The gear retainers are called threadless nuts. These were Hubert Daltons first lathe patent. Every lathe built uses these to hold gears on. The ones you made are very close to originally. Check out

Yes, this thing had some use. I found the problem with the knee. The screw had a 0.070" bend right at the thrust bearing. The old manual press took it out. The knee lock was missing so I'm making one
