Didn’t Lanny Rossiter marry Marilyn Graber?

?

I was in a car with several people and we did the corn shuck thing and they were staked.? The farmer was hiding in the field with a gun and lined us all up along the wall of an old Amish school house.? Can you believe that was the last time I did that?

?

Didn’t someone hang a cat at the top of the flagpole at the High School?

?

Some of the guys used to think it was cute to open a farmer’s gate and let his cows out.

?

The girls must have participated in driver’s ed, although I didn’t, because I remember that Phyliss Bixler was such a bad driver that Coach McFarren made her drive on the football field and she hit the goal post!

?

Didn’t Mr. Jordan teach driver’s ed too?

One of our former choir directors used Kate Smith as the model for how the women, especially the altos, should sing.? He would say "Think Kate Smith".? I think he had a physical posture in mind as well as a vocal technique.

Wow!? You brought back the bushwacking memory, of course I would never do anything like that, including the toilet paper across the road, hee, hee.?

Lanny's corn shuck story was great! The farmers outfoxed them.

Anybody else have a story about off the wall things we did?

I recall one time a group of us (not sure who was part of this stunt)
thought it would be funny to stretch a roll of toilet paper across a
dark road at night and watch cars come to a screaching stop. I think
the place we chose was the road from Route 30 to Kidron (Kidron
Road?).
That was pretty stupid as we could have caused someone to wreck. It
seemed funny at the time. The toilet paper looked like a fence across
the road. Very ingenious and very stupid. But it worked. I don't
know who the poor soul was who came to a screaching stop but he is
probably still cursing us out.

Another dumb thing we did was to go bushwhacking with our lights out
and then turn them on when we found a car parked on the side of the
road we would turn our lights on. There's nothing like driving down
the road with your light off.

Bucking snowdrifts was fun too. One time Shookup (Don Johnson) was
doing that and he got too far off the road and hit a barbed wire
fence which got wrapped around the driveshaft of his car. What a
time we had trying to get his car back on the road again.

Just a few of the dumb things we did. There wer probably many more
which I have forgotten.

Ok you guys are killing me.? I'm starting to flow with the memories, now comes the things we used to do that was not exactly good.? I remember on halloween night time when we used to cruise the back country roads looking for corn shocks farmers put up.? We used to practice our tackling by running thru ?fields and knocking them down.? I remember one smart farmer who put stakes in the middle of the shocks, OUCH!?

?

Do you remember when the amish buggy was disassembled and reassembled on the roof of a downtown business?? I remember the sheriff coming to school asking questions about the incident.?

?

How about Lanny Rossiter?? I remember the name.? He dated a girl (?) in school and I remember everyone used to tease her about dating a jailbird because he spent time in jail.? I believe that girl eventually dated Emer (Els) Royer from East Greenville who was my cousin.? He served time in the Army as a helicopter mechanic and liked to hang out with the Dalton school kids.? Any memories of him or her??

?

I remember parties where we used to place our hands over our mouths and noses and blow out emitting no air causing ourselves to pass out.? That is why some of us are now brainless and lucky to be alive.??

Kate Smith died physically in 1986 but her rendition of "God Bless America" will always continue.? I remember when ever I was sick and had to stay home, I would watch TV, Arthur Godfrey, Tennessee Ernie Ford (sp) and many other shows and she appeared on them as well and the weekly variety shows, Ed Sullivan, Milton Burle, etc.? We usually had a conflict on Sunday evenings as I wanted to watch "The Comedy Hour" and others wanted Ed Sullivan.? That was then followed by "The Sid Cesar Show".?
Someone earlier mentioned The Ted Mack Amateur Hour.? My sister Bonnie appeared live on that show from New York on May 21, 1961 playing the Marimba.? She was 18 at the time.? Someone recently found an archive tape of the show and made a CD for her and I now have a copy.

I think they talked about car lengths, rather than seconds; that
is, one car length for every ten miles and hour. I think seconds are
easier to work with - just count one thousand one, one thousand
two, ... until you reach some point on the side of the road that the
car in front of you has just passed. Estimating car lengths is much
more subjective.

Anyhow, the event on Mill, or whatever that street is named, no,
it's North Church Street, I just looked it up on Google maps, was a
fun way to get out of class for a little while.

These were not local Cleveland tv shows, but who remembers some
of
these legendary great innovative tv shows:

Pinky Lee show (starring, who else, Pinky Lee)

Mr Peepers (starring Wally Cox)

Mr Wizard (Don Herbert)--a great science show for kids

The Cisco Kid with his sidekick Pancho

The Lone Ranger with his sidekick Tonto (Clayton Moore and Jay
Silverheels)

Some kind of space show with phony rocketships. I can't
remember
the
name. Was it Captain Video?

Flash Gordon (a weekly series with short episodes of 15
minutes?)

I do remember the Howdy Doody Show with Buffalo Bob, Clabelle
the
deaf mute clown (all clowns are creepy), Princess
Summerfallwinterspring, Phineas T Bluster, and others.

