DM/ Eleint?30:?Day?8 Location:?the road to Ordulin Time:?Dawn
After a night of education, music, food, and conversation, the group sleeps deeply without nightmares and wakes shortly before dawn, quickly packs and says their goodbyes, and departs with plenty of bread and cold duck in their packs.
Moods are high spirited after the wonderful night of rest. You're nearly a league into your travel before the first rays of sunlight crest the pines. Ashley wipes the moss from a weather worn milestone and sees Ordulin is 4 leagues on. At this pace, the Bard reckons they can reach the city by midday, even with frequent rests for the Gnome¡¯s short legs. Mooncrawler frequently moves ahead a hundred paces to scout for bandits or other potential threats, often encouraging Tabby to assist.
Most of the morning passes without incident. Frequent breaks for resting legs and eating snacks makes the journey somewhat pleasant. The day starts clear and warms nicely. Then, roughly a half league from your destination, Tabby smells smoke- not cooking fire smoke. Battlefield smoke. The acrid burning of lightning and magic. And a strange foul scent she doesn¡¯t recognize. But when she sees the look on Mooncrawler¡¯s face, the young Tabaxi feels her stomach churn.
The party progresses much more slowly and cautiously now. High noon comes and goes as your travel becomes defensive, protected, and vigilant. The stench of burning grows stronger and now and then a fine layer of fallen ash can be seen on sporadic leaves.
Finally, around mid-afternoon, the road bends to reveal the outskirts of Ordulin. The city is under siege! Outlying farms are either ablaze or smoldering ruins. Explosions pop within the city, and many shouts can be heard even at this distance.
The foul aroma that Tabby couldn¡¯t identify is quite prevalent now. Mooncrawler says a single word,¡°Brimstone¡±.
The Bard looks at each of you, sheer terror in his gaze. ¡°It¡¯s true, then. It can¡¯t be, but it must.¡±
He goes on to explain the recent history of Ordulin. On Nightal 1?, a??priestess named Elyril Hraven summoned a planar rift into the?, and a nexus from that plane, called the Adumbral Calyx, poured out of the rift, completely annihilating the city.??then emerged from the nexus and proceeded to animate the dead, incorporating the resulting monsters into his army. All that was left of the city was a dangerous whirlpool of uncontrollable?. The goddess??had ordered this be done so she could destroy??but the god??had delayed her by trapping her within the 'Ordulin Maelstrom'. She raged against the prison that was the Maelstrom, slowly opening a hole into the void that would eventually destroy the planet, but?, channeling the power of??and?; and?, wielding the divinity of Mask, closed the hole at the centre of the Maelstrom. Then, the floating Netherese city of??was deliberately crashed into Ordulin by??in order to destroy the Maelstrom itself.
¡°It is believed by some that Shar was destroyed, but most think she is still only imprisoned somewhere within the void,¡± he explains. ¡°The tales warn of Kesson Rel returning to Ordulin one day to release her, but he¡¯s supposed to be trapped in the Plane of Shadows and only Shar can free him. A catch-22 scenario if you will, keeping them both trapped forever.¡±
He wipes his face. ¡°But it seems someone has decided to try to free Shar. And not only did they bring an army, the cursed fool managed to summon a demon!¡±
And what do you do?

The half-elf does not have to ask Tabby twice to tag along with her on her
scouting as the Tabaxi is happy to join her.
?
She is pretty good at being silent with her steps, but it takes her a few tries to remain silent with her mouth. She¡¯s in a good mood, and when the young monk was in a good mood, she tended to be a little on the chatty side. This all
felt like the times she, her father, and his ranger friend would wander the grounds outside of Shadowdale, just to enjoy a little bit of nature.
?
Later on, the horrible scent hit the cat¡¯s sensitive nose. ¡°Oh gauds.¡±, she groaned as her eyes fell upon the half-orc. Was it him? As they moved on, it clearly was not Sweet William¡¯s case of ¡®borborygmus¡¯ that made the smells, it was (slightly) far worse.? It was the scents of WAR (not to be found on any scented candles they would sell at the local general store in her home village.
These battles were always lots of fun to read about or when she popped over to the Old Skull and hear about the more recent ones from the bards. Lots of action, heroics, and the utter defeat of nasty folk, but nobody talks about the battle clean-up. The poor folk who had to remove all the dead bodies and clean up the former battle-fields. And sometimes they don't even bother.
?
The little feline manages to push away and desires to cover up her nose with her top again as the word was spoken. "Brimstone". Yuck. And a village was actually under siege! War was happening right now! There was also a story to hear from this. It was not a good one! Lots of people were killed and turned into horrible undead.? There sure were a lot of names to remember in this story.? She wished she was older and far more experienced, along with having a full-sized adventuring group. They would have been of great aid, but for now.
?
She kept quiet for the moment and listened to what the others had to
say.

"We're actually going here? With the demons and monsters?", Tabby asked. They must have skipped a very large step in her adventuring career. She still needed to go through the giant rat and evil goblin stage of her career. She knew she could not hurt a demon with her old noodle arms. Even if she had the gnome's magic fire punching ring or bracelet, demons basically bathe in that sort of stuff. Hopefully, they were just passing by.

During the travel...?
"Oiiii! Me legs!" The chaffed gnome protests.?
"I knew I should have bought one of those cows from the villagers. All this walking is lighting a fire between my knees if you know what I mean!" He pulls his robes up to get some fresh air in there.
He consinders riding one of the party members the rest of the way, but decides not.
Approaching the scene...
What a grim site to see! Fire and explosions... "Hundreds must be dead already."
Addressing the bard "I'm unfamiliar with this city, what kind of army or defenses do they have?"
Pondering over the story that was told, he holds his chin "if they're killing and turning the dead to their side then we must start by saving as many people as possible. They need to get out of the city, it is in ruin."
He thinks maybe that the villagers could help? But he doesn't mention it yet.
"It is likely, that if there is a city buried beneath this one, then the top level attack is a diversion of sorts to ease the passage of greater evils to reach the ruins beneath and find what they're looking for."?
He continues "we will need to find someone familiar with the city, if we don't already have one." He looks at the bard and ranger.
"Fighting the undead" he shakes his head before turning to Ashley and grabbing his garbs "we need your protection! There will be undead and wraiths and ZoMBiEssS!!" He contorts his face.
"Bless us before we go in! And we MUST go in!" He shoots a look at Tabby.
Before moving forward, North will take strides over to a more wooded area with a few trees. He will use his ability to communicate with small forest animals to give a bird a simple message.
"Help Ordulin. God's and Demons attacked." Sending the bird to the small village that they had just visited.

If she wasn't so terrified at the moment, she would have found the half-orc's attempt at being sneaky rather amusing. Crouching low into the brush, nearly crawling in certain places, and occasionally scouting across an open area, the group stealthily maneuvers toward the nearest farm on the outskirts of the city.
A groan and bit of movement catches Sweet William¡¯s eye. It¡¯s a body, crawling arm over arm, dragging its legs. ¡°... help meeee...¡± it groans weakly.
Ashley throws caution to the wind and races to the wounded fellow¡¯s aid. It¡¯s a human male of about 30 years. His beard is singed and the left side of his face is burned.
The Priest rests a hand on the man and whispers a prayer, his left hand glowing faintly of pure white light. Moods are high spirited after the wonderful night of rest. You're nearly a league into your travel before the first rays of sunlight crest the pines. At this pace, the Bard reckons they can reach the city by midday, even with frequent rests for the Gnome¡¯s short legs. Most of the morning passes without incident. Frequent breaks for resting legs and eating snacks makes the journey somewhat pleasant. The day starts clear and warms nicely.
