i agree.? I read everything that is labeled dalton59.? My husband has threatened to delete them but I want to be sure I've read them before he does!
?
I have to admit, I'm spending most of my time at the organ (no less than 2 hours daily) since I'm giving an organ recital on November 1.? Well, it started out as a recital but I've asked 2 other organists to help.? I was priviledged to study (one semester) with Jan Bender, a German Lutheran composer while in Columbia SC.? He died in 1994 and this is 100th birth year.? While in that fair city, not only did I study with him, the music prof at the seminary (where Dave was studying) asked me to take Herr Bender and his wife to the weekly organ recitals around town.? He showed his appreciation by giving me autographed copies of much of his music.? It's from this "mini" Bender library that will serve as the basis of the recital.? A lot of his music is based on hymns so the audience will sing the hymns first, then the organists will play.
?
After the recital, I plan to spend Thursday nights learning Japanese folk dances with a group of ladies that I've known for several years.? I lived with 2 different Japanese girls in college and have visited one of them who lives on the northern island of Hokkaido.? My world continues to grow as I trust each of your is growing.? That in no way takes presidence to the love of the history of Dalton/Kidron OH.? As Linda mentioned, since most of us have Swiss/German heritage, by virtue of the fact that we grew up in Wayne Co., that's where I got my interest in going back to my roots and the love for others who came to the States.

Looks like Orrville wins the prize for mass destruction of its schools.
I can't believe the number of schools closed or pending demolition on the list of Wayne County Schools.
Word has it that Orrville is planning a megaschool (maybe reverting to the one room school concept--only on a bigger scale).
In re: Dalton grade school closed in 1953/1954 I think the reason it said the location was on Lincoln Highway was that was before the duals were setup as US 30 as it bypassed Dalton. I remember the truck traffic on Lincoln Highway before the bypass as the traffic came roaring past our house on East Main Street next to Nussbaum's filling station where I could buy a Grapette for a nickel.
So I guess the relative location of the old grade school was Lincoln Highway (aka Main Street).
I guess the photo could also have shown the location as Dalton Cemetery since that was nearby.
Maybe they used the old school rubble for recycled tombstones for the cemetery.
You know...dust to dust, ashes to ashes.
Too bad they leveled the old grade school. It was probably built better than the schools that followed. Nothing like breahing in asbestos for eternity. Some say that asbestos wsrps your mind. Somehow it did not affect me.
Question. Why don't they list some of those old one room school houses that surrounded the Dalton metroplex? I vaguely remember there were some around there..just not sure where they were located or their names. Anyone have an idea where they were located or their names?
Have a day.

John,
I attended the Sonneberg one room school.? It is still standing across the road from the Salem Mennonite Church.? The old hand pump was still standing when I visited it in January '09.? The reason it can not be put on the historic record is because "someone" used it as an extra shed to house tractors, a boat or something larger than a shed could house.? In so doing, a large hole was made on the east side of the structure thus ruining the original.? I think it's doors were closed in the early to mid 50's-whenever Kidron and Dalton became a consolidated school system.? For many years it was used to store collected clothing and furniture for MCC until a semi truck could pick up a truck load to take to Akron, PA.
?
My mother attended a one room school house called "Boone School" but I'm not sure where it was located.? I think maybe over in the area where Harley Hofstetter now lives.? Wasn't there one in the Marshalville area too?

Thanks Addie. I think my mother either attended the Sonnenberg one room school or maybe taught there. i don't recall. That is the school I was trying to remember. I think the one room school close to Marshallville may also have been used as a Grange Hall. I think we passed by that building on our way back to the Cleveland Airport from Orrville on Route 93 or 94 or whatever route it is now. Maybe it is Route 545 , 585 or something like that between Burton City and Marshallville.

