DQ-1 Subwoofer Placement

I’ve had a pair of DQ-1 subwoofers and the LP-1 crossover for several years. I struggled with placement in my room and tried several locations, cross over points & output levels.?

Recently I pulled both out and photographed for sale. Not wanting to move both after the photo session, they stayed on either side of my listening position chair. I also happened to watch a YouTube video by Paul McGowan at PS Audio about subwoofer placement. Paul touched on “near-field subwoofer placement” where a subwoofer(s) sits directly next to the listener.?

I had a few minutes to try it and I finally like the performance. With my DQ-10s I have the crossover point at 50 Hz and the level very low on the LP-1. As expected the bass performance is changed for the better.?

What I didn’t expect was the positive change in the overall presence, weight across both the bass & midrange frequencies, and change in sound stage. ?I had my DQ-10s placed and dialed in to my taste. I was so happy that I listed the DQ-1s for sale….now I have trouble listening without the subwoofers engaged. Funny how this worked out. ?

If you’ve got a sub, give near-field placement a try.?

I have my dq10’s sitting on top of subs and lp1 set at 70hz,level at 1 o’clock,eq at 1 o’clock, and been happy. I’ll have to watch the video and see if I like it better ? Not sure I can live with placement on sides of my listening point?see images

Richard,

I tried the exact placement you’ve landed on with the DQ-10s sitting atop of the DQ-1Ws.?What the near-field placement changed for my system is the depth of soundstage in the bass & midrange.

I understand that much depends upon the room and mine is much smaller than yours. ?Hence, results may vary.?

I can understand bass change but mid range? Why , the sub doesn’t carry anything above 50-80hz.?

I guess I have lp1 set high enough that the floors and walls can shake with enough volume where they are. Just for kicks , I’ll move the left one to left of my chair? To move right one will mean moving the table . I’m curious now. Are yours still on floor? Vert or horz?

A sub(s) can change the entire tonal balance of a speaker and usually for the better if integrated correctly. For some rooms this can be a little challenging. Two subs will almost always integrate better than one.

Hi Andy -
Thanks for the description and your findings. The term 'near-field' is new to me wrt sub placement...but I can say with certainty that having a sub close to your listening position is an amazing experience.? I know this because my Dad had a Triphonic tr1200 downward firing sub (coffee-table style) directly behind his listening chair in the house I grew up in - with the DQ-10's out front.? I remember listening to this setup and recall how easily the low frequencies were heard and felt...without the need for being overly loud.

I'm happy that you have brought up this topic...as I'm going to try the same in my listening room!

Have a nice evening.
Persi