Steve Allen show (The Tonight Show before Johnny Carson was on
it)

Amos and Andy (with the Kingfish--that show was really funny)

The Stu Erwin Show

Mama (an awful show); maybe it was I Remember Mama? Anyways, I
choose to forget it.

Bishop Fulton Sheen-a real entertaining show.

Ted Mack Amateur Hour ( a precurser of The Gong Show which
appeared
in the 70's or 80's)--now that's my kind of show.

Dragnet (starring Jack Webb who married Julie London--she was
really
a great singer with a sexy voice)

Kate Smith (God Bless America)

I don't remember the show, but maybe somebody does; all I
remember
are the dancing Old Gold cigarettes. There was also some show
that
this goofy bellboy calls for Philip Morris. What was that show?

Just trying to recall some of the great? shows of the 50's...

I remember Charles Smith.? That is the first year I moved from the Kidron school to Dalton.? I seem to remember that most of the class didn't like Mr. Smith - thought he was too hard or always looking at them or something.? I actually thought he was okay.? Like the other responses, I don't remember much else - but then I don't recall a lot of what I have been reading about so I am glad that others can remember.

The missing years. The eighth grade is a missing year for me. I
think Charles Smith was our teacher. I can't recall anything at all
about the eighth grade. Does anyone remember anything about the
eighth grade (and Charles Smith, if indeed he was our teacher)?
Surely something eventful must have happened in Grade 8. Maybe I
skipped the eighth grade and went directly from Grade 7 to Grade 9?
Doubtful.

Re: Connie Bodager

To all:

I'm really sorry to hear the news about Connie. I owe a special
thanks to her for efforts to introduce me to my wife Rose. Connie
and Rose were friends and Connie told Rose "let me introduce you to
this weird guy Weasel; you would make a perfect match". Connie was
right. Here's a brief story of the encounter.

Cash and I went to a festival (maybe even the Dalton Street Carnival,
or maybe it was the Calamoutier Festival in Holmes County). Anyways,
Cash and I threw pingpong balls into a fishbowl with a live goldfish
in each bowl. It was probably some kid's game, but we played the
game and unlikely as it seems, I actually won the fishbowl--including
the live goldfish. Now what was I supposed to do with a live
goldfish anyways? Well, the obvious solution was to give it to some
kid. No takers. So Cash and I left the festival and decided to go
to El Rancho Grande in Wooster (close to the old movie drive-in
theater).

So what do you do with the goldfish? Big dilemma. Do I leave it in
the car, or do I take it inside El Rancho Grande? We decided to take
it inside. I think Dutch Martin, Lyle Royer, Jeff Slusser?, et al
were playing some tunes with the band they formed (can't think of the
name). Anyways, we also saw Connie inside with some of her friends.
One of the friends was Rose Gochnauer of Orrville who was celebrating
her 19th birthday. Big whoopee! So Connie saw Cash and me and
introduced me to Rose. So there I was with this stupid goldfish with
me. Not knowing what to do, I spooked and asked Rose if she wanted
this stupid goldfish. Cool move. Rose took the goldfish, named it
Larry and the fish lived happily everafter (until it croaked). And
the rest is history. Connie's efforts were rewarded with Rose and me
hitting it off real well that summer of 1963. We eventually got
married in Monroe, Michigan by Clarence F Miller, Justice of the Peace
(who was a plumber on the side--at least that's what the sign in
front of his house stated). The witnesses were friends of Clarence's
who were at his house playing cards. By the way, we were married on
Feb 14, 1964, and didn't even realize it was Valentines Day. The
good news is that it is easy to remember our anniversary. The bad
news is that it is so difficult to celebrate anniversaries because
everyone else goes out to eat on Valentine's Day.

It's a long story, but it's my tribute to Connie and how fun loving
she is. Rose and I will put her in our prayers and write to her to
tell her of the old times we had and to wish her well.

By the ways, does anyone know if they still have a festival in
Calamoutier (which Cash and I pronounced it as Calamooch)? Also is
El Rancho Grande still in operation? Ah, the good old foolish days.

Subject: [dalton59] Drivers Ed at Dalton High (before crash test dummies, we were the dummies)

Remember the good old days when Drivers Education was free and
sponsored by the high school? I think Robert Pack (the General) was
our drivers ed instructor. That was a fun course. He would have us
drive to Massillon, just to escape the Wayne County line. I think we
drove a 1959 Chevrolet Belair or Biscayne, highland green color. The
1959 Chevy had that goofy v-shaped trunk. I haven't seen any of them
in years. They never became popular like the 57 Chevy. Those big
old 1959 Chevy's cost about $2000 new back then. And that was a lot
of money. You could hardly afford to pay 25 to 30 cents per gallon
to put gas in them. And the gas mileage was atrocious (nobody cared).
That 59 Chevy was a good drivers ed car, though. A lot of metal
around all of us in case we crashed (which we never did).

Somehow we all passed the dreaded driving test to get our licenses.
Remember when parking spots actually required you to use your
parallel parking skills? That was a tough maneuver, especially with
the tanks we drove without power steering. That was when curb
feelers were popular and even useful. Have not seen curb feelers in
years. Nobody parallel parks very much anymore (at least not in
Texas).