John,
i just thought of another one room school house - Silver Hill.? It's on the Kidron Road between Route 30 and the big town of Kidron.? It too was used for storage but more for clothing because in HS, Mom made me go with her to sort clothing.? If it was flimsy material or needed bottons sewn on, or any sort of repairs, it went on the Salvation Army pile.? If it was warmer clothing and in good condition, it went on the MCC pile.? Don't know why, because MCC also has clothing drives for Africa and South America where heat is an issue.? It could have been a modesty issue too, for all I know.
?
yes, my mother talked about your Mom teaching or maybe going to school with her.? My mother's name was Esther Bixler before she married Paul Amstutz.? And your mother's maiden name was?? Could she have attended one of the schools in the country - like Sonnenberg or Boone School?? It seems to me that some of the Dalton folks who lived south of Route 30 did attend the country schools, back in those days.
?
Gosh, we need a time capsule.? Well, actually, the Kidron Heritage Center would have all this information - no doubt.
?
Anyone else in class of '59 have parents who attended, or taught, in a one room school house out in the country?
?
Time for some shut eye.

All this talk of old schools jogged my memory.? Anyone remember or related to Adrian Amstutz?? He was married to Lela to whom I am related.? ?He taught in some of those old schools.? He resided in Southern California for many years and I would see him occassionally.? He also made visits back to Dalton/Kidron.?
This man could remember more details than is probably found at the historical socitey.? He could tell you who taught at these schools and when and who attended them and who had the best softball team and even what the score was.? He knew whom was related to whom.? What a storehouse of knowledge.? One of those amazing minds that retained minutia.
Unfortunately I believe most of went with him when he died.? We often said he should write or record all that info but I don't believe he ever did.
I have been reading all the posts, just have not been responding.?
Sharon's father passed away on Oct. 5 so we are in Arkansas getting ready for an estate sale this weekend and getting the house on the market.? Plan to get back to Texas next week in time to get out my clown costume and go visit John.

i just thought of another one room school house - Silver Hill.?

Gosh, we need a time capsule.? Well, actually, the Kidron Heritage Center would have all this information - no doubt.

Keith,
?
This is Addie.? The Adrian Amstutz name sounds familiar and his wife, Lela also rings a bell.? Was she not a musician, either a pianist or singer.? I think Vic Gerber mentioned her name.? Talk about memories and details, I'm shocked at what sort of things I remember - as mentioned above.? Just got back from the 45th Class Reunion at Goshen College.? Classmates were amazed at what I remembered - dumb details but usually ones that bring a laugh!? Now, if I could just remember where I placed that organ book that has been missing since the beginning of August!
?
Does anyone know what Kidron had a 2 room instead of a one room classroom?? I remember our 7th and 8th grade years being that the renovated 2 rooms into a classroom/gymnasium in the mid 50's.? Must have been a part of the consolidation under Don Baker and Glen Berg.? How many other 2 room schools were there in the Dalton School district?? Who volunteers to contact the Historical Society of Dalton or the Heritage Center in Kidron to answer these "burning" questions.? We could have our own Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy show (minus the big bucks)!

There was a one-room school building on what is now Withrich Road and on
land owned by Calvin Moser at the time.? From what I can see on Google
maps, it does not appear to be there now.? Anyhow, when we were in grade
school, we had gotten off the bus near there with our neighbor who was in high
school at the time.? Egged on by him, we broke all of the windows in the
building by throwing stones through them.? Of course, it was determined who
the culprits were.? Our neighbor had to go to the Mosers and apologize and
promise to work for them to make restitution.? We, being little kids, just
had to go and apologize?- a good lesson learned.

John,
i just thought of another one room school house - Silver Hill.?
It's on the Kidron Road between Route 30 and the big town of Kidron.?
It too was used for storage but more for clothing because in HS, Mom made me
go with her to sort clothing.? If it was flimsy material or needed

yes, my mother talked about your Mom teaching or maybe going to school

of Route 30 did attend the country schools, back in those days.

Thanks Addie. I think my mother either attended the Sonnenberg
one room school or maybe taught there. i don't recall. That is the school
I was trying to remember. I think the one room school close to Marshallville
may also have been used as a Grange Hall. I think we passed by that building
on our way back to the Cleveland Airport from Orrville on Route 93 or 94 or
whatever route it is now. Maybe it is Route 545 , 585 or something like that
between Burton City and Marshallville.

Egged on by him, we broke all of the windows in the building by throwing stones through them. Of course, it was determined who the culprits were. Our neighbor had to go to the Mosers and apologize and promise to work for them to make restitution. We, being little kids, just had to go and apologize - a good lesson learned.
