants to write down someone else's name. Shauhin explained to him that he can't do that or even say that because whoever he says he is writing the name of is then incentivized to join Mary and write Joe's name, too, as well as showing them that "they're next." Shauhin became so angry at Joe's paranoia because it reminded him of how many times his own name has been written down and he remained calm, but here is Joe freaking out over one vote in the one week of three he doesn't have an immunity necklace on. At an emotionally charged Tribal Council where Jeff addressed what the game means to each of them and their loved ones back home, it was underscored that "everyone is driven by their own agenda right now." Eva and Joe argued that there are people still wanting to play in a "team element" which, again, brought back the concept that there are people left out of the group plan being decided by the "core four." Despite Joe's fears, Mary did not have an idol to play and no one else did either. The votes were cast: Mary, Joe, Mary, Mary, Mary. Four was enough to secure the majority against her (though the other two were as well) and so Mary was added to the jury with David giving her an awkwardly triumphant standing ovation from the sidelines as she walked out. Next time on?Survivor...Joe realizes that "something's cooking" around camp and his job is to figure out who: Kyle, Kamilla, or Shauhin?
