Re: Regnar!

I have to agree with Andy about Joe, at Regnar, as my experience with him, until now, has been the same. Joe rebuilt my DQ10’s about 16 years ago and did an amazing job, they still perform flawlessly. Nevertheless, I’ve got the tweak bug and am going to make a few minor changes.?

As for headphones and Magnepans, I rebuilt my EC Zana Deux headphone amp and have a pair of Senn HD800’s - listening to this I liken to sticking my head above the clouds; nevertheless, it is still very different from a speaker system (more like a direct wire to the brain) and lacks in bass punch. Magnepans and Martin Logins, have listened to quite a few different sets of speakers and none pleased me as my DQ 10’s do; perhaps because I’ve been listening to them for over 40 years, they’ve become my paradigm, I don’t know. The Maggies can be very transparent and image very well, but are very much lacking in the dynamics department, as compared to the DQ10 - was at least my experience - in fact, my very words to the salesman were: “I don’t like them!” lol But, to each his own, a matter of taste, to some degree.?

Re: Regnar!

Fwiw, there's been problems since way before this pandemic. In fact for decades.?

So I really don't see a need to inject that as a possible cause or excuse. I prefer to just buy French caps and leave the labeling instead of covering existing with house printed stick ons.? After all the Solen's are quite affordable to begin with. I have nothing against them and I'm sure they are suitable. But I also have nothing against the oem yellow caps either.?

If they really were on the ball by now they would have provided voice coil kits for the upper mids and tweeters. And proper surrounds for the lower mids and woofers. It's practically a crime that the limited supply of these drivers are dumped due to the lack of basic services.

But the business model has mostly been for you to ship in whatever and it be magically renewed. But hey kudo's to them for at least providing that..

I had a good Regnar experience about 20 years ago, I dealt with a fellow named Joe. They first sent me collapsed empty boxes, I sent the speakers in and they sent them back via freight. The work was excellent.

But it always seemed like I was dealing with an enterprise that was teetering on collapse, I can’t exactly put my finger on it but that’s how I felt. Communication was spotty at best.

And they still have a poorly designed webpage that hasn’t had a real upgrade in a millennium.

Re: Regnar!

I also find those useful being I don't run tone or balance controls. Some material shines better with a tad more or less tweet output. Same for the bottom end. Here bi-amping introduces 2 volume level settings to deal with. So with those tweet levels you end up with 3 per channel to keep track of. Which does allow for some variance. To date I've yet to? miss tone controls one bit.

Now with that being said I have no idea if those new production pots are worthy. I suspect you need a pot rated for at least 25w. And I guarantee that the vast majority of whatever is out there are nowhere near the oem build quality. I have pondered fabrication of a seven position switch for resistors.??

On second thought I don't have much faith in modern switches either. Perhaps a bundle of 3 or 4 select high grade audio resistors. Where you select which and solder to or break them out with spade lugs would be a sonic improvement over any pot or switch.? But again is there a 25w modern production resistor in the needed values that's suitable? Perhaps in the modern Vishay offering in the TO-220 looking cases. I noticed those awhile back and they are of interest. But I've yet to experiment with them.

A separate small board incorporating 6 or so of those with spade lug connections would be interesