Hi all,
I'm writing this from my hospital room at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC). I came in on May 24 for a heart cath and they wheeled me into the operating room early the next morning for a double by-pass operation.
I was able to go home on Wednesday June 2. Then Saturday June 5 I had somewhat of a setback and got my first ambulance ride in over 69 years, back here to CMC. Turns out I picked up an infection that got into my bloodstream.
The infection is MSSA, not to be confused with MRSA, but also a stubborn virus. It looks like I may be going home again soon, but will continue the antibiotic, Cefazolin for at least 4 weeks. This antibiotic can only be given via an IV line.
This morning they put in a PIC (sp?) line and Suzanne will be able to refresh her paramedic skills when we get home.
Right now I feeling pretty good and I hope that trend continues!

To W3CGQ from XYL of WB8MBE.? Did the docs use staples or super glue for the incision?? One of Dave's buddies visited him in the Hear Hospital with "So you've joined the zipper club but you whimped out with only 4.? I had 7 by passes."? interestingly enough, 8 years later, he had a pace maker and defib put in this week.? hope the double by-pass surgery will be all that you need.? You are another example of patients picking up germs/bugs/virus/ etc while in the hospital.? I agree - so glad is was not the deadly MRSA.? As Dave was leaving the hopsital in April after the cranial biopsy, he tested positive for one of those MSA's but if he promised to do the mouth swab/mouth wash and something else, can't remember what, he was allowed to go home.
?
The biopsy came back as anaplastic astrocytoma meaning a malignant glioma, or brain tumor.? That's what caused his seizure back in October.? He's on seizure medication and for the tumor he has 5 more radiation treatments and several more chemo pills to take before getting a month off to heal.? So at the end of this month, he will go with me to Dalton OH and stay with my brother Ivan Amstutz on the home farm and sleep, again, in the historic?Pioneer Home.? Will help a friend do some geaneology (sp?) to find her Amstutz relatives who lived in Holmes Co, and Wayne Co. before moving t Dekalb Co. in IN.? Her side of the family is Irish and German and I think it must have been a Rheinhart that married an Amstutz.? Since there are 3 Amstuitz families living in the Kidron/Sonneberg area with none of them related to each other, I'm pretty certain her Amstutz relatives will not be related to mine.? You have no doubt
been back to the Paul Gerber farm where you and your parents lived when you went to H.S.?and toured the pgrahamdunn woodworking phenominon.? We visit almost every time we go back to Kidron.? More touristy things pop up each time we go back, or so it seems.

Heal!? Be a good patient and follow your private nurse's instructions and you will heal.

Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery.
As an aside, I too, played nurse after Rose had an infection after her first brain surgery. Same routine that your wife will follow probably.
Although I was skeptical of how my nursing skills would be, I came through with flying colors. Tell Suzanne she will do just fine.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and I will add you to our prayer list.

Correction.
Sirius satellite radio channel 5 is the correct channel. Channel 62 is old-time country classic music.

How did anyone know that? I had no clue. I heard that song yesterday on Sirius satellite radio channel 62 on Norm N. Nite's show live from the Cleveland Rock Hall of Fame.
He explained the nursery rhyme bit. I never even realized there was a nursery rhyme like that. I must have not been much into nursery rhymes in my pre-school days.
I think he mentioned that Burl Ives also sang that song.
The only nursery rhyme songs I have heard in the last decade or so are those sung by Trout Fishing in America. Their song "The Window" is a compilation of nursery rhymes which they parodize. Check them out on their website www.troutmusic.com.
We are going to see Trout Fishing in America today at the Kerrville Folk Festival. We have been to the festival for so many years that we may becoming "Kerrverts".
If you ever have a chance to see Trout Fishing in America, I recommend them highly.
Will keep you posted on the show.

Question.
How many years has it been since our high school graduation?
The obvious answer is 51 years.
How many years has it been since we had our 50th class reunion?
The obvious answer is one year.
Do you suppose there are any high schools who have a 51st class gathering?
What is so unique about 50 and not 51?
If 50 years is a celebration, then 51 years should be an even bigger event.
Just pondering the futility of getting another year older,

Re: Preparation for Memorial Day
Good news and bad news about the poppies.
The bad news is that I did not get to Walmart to see if buddy poppies are still available.
The good news is that thanks to my packrat nature, I found several buddy poppies in my house that Rose and I wore proudly today.
There are some blessings being a packrat.
God bless America and our armed forces.

I might have said this previously last year. If so, please excuse the repetition.
My recollection of Decoration Day was riding my balloon tire orange colored Schwinn bicycle (complete with an annoying horn buzzer located in the cross-bar between the seat and steering handlebars in an enclosed metal thing which was part of the crossbar).
I attached all kinds of crepe paper (red, white and blue of course) between the spokes as everyone else did. Also I vaguely remember attaching playing cards somehow to the spokes so it would make a flapping sound as I rode my bike in the parade. It was tough going as I made my way up the Dalton hill on the way to the cemetery for the remembrance of veterans who sacrificed their lives for our country.
I guess because we grew up in a time shortly after WW II (the big one), that people were more patriotic back then. How times have changed now. Veterans have a hard time these days being recognized for their service to our country. God bless every one of them.
Have a great Memorial Day and pause to remember why we have this celebration every year. Memorial Day is more than picnics and barbecues.
May everyone have a safe and joyful Memorial Day!

Re: Preparation for Memorial Day
Hopefully the local Walmart will have veterans selling buddy poppies this year. Nobody else bothers anymore.
I'll check it out tomorrow and let you know if I am successful in getting some buddy poppies.

After sharing with you and my husband about buddy poppy day, he went to the IGA in this small town, McCaysville, Ga to pick up a red onion and 2 limes for my guacamole (McCaysville is actually where GA and TN come together) and he brought home a poppy for me. Attached to it was a little blue flower which said "forget me not"
I am going to try to attach a picture of both of them with my little Memorial Decoration Day display.
Wishing more of you would share with the Yahoo group.
The class of 60 will have their reunion next week so be thinking of them. They are very aggressive in planning and I am hoping that sometime in the future we will be able to combine our reunion with classes that went before us and also those that came behind us. Loved the class of 60 and sometimes wish I would of failed so I could of been in that class too!
Have a safe holiday weekend and take time to reflect on the past and the sacrifices that have been made for our freedoms which are being challenged daily.
love to all pjlee

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly.
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields National Memorial Day Parade
By Col. John McCrae.?
You've probably seen the little red paper poppy flowers being handed out for donations by members of the?. The Veterans bring them out a week or so before Memorial Day. This little flower has helped raise millions of dollars which goes to Veteran' rehabilitation and service programs and also supports the?and widows of our nation's Veterans. The poppy goes back to the poem by??titled "In Flanders Field" which describes the blowing fields of poppies among the battleground of the fallen.
It started in 1922 when the Poppy was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. The VFW decided that??be assembled by disabled and needy veterans who would be paid for their work to provide them with some form of financial assistance and give them a feeling of belonging by doing the task .
When you see the Veterans with the Poppies, remember to them it¡¯s all about veterans
helping veterans and living up to VFW¡¯s motto of ¡°Honor the Dead by Helping the Living.¡± The Poppy reiterates that the VFW will not forget the sacrifices of all men and women who have served and still serve today.
On?, Fly your flag, give a donation for a Buddy Poppy, wear it proudly, at 3 p.m. local time everywhere pause for one minute to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for us and take time and thank a Veteran! It¡¯s so important to remember that Memorial Day is not just a reason for a party it is about the sacrifices of our Military. Never Forget!
?¡°A veteran is someone who, at one point in one's life, wrote a blank check made payable to ¡®The United States of America, for an amount of up to and including my life¡¯. That is honor, and there are way too many
people in this country who no longer understand it.¡±
-Author unknown.
?are everywhere. Call your local VFW and they can give you information in regard to the Buddy Poppy. ?anyone see this in their town? ?Not here that I have seen. ?So sad that we don't take the time to appreciate the many that have sacrificed lives and limbs and minds to die for our freedom. ?
How many of you had parents that served our country back in the day and how many of you have done the same??
?I just read a book by Lavyle Spencer called "Morning Glory" that took place during the II WW and it made me realize that my parents never talked about the ?fears or sorrows or sacrifices they made. Now that I have realized this they are not here to ask. ? This book was one of the few ?I have read that I knew from the first chapter I did not want it to end. ?
??I am proud of my dad and my uncle who fought and survived WW II. ?How far away and forgotten our?troupes?are today. ?Let us all try to be more mindful of them. ?I think I will dig out my dads army hat and wear it for the day.
