November 12, 1831 The first public trials of the "John Bull" locomotive are held on the Camden & Amboy Railroad at Bordentown, N.J. for visiting dignitaries. The "John Bull" pulls two passenger coaches. Their design is based on a stagecoach body with three compartments. Top speed on the trip: 35-40 MPH.

November 12, 1851 The Board of the Pennsylvania Railroad approves a contract with Adams Express Company. In time, Adams will become almost synonymous with the PRR.

November 12, 1866 Union Passenger Depot opens at Cleveland. (Note: do not confuse this station with the later Cleveland Union Terminal.)

November 12, 1873 Michigan Governor Bagley and Railroad Commissioners begin an inspection tour of the Grand Rapids & Indiana to Petoskey.

November 12, 1880 The narrow-gauge Toledo, Delphos & Burlington Railroad runs its first passenger train between Toledo and Marion IN.

November 12, 1891 The Valley City Street & Cable Railway ends service in Grand Rapids MI after three years of operation. At its height, the cable cars ran from Taylor and Sweet Streets at the north and Lafayette and Hall Streets to the south.

November 12, 1897 inventor Frank Julian Sprague first demonstrates Multiple-Unit or "MU" control on the Chicago Elevated.

November 12, 1901 The Pacific Electric Company is incorporated in California.

November 12, 1902 The Pullman Company orders that Pennsylvania Railroad cars in the "Yellow Kid" paint scheme (running on the Pennsylvania Limited and the Congressional Limited) will be painted Tuscan Red the next time they are shopped.

November 12, 1907 Formal dedication and opening ceremonies are held for the electrification of Grand Trunk's St. Clair Tunnel. The first tests were made the previous February, and full electric operation will begin in May.

November 12, 1910 A Michigan Central express train hits a Kalamazoo City streetcar, killing 9. The flagman at the crossing had his view blocked by a standing cut of boxcars. This and other accidents will lead to the crossing being replaced with a viaduct in 1937.

November 12, 1913 Concerned about the role sleep deprivation has played in recent accidents, the Pennsylvania Railroad announces it is considering requiring all employees to live within one hour of their workplace.

November 8, 1838 The "Rogers" (RLW c/n #4), the first locomotive in Illinois, makes an excursion run on the Northern Cross Railroad (later Wabash) from Meredosia 8 miles to the end of track and back. The locomotive was delivered to Meredosia by river packet.

November 8, 1842 The Board of the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad orders a ban on carrying any African Americans from Maryland into either Delaware or Pennsylvania without proof of free status, except when traveling with a master.

Even with passengers all on one side of the vehicle, two onboard gyroscopes are strong enough to keep the car level. Despite a series of successful demonstrations (including one in Brooklyn) the fear that the gyroscopes might fail will prevent Brennan's invention from ever being used for transportation.

November 7, 1835 John Elgar of York PA secures a patent for his plan to build section boats in compartments that are 7 feet by 20 feet, which can be combined end-to-end and side-by-side to form a canal boat and then disassembled to allow transshipment on railroad cars.

November 7, 1885 The Canadian Pacific Railway, Canada's first transcontinental railroad, is completed with a last spike ceremony at Craigellachie BC.

?

November 7, 1894 The Mahoning State Line Railroad (OH, later P&LE) is incorporated.

?

November 7, 1902 The Pennsylvania Railroad installs electric arc lighting at Conway Yard.

November 7, 1907 Jesus Garcia Corona, a Mexican railroad brakeman, saves the entire town of Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico by driving a train with a burning boxcar of dynamite six kilometers out of town before it explodes. He does not survive. The name of the town is changed to Nacozari de Garcia. Many streets and a sports stadium are named after him, and in Mexico November 7 is celebrated as “Dia del Ferrocarrilero” (Railroader’s Day).

