May 20, 1970 Two passengers were killed and 77 were hurt when two GG trains collided in the IND Roosevelt Avenue wreck. R-16 car 6304 was cut up and R-40M car 4501 was heavily damaged but was eventually repaired at Coney Island Shops. The collision was caused by human failure, mainly for permitting the motorman of car 4501, who had a poor record, to operate trains. Later, they ran on the local track to Jamaica and express to Manhattan on the Queens-bound express track. EE trains from Whitehall Street ran to Astoria and GG trains from Smith-9th Street first terminated at Court Square, then at Northern Boulevard. Then all Manhattan and Brooklyn-bound E, F, and GG trains ran to Queens Plaza on the Manhattan-bound express track. KK (6th Avenue-Broadway Brooklyn) trains operated beyond the rush hours and all 7 (Flushing) train service was local, since 74th Street is a local stop.
