July 22, 1867 A press excursion leaves New York for Chicago to publicize the new Silver Palace sleeping cars. Six Silver Palace sleepers, including the "Chicago", start the trip and two more will be added at Harrisburg. (This is probably when daily operation of the Chicago-New York Palace cars begins.)

July 22, 1877 Striking railroad workers in Pittsburgh set fire to stalled trains. When the crowd arms itself by breaking into gun shops, the Philadelphia militia fires on the crowd with Gatling guns in an attempt to clear the streets. Four soldiers are killed and 12 wounded. Twenty civilians are reported killed, however there is widespread belief that some civilian casualties were buried without notifying the coroner. The strike spreads to Ft. Wayne IN, Columbus OH, Buffalo NY, and St. Louis MO.

July 22, 1906 The State Street Line, Chicago's last cable car route, ends operations.

July 22, 1917 The Pennsylvania Railroad announces it has suspended its rule against hiring those over 45. Persons between the ages of 45 and 70 may be hired for the duration of the war and up to six months after.

July 22, 1920 William K. Vanderbilt dies. His son, Harold S. Vanderbilt inherits half of his father's fortune and takes the family seat on the New York Central Board.

July 22, 1939 The St, Joseph Railway, Light & Power Company (MO interurban) makes its final run.

July 22, 1942 The United States begins compulsory civilian gasoline rationing due to World War II. The rationing will cause rail ridership, which has been in a steady decline since 1916, to markedly increase. This increase and the sorry state of the passenger fleet after the heavy use of WWII will cause many railroads to invest heavily in new passenger equipment after the war.

July 22, 2013 In Tokyo a woman falls in the 8-inch gap between the platform and the train. Forty passengers along with train officials push the on the side of the car to push it away from the platform, freeing the woman. The train continues, having been delayed just 8 minutes. (Some sources say July 23)

July 22, 2016 Using a remote operated vehicle, searchers find the sunken remains of Canadian Pacific locomotive 694, a ten-wheeler that derailed and fell into Lake Superior on July 9, 1910.

July 22, 1956 Philadelphia trolley route 12 (Grays Ferry Avenue) was converted to bus operation and rerouted via 22nd, 23rd, and Market Streets to Independence Hall. It was also transferred from Woodland to Southern Depot. Bus route U (84th Street) was extended via Woodland Avenue from Island Road to the shopping center at 62nd Street.