November 7, 1912 Over the strenuous objections of the Detroit & Mackinac Railroad, the Michigan Railroad Commission gives the Boyne City, Gaylord & Alpena railroad permission to build a line crossing Alpena, Montmorency, Otsego and Charlevoix counties.

November 7, 1916 A Boston streetcar crashes through a dimly lit barrier and plunges through an open drawbridge into the deep Fort Point Channel. Forty-four men and one woman are killed. The accident receives almost no coverage in the papers because of the surprise victory of Woodrow Wilson over Charles Evans Hughes in a last-minute vote recount.

November 7, 1925 The ICC approves the takeover of the Ann Arbor Railroad by the Wabash.

?

November 7, 1944 In Aguadilla PR a passenger train derails due to excessive speed descending a grade. Sixteen are killed and 50 injured.

November 7, 1947 The first "Friendship Train" leaves Los Angeles for New York. Following an idea by newspaper columnist Drew Pearson, the trains will collect food and other relief goods for France and Italy. In addition to war damage, severe drought is causing food shortages in those areas.

November 7, 1987 The Kalamazoo, Lake Shore & Chicago officially begins operations between Paw Paw and Hartford MI. The company has adapted the name of the line's owners from 1906-1926. Pioneer Railcorp will operate the line through 2015. It is now (2023) operated by the Hamilton/Hartford group. Much of the line east of Hartford has had rails removed.

November 7, 1987 Singapore opens its first rail rapid transit system, the MRT, or “Mass Rapid Transit”.

November 6, 1906 In the early morning hours, a Baltimore & Ohio freight train and a B&O passenger train collide head-on in Porter County IN. Between 55 and 61 people are killed.

November 6, 1926 Dayton, Covington & Piqua Traction Company (OH) is abandoned, despite the fact it was one of the few interurbans to outlast a parallel steam road (Cincinnati Hamilton & Dayton). (Some sources say November 5, some say November 26).

November 6, 1932 The streetcars and buses owned by the Kalamazoo Transportation Company are seized for non-payment of $4,487 ($104,625 in 2023) in unpaid taxes. KTC service ended 5 days ago.

November 6, 1936 The Pennsylvania Railroad authorizes General Electric to proceed with its proposal to design one 5,000 HP steam turboelectric locomotive. The project is put on the back burner as GE concentrates on a "Steamotive" for the Union Pacific and never makes it back to the front burner.

November 5, 1888 The first passenger train arrives in Middlebury IN, coming from Goshen on the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway. When the station is built next month, it will be too close to the tracks. The building will be moved soon after.

November 5, 1905 The westbound "Michigan Central Limited" is renamed the "Wolverine". It will become the premier Chicago-New York Train on the Michigan Central route.

The route 2 conversion ended the use of plain 8000-series Peter Witt cars with wooden seats. Route XF was a rush hour bus route from 30th Street Station to the Civic Center via 34th Street and Curie Avenue but the reroutings of trolley routes 11, 13, 34, and 37 via Spruce and Locust Streets sealed the bus route's fate. Route 83 was a Ferries shuttle bus route from Franklin Square Station of the Locust Street-Camden Line via Delaware Avenue. This bus route was still in operation on March 31, 1952, when the Market Street Ferry closed and the Franklin Square station was made full time. November 1, 1848 A cog rail is installed on the Madison (IN) incline and the use of horses is abandoned. The first rack locomotive, "M.G. Bright" (0-8-0) has one set of cylinders driving the regular wheels and a second set mounted vertically driving the cogwheel.

November 1, 1855 More than 600 passengers board a special train in St. Louis for a ceremony commemorating the opening of the Pacific Railroad in Jefferson City. When the train crosses the Gasconade River at Gasconade MO (about halfway between the two cities), the bridge collapses after being weakened by high water. Twelve of the 13 cars fall into the river. Sixty persons die and hundreds are injured.

The train had cleared an automatic block signal, and was struck by an express commuter train. After this accident all Chicago commuter trains are painted with bright stripes at the ends of the trains.
