December 27, 1853 A force of 300 New York railroad workers from Buffalo arrives at Harbor Creek (near Erie PA) and intimidates citizens of Harbor Creek tearing up the Erie & North East Railroad. When a Buffalo & State Line (later NYC) conductor wounds a townsman, citizens drive the railroad workers back into the train. The mayor, militia, and a large mob of citizens of Erie arrive and take possession of track.

December 26, 1870 The 12.8 kilometer (7.95 miles) Frejus (or Mt. Cenis) Rail Tunnel is holed through, connecting France and Italy. The project was expected to take 25 years, but pneumatic drilling has reduced the time to 14 years.

December 25, 1955 Philadelphia Transportation Company played Santa Claus to riders of trolley routes 5 and 33 by giving them their new presents--new GMC TDH-5106 diesel buses. The route 5 conversion closed Frankford Depot as a rail division with route 3 moving to the Ridge Depot. The 40 ex-KCPS PCC cars then went to Luzerne Depot and transferred to route 50. The remodeled 8000s from route 50 went to the excess pile; the plain 8000s from route 3 were retired to Southern Depot; those from route 33 at Allegheny Depot went to route 9 which returned to Allegheny for its final rail days; and those from route 9 at Ridge went to route 3. December 15, 1893 High winds topple a construction crane on the Big Four Bridge, under construction at Louisville KY. The crane, one of the through truss spans and 41 workers are thrown into the Ohio River. Twenty-one of the workers lose their lives.

December 15, 1907 The New York Central & Hudson River Railroad extends the running time of the Twentieth Century Limited by an hour and a half to allow for delays due to snowstorms.

December 15, 1925 Long Island RR 401 is demonstrated for the first time. It pulls a seven car freight from ALCO in Schenectady NY to Long Island, making it the first mainline freight in the U.S. pulled by diesel-electric power.
