Anyone Else Use DQ-10's For Home Theater Fronts and Center? I have a new issue...
Hi all.? I have two sets of DQ-10's.? For years I used them for stereo only with the MX-1 passive crossover and the dahlquist passive sub.? Sounded great.? Of the two pairs I own, I upgraded of the pairs with new crossovers from Regnar (had Regnar rebuild my old ones and mail them back to me) and the other pair is stock.? Both pairs in factory new condition as they have always been in my clean home with minimal movement.? Had one pair woofer re-foamed when it started to sound crackly -- probably 20 years ago now.? I love them now in my 5.1 theater setup -- using just three of them for my L, R, and Center speakers in my theater (along with a high end JVC projector with 135" stewart screen) using just a high end Denon AVR x6700H powering them paired with an HSU powered sub and Alon II rears (huge quality overkill on the rears, I know).
Anyway, here is my issue.? Lately, only during dialog and only VERY faintly, I hear a sizzle when men's voices, from TV shows, coming from I believe the center channel.? This is one of the speakers that has everything as from the factory.? The sizzle during speaking is so faint that only I can hear it, but my wife does not hear it.? Anyway, now that I am attuned to it and am listening for it, it is driving me nuts.? Give this is a virgin speaker, is it the crossover, a speaker, a woofer needing re-foaming, or something else?? Before I start ripping things apart, would love some direction from the group. Thanks |
Greeting, That's quite a surround setup. The first easy move would be to decrease the rear treble pot to see if anything improves. I suspect that center channel info in general is mixed down with intentions of less than full range playback. Which also allows them to boost certain frequency's at will to expand realism. All of which are going to end up over exciting real speakers. If the treble pot fails to chop the offending range. Then you may have to introduce a EQ into the center preamp level chain.? I used Ohm Walsh 2's for my first 4ch A/V rig back when only picture tubes existed. Even long ago it required a EQ to cut back jacked up broadcast levels, as they were optimizing audio for small majority midrange drivers. What l miss the most from the day was the Phillips based Smart Sound. Which provided automatic volume limiting. Something like that would be a welcome addition to today's systems. Especially one with user adjustable limits. So I would suspect artifacts in the signal before a speaker problem. As the may not even bother to filter out what your hearing due to center speakers being incapable of reproducing it to begin with. Have you substituted another 10 for that center to see if anything changes? You could also try disconnecting the piezo which is easy enough. Perhaps both lowering the treble pot and disconnecting the squawker. Best wishes, DD On Sun, Nov 13, 2022, 8:21 AM Patrick Will <pandrewwill@...> wrote: Hi all.? I have two sets of DQ-10's.?
