Need help finding parts and literature
Greetings! I am looking for gears and any literature for my recent purchase. I came across an add on CL for a Dalton 6 Lot 4 for an amazing price, however it was fully disassembled by the previous owner, who intended to restore it. I intend to do the same, but before starting i reassembled it to make sure there are no missing parts. and other than a few bolts, it is in great condition. The bed, cross-slide and compound slide still have “fish scales” finish, the acme threads and nuts are near perfect, and there is very little rust. It comes with a taper cutting attachment, I am however missing the cross slide piece.?
Anyway, any recommendations for where i can find the parts and gears i am missing, as well as, any literature that i can download and read? I greatly appreciate it! Thanks, Sergey |

Welcome to the Group Sergey OK so you have a Dalton that's great:-)? The Lot 4 started production early to mid 1914 and ran till the end of production in 1929.? Change gears are going to be a little hard to come by as I have sold off almost all the extra ones I had. Change gears are 20 pitch 14 1/2 degree pressure angle and you can get them from Boston gear or Browning gear but they are expensive.? In the past both Boston and Browning sold change gears with three different bore sizes but today they both only sell one bore size and don't remember right now what that is so you may have to bush any gear you purchase.? Let us know what gears you do have and I will see if I have any left that you could use.? I do have a few Boston gears that are direct replacements. I also have some replica replacement bolts so again let me know what size and length you need and will see what I have left.? Bolts and other fasteners are standard size the only thing different is the shape and size of the hex head.? Dalton made there own? bolts and screws. As for the cross slide extension casting for attaching the taper attachment slider to the cross slide you will? have to make one as almost all the taper attachments we know of that part is missing.? I have three taper attachments and only one original connector casting.? Will post a picture of what it looks like. As for literature check out Lathes UK on the internet as Tony Griffith has some information and history on his site.? Oh and I wrote all the Dalton history for Tony about 20 years ago.? I also have a collection of literature on the Daltons but its just sales literature nothing in the way of any manuals have ever been found.? I also have the only stock of replacement parts but over the last 20 years most of the needed parts are gone.? Let me know any specific part and will see what I have.? I have a number of Lot 4 parts lathes. Understand that Dalton lathe parts usually don't interchange from one lathe to another as they were basically hand built so things like aprons and a few other parts just don't interchange from one lathe to another. As to finish on original Dalton lathes they were coated with Japanning and did not survive very well.? So if your lathe is in original finish it will be japanning not really paint.? Japanning was two parts pure gum turpentine two parts boiled linseed oil and one part powdered asphalt.? It was brushed on individual parts then the parts were baked three times with the last time at near 400 degrees.? So if you have ever seen a black Singer Sawing machine Singer was a master at Japanning. The finish did not hold up will with UV and oil soaked badly.? The color is a semi gloss black and most of us have used semi gloss black Rustolium paint on our Daltons.? I have restored two Daltons using powder coat that turns out to be as close to the original finish as I have ever found.? I used 65% gloss black powder. The picture is of a Lot 6 Dalton but all lot numbers used the same taper attachment and link casting.? Also all Daltons used the same size T slot in the compound for the tool post and also all Daltons from the Lot 4 to the Dalton 9 the distance from the top of the compound to the spindle center is the same so all Daltons used the same tool post. If you go to a modern tool post the OXA size quick change tool post is the best size.? As you get your lathe running we can talk more about what tool holders and insert tooling to use Dennis.

Here is the problem Robert with getting another shifter.? The detent holes in the end of your head stock were drilled on assembly to match the shifter they installed on the lathe. These are not interchangeable parts. I? have done it but here is what? you have to do.? First you have to find a shifter second you have to plug the three holes in the end of your head stock casting then you have to spot in three new holes so you can use a different shifter. Have done this three or four times now.? Dennis

What you have is only the second one to be found.? You have most of the parts to the lever collet closer.? The arm on the back of the lathe that is part of the door hinge is the support for the end of the collet closer arm.? Need to go fix dinner now but will wright more later.? Pictures are of Ralph Ferons lever closer when he let me use it at a show in Michigan in 2016.? Dennis

You have a couple of parts I dont recognize .? The casting with the screw with the knurled knob is a mystery to me and not sure its a Dalton part..? Here is a picture of a lathe I have that is still in the crate.? Its a Dalton 9 and again is the only one know of with the lever collet closer.? Were as your lever closer on? your smaller lathe will work with 3C collets the Dalton 9 could not only use the 3C but could also use the 4C that went up to 3/4 inch capacity were as the C3 only went to 17/32 or just over 1/2 inch.? In the pile of parts picture you can see the parts to the lever collet closer. its just like the one used on your lathe only just a bit bigger though they did use some of the same parts.? Mostly the tub was larger as it was 1 inch in diameter and was for the 4C collet.

The first and third picture shows me a problem with the spindle.? The gear that is attached to the cone pulley on the spindle is not seated into the pulley properly.? I also wonder if this is because the thrust bearing or washer is missing that goes between the gear and the left hand spindle bearing flange.? ?Also there should be a thrust washer (red fiber) under the thrust adjusting nut on the left side of the left spindle bearing.

As for the cross slide extension casting for attaching the taper attachment slider to the cross slide you will? have to make one as almost all the taper attachments we know of that part is missing.? I have three taper attachments and only one original connector casting.? Will post a picture of what it looks like. ? ? ? The picture is of a Lot 6 Dalton but all lot numbers used the same taper attachment and link casting.? Also all Daltons used the same size T slot in the compound for the tool post and also all Daltons from the Lot 4 to the Dalton 9 the distance from the top of the compound to the spindle center is the same so all Daltons used the same tool post. If you go to a modern tool post the OXA size quick change tool post is the best size.? As you get your lathe running we can talk more about what tool holders and insert tooling to use ? Dennis. ? 开云体育I think the casting with the screw is part of a tool post - it would fit on a stud in the top slide and the domed washer and nut hold it down. ?The clamping force is applied by nipping the little screw to apply pressure on the tool. ?The sort of thing you find on early UK lathes.HTH, Nick
