November 4, 1874 The narrow gauge East Broad Top Railroad & Coal Company opens for revenue service to Robertsdale PA, a new town established by the Rockhill Iron & Coal Company. An excursion tour was held on October 16. ? November 4, 1925 Canadian National Railcar 15820 finishes a transcontinental trip it started three days earlier, averaging 44 mph and topping out at 60 mph ? November 4, 1936 After meeting with representatives of Baldwin Locomotive Works, officials of the Pennsylvania Railroad approve both passenger and freight versions of a 4-4-4-4 duplex locomotive. ? November 4, 1947 The citizens of San Francisco vote 3 to 1 to save the Powell Street cable car line. ? November 4, 1953 The Baltimore & Ohio announces it is all diesel between Jersey City NJ and Cumberland MD. ? November 4, 1963 Trolley service ends in Baltimore. ? November 4, 2021 CN announces it will be purchasing a Wabtec battery-electric locomotive. November 1, 1953 Philadelphia shuttle bus routes XF and 83 were put out of misery. Route XF was a rush hour bus route from 30th Street Station to the Civic Center via 34th Street and Curie Avenue but the reroutings of trolley routes 11, 13, 34, and 37 via Spruce and Locust Streets sealed the bus route's fate. Route 83 was a Ferries shuttle bus route from Franklin Square Station of the Locust Street-Camden Line via Delaware Avenue. This bus route was still in operation on March 31, 1952, when the Market Street Ferry closed and the Franklin Square station was made full time. November 1, 1842 The Schenectady & Troy Railroad (later NYC) opens. ? November 1, 1848 A cog rail is installed on the Madison (IN) incline and the use of horses is abandoned. The first rack locomotive, "M.G. Bright" (0-8-0) has one set of cylinders driving the regular wheels and a second set mounted vertically driving the cogwheel. ? November 1, 1855 More than 600 passengers board a special train in St. Louis for a ceremony commemorating the opening of the Pacific Railroad in Jefferson City. When the train crosses the Gasconade River at Gasconade MO (about halfway between the two cities), the bridge collapses after being weakened by high water. Twelve of the 13 cars fall into the river. Sixty persons die and hundreds are injured. ? November 1, 1857 Because of a financial panic, the Michigan Central and Michigan Southern railroads agree to divide their passenger business between Lake Erie and Chicago 50/50 and their freight business 58/42 in favor of the Michigan Central. Both roads agree to give up their steamboats on Lake Erie used for a connection to Buffalo. ? November 1, 1860 The Flint & Holly Railroad (later F&PM, PM, C&O, CSX) begins operations between its namesake Michigan towns. ? November 1, 1869 The New York Central Railroad (1853) and the Hudson River Railroad are consolidated to form the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad Company (NYC&HR) under the control of Cornelius Vanderbilt. The merger plan was kept secret from regular stockholders until the vote was taken. ? November 1, 1872 The New York Central & Hudson River, New York & Harlem and New Haven railroads sign an agreement for the joint use of the first Grand Central Station. ? November 1, 1873 The Canada Southern Railway opens for through traffic. ? November 1, 1928 The Grand Trunk Western consolidates 10 subsidiary lines operating in Michigan, Illinois and Indiana to form a single system. ? November 1, 1928 The electrification of Pennsylvania Railroad's main lines between New York/Wilmington and Philadelphia/Columbia is announced. November 1, 1932 A bitter and contentious strike ends streetcar service in Kalamazoo MI at 4:00 pm. ? November 1, 1936 This month¡¯s issue of ¡°Railroad Stories¡± magazine reports that the Chicago South Shore & South Bend has donated a car to the Michiana Model Engineers Guild. The car has been placed at the corner of Sycamore St. and LaSalle Avenue in South Bend for use as a clubhouse. ? November 1, 1937 An agreement between the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Association of American Railroads takes effect today mandating spring cushion seats with armrests for head-end brakemen. The seats may be in the cab or on the tender deck, the location being optional with the railroad. The rule applies to all new locomotives, and within five years the seats must be in all locomotives. ? November 1, 1952 The Pacific Great Eastern Railway extends its main line from Quesnel BC to a connection with the Canadian National in Prince George. ? November 1, 1952 The Pennsylvania Railroad terminates its design contract with Raymond Loewy. ? November 1, 1956 The first transcontinental Trailer-On-Flat-Car rates go into effect. ? November 1, 1957 U.S. Class I Railroads report they roster 27,108 diesel and 2,697 steam locomotives. An additional 721 steam locomotives are in storage. ? October 31, 1955 Philadelphia's Market Street Subway was extended west from the 23rd Street portal to a new portal west of 44th Street to connect with the El between 45th and 46th Streets with the first El station stop at 46th. Because of an activity change in West Philadelphia, new subway stations at 30th and 34th Streets, the only ones with island platforms, replaced the 32nd and 36th Streets El stations. October 31, 1843 The Vermont Central is re-created to build a line across the center of Vermont. ? October 31, 1854 The first train arrives in Fort Wayne, IN from the east on the Ohio & Indiana Railroad (later PRR), completing the line from Crestline, OH. ? October 31, 1859 The Louisville & Nashville Railroad opens between Louisville and Nashville, completing a through line of uniform gauge between the Ohio River at Louisville and the Atlantic at Charleston, SC. It is the only rail line between the Southern seaboard and the Ohio River prior to the Civil War. ? October 31, 1864 A train carrying just over 500 passengers, most of them Union troops, runs head-on into a stock train near Indianapolis on the Lafayette & Indianapolis (later CCC&StL, NYC). Eighteen troops are killed (some sources say 22). ? October 31, 1880 The Grant Locomotive Works deliver a new locomotive to the Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne & Chicago (later PRR). The locomotive, designed by Eugene Fontaine, has regular drivers atop four smaller wheels that transmit traction to the rails. The locomotive is supposedly capable of 90 mph. ? October 31, 1903 The New York Central & Hudson River Railroad votes to electrify between Croton-on-Hudson on the Hudson Division and North White Plains on the Harlem Division. The system used will be a 660-volt DC on an under-running third rail. Later this fall they will sign a contract with General Electric for the locomotives. ? October 31, 1903 On the Big Four in Indianapolis, a switcher moving coal cars is on the main line during time reserved for a passenger train. The two trains collide, killing16 Purdue University students. ? October 30, 1954 New York's IND subway was extended via the Culver elevated line from Church Avenue to Coney Island after a new ramp connection was completed on McDonald Avenue at Avenue C. October 30, 1972 In the worst railway accident in Chicago history, two commuter trains collide in early morning dense fog, killing 45 and injuring 332. The engineer of an Illinois Central Gulf train overshot the 27th Street Station. As he backed to the station, the rear of the train was not properly flagged. The train had cleared an automatic block signal, and was struck by an express commuter train. After this accident all Chicago commuter trains are painted with bright stripes at the ends of the trains. ? October 30, 1983 New Jersey Transit officially retires its remaining GG-1's, after a day of fantrips yesterday. No GG-1 has run under its own power since. ? October 30, 1983 Amtrak begins Auto-Train service using much of the same route and equipment as the now-defunct Auto-Train Corporation. ? October 30, 1990 The Lenawee County Railroad ceases operation on the former Lake Shore & Michigan Southern branch between Morenci and Grosvenor MI. ? October 30, 2004 Amtrak drops smoking cars on all trains except the Auto-Train. At the end, only the Crescent, Silver Star and Silver Meteor carry smoking cars. ? October 30, 2008 Regional railroads Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern (mostly ex-C&NW) and Iowa, Chicago & Eastern (mostly ex-MILW) are placed under the control of Canadian Pacific. ? October 30, 2013 Police in San Diego shut down a tunnel to Tijuana used by drug smugglers. The tunnel used an electric railway to transport its illegal cargo. ? October 30, 2014 A contractor using a large drill to expand a well in Long Island City drills too far into the ground and scrapes the side and roof of an occupied ¡°F¡± train. October 29, 1957 San Diego's last PCC car, air-electric 528, was purchased from the San Diego Mill Supply Company to the local Parks Department and placed on static display at Delmar Park next to a retired Southern Pacific steam locomotive. October 25, 1949 The new stainless steel R-11 subway cars, of which only 10 were purchased, went into service on the BMT Broadway-Brighton express and the Times Square 11:05 PM express received a wolf whistle. These cars were numbered 8010-19 and had a super braking system. They were transferred to the IND a month later but returned to the BMT in 1954. These cars were retired to dead storage at Coney Island in 1957 but car 8010 was rebuilt in 1958 to work with the R-16 cars. The other 9 cars were rebuilt in 1965 and were reclassified as R-34 cars. All trolleys were relocated to,the 69th Street shops of the Market-Frankford line in Upper Darby, which were owned by the City division.
