a fellow named Dave Richards has a Youtube channel called “Old Steam Powered Machine Shop”. It has always been one of my favorites. In his latest he shows a “here is my shop and these are my machines” sort of vid and is to me AWESOME. if interested, this is the latest video
If you like it, check others on his channel.. it is worth it. -Bart |
Have watched one of them several times. I sure would like to rebuild that damn knocking rattling steam engine. Steam engines in good shape make little to no noise at all but his sure does. He has a lose big and little end bearing in the rod and I think the main crank bearings need to be re-babbited. All you should hear from a good steam engine is the bark of the exhaust. And in some cases you can actually hear the piston sliding up and down the cylinder bore. Dennis

you guys that don't know I have been having a devil of a time with my email service. Oh and the video is of a 1/12 scale model of an engine built in 1839 at the West point Foundry in Circle NY then moved to Cromwell Pennsylvania were it powered a air pump for a coke blast furnace at a iron smelter from 1841 till 1927. One of my hobbies guys I build model steam engines. Dennis -----Original Message----- From: [email protected]

Only you…would notice. :) Dennis you are ONE of a kind! Ya gotta admit he has a damn fun old shop. My grandad had a line pulley arrangement in his shop back int eh 50s but that was a while back. This guy still knows the tricks. Heck I have a belt staple (and a single old row of staples) just in case :) I KNOW what they should sound like but dang HE STILL RUNS THEM! give him credit!…. God speed my dear friend.

the fact that he still uses all them old machines. You did not mention the video I had in my post did you not get it? Spent the last two weeks in Florence and I took about 80 percent of the parts to a that SB lathe you helped me move. There all painted and starting assembly of sub assemblies. How something so old has survived in basically brand new condition is a mystery just like three of my Daltons. Have not a clue as to what I will do with this lathe but I am sure enjoying restoring it. It's fun to find something that's 87 years old that's like the day they built it. As I mentioned this lathe came from the prototype shop or the Engineering shop as I have been told it was called. Anyway this is the shop that worked developing the new models South Bend was building. That explains all the odd parts as some of them look to have come from a older model that was already assembled and parts taken from it for the one they were working on. Anyway guys sorry for Bart and my conversations on this site but our email servers hate each other and will not let us talk by regular email. Hope you guys enjoyed the little video of them model steam engine I built. It is the most difficult one I have built and there was over 200 hours of shop time building it. To say it was a challenging project would be an understatement. Dennis -----Original Message----- From: [email protected]

Dennis: no I did not see it. I have replied or emailed you many many times but alas they seem to go to the great beyond. Would love to come see you again but not till next month when I can afford the gas and maybe to rent a flat bed trailer. Your restorations look better then factory new by the way… Your shop is like the ultimate Dalton Mecca. On Sep 20, 2021, at 7:11 AM, Dennis Turk <dennis.turk2@...> wrote: |

My last shop had a 16" shaper used only for a blind 3" key . Took about 20 hrs a piece at $500 a pop. Also had a baby planer used to machine the edges of a 6' cylindrical mesh basket for assembly. Could do 2+ a day for $150 a piece. Shop closed a while back.? Don't know who does the key now but the last quote on the basket was $5000 + each on a machining center. Larry
