Another update from me and my Dalton 9 x 4 serial 90.05.? I'm looking for the nut for my compound slide or to find out what the thread count and size on that nut so that I can replace it. it's got some slop in it possibly the screw too although it does look pretty decent and since the nut is brass and I'm assuming since it's the softer metal that is going to wear first. Any insight would be much appriciated

Good Morning Joshua ? OK the cross slide compound slide and tail stock on all Daltons lathes us a 10 pitch acme thread.? Cross slide and compound slide screws on all Dalton lathes are 7/16 diameter.? The original lead screw nuts on all Daltons was made of bronze not brass.? Brass is a very poor material for lead screw nuts as it will wear very rapidly.?? In accessing the back lash or excessive play on any compound or cross slide lead screw and nut first? you have to eliminate all back lash or end play in the lead screw.? Just a little end play will result in a lot of back lash in the screw to nut fit.? The nut on the compound is a fixed thread were as the cross slide nut on a Lot 6 or Dalton 9 has a back lash adjusting feature. ??Also the cross slide screw and nut as well as the tail stock screw? and nut are left hand thread.? The compound on the other hand is a right hand thread.? One other point in making a new nut for your Dalton the taps used for making nuts of bronze are different than the ones made for other materials.? I? have a set for bronze as well as some used for other materials like brass or steel.? Bronze is very difficult to tap acme threads in were as brass or mild steel is much easier. ?Cutting the acme thread in bronze is much easier if done on a lathe using a single point threading tool though a 7/16 size thread is a bit difficult to do.? Hope this helps a little Jashua.? Pictures are ones? I took while I was working on Gregg Fosmarks of Issaquah Washington Lot 6 Dalton.? Later on I purchased the lathe from Gregg and I still have it today.? You will also note different dial rings on this lathe.? These were made by the original owner back in the 30’s when the lathe was used by and old tool maker in Seattle Washington.? I did how ever install the needle thrust bearings on all lead screws when I made the new nuts for the compound and cross slide.? For a long time we thought these dial rings were factory but after finding a new serial number Lot 6 it was equipped with the small standard dial rings Dalton used. Never understood why? Dennis, ?Both my lot 4 and 6 compounds have LH screws, when I turn the handle clockwise the feed is away from the handle (in), I think the TS screw is also, as I only know of one lathe in my shop with a RH screw for the TS, it's big, almost 5 tons and you pull the handwheel towards the front, or counter clockwise, which works well when drilling with big drills. So so sorry about your thoughts on right or left hand screws.? One has to look at how the screw is mounted.? On the cross slide the screw is stationary and the nut is on the moving cross slide.? So when you turn it to the right the cross slide moves away from you so that is a left hand screw.? But if you look at your compound slide you will see that the screw moves with the top casting and the nut is in the base so it’s a right hand screw as the screw moves with the top slide casting. ? You are right on the compound screw being RH Dennis.
BTW, Ranier, I'll post a photo of that compound base, screw nut dial and handle I have. You figure out the shipping and customs etc and paypal me and I'll send it free as far as my part goes. We'll want to send it Uniited States Postal Service flat rate box but I have no idea what the "real" rate is to Germany.

Those of you with a Lot 2 Dalton need to know that the compound lower casting as well as the top casting are unique to that model.? Lot 3 and later lathes used a totally different arrangement for securing the compound slide base casting to the cross slide. Also for you that are not aware of it Lot 2 lathes only swing 6 inches not 7 ? like Lot 3 4 and 5 lathes.? There are almost no parts that interchange from a Lot 2 to the later models.? They look similar but that’s about all that’s the same.? Lot 2 lathes are very unique.? Picture is of a Lot 2 compound.? There is a spud sticking up from the cross slide and the bottom casting of the compound slide rest over it and the cap screw you see is what locks the compound slide to the cross slide.? Not a very secure arrangement so figure that is why ?it was changed with the introduction of the Lot 3 model. You are right on the compound screw being RH Dennis.
BTW, Ranier, I'll post a photo of that compound base, screw nut dial and handle I have. You figure out the shipping and customs etc and paypal me and I'll send it free as far as my part goes. We'll want to send it Uniited States Postal Service flat rate box but I have no idea what the "real" rate is to Germany.

So so sorry about your thoughts on right or left hand screws.? One has to look at how the screw is mounted.? On the cross slide the screw is stationary and the nut is on the moving cross slide.? So when you turn it to the right the cross slide moves away from you so that is a left hand screw.? But if you look at your compound slide you will see that the screw moves with the top casting and the nut is in the base so it’s a right hand screw as the screw moves with the top slide casting.

?Both my lot 4 and 6 compounds have LH screws, when I turn the handle clockwise the feed is away from the handle (in), I think the TS screw is also, as I only know of one lathe in my shop with a RH screw for the TS, it's big, almost 5 tons and you pull the handwheel towards the front, or counter clockwise, which works well when drilling with big drills.

OK, I just looked at both cross feed screws and both are again 7/16-10 LH acme. I have one here if you want it, both the screw and the nut.

Is your lathe a lot 4 or a lot 6? My lot 4 and lot 6 both have 7/16-10 LH screws. I didn't look to see if they were square or acme but I assume they are acme.

Another update from me and my Dalton 9 x 4 serial 90.05.? I'm looking for the nut for my compound slide or to find out what the thread count and size on that nut so that I can replace it. it's got some slop in it possibly the screw too although it does look pretty decent and since the nut is brass and I'm assuming since it's the softer metal that is going to wear first. Any insight would be much appriciated

Pretty weird, lot 2 compound base drops right onto my lot 4.

Those of you with a Lot 2 Dalton need to know that the compound lower casting as well as the top casting are unique to that model.? Lot 3 and later lathes used a totally different arrangement for securing the compound slide base casting to the cross slide. Also for you that are not aware of it Lot 2 lathes only swing 6 inches not 7 ? like Lot 3 4 and 5 lathes.? There are almost no parts that interchange from a Lot 2 to the later models.? They look similar but that’s about all that’s the same.? Lot 2 lathes are very unique.? Picture is of a Lot 2 compound.? There is a spud sticking up from the cross slide and the bottom casting of the compound slide rest over it and the cap screw you see is what locks the compound slide to the cross slide.? I’m wondering if you don’t have a lathe like Phil Boxel in the UK.? Its tagged Lot 2 but is definitely a Lot 4 lathe.? You can see it on Tony Griffiths Web site. Makes me wonder why both of these lathes are not in the US.? There were many Daltons shipped to the UK during WW I for war production. ? Sent from for Windows 10 ?
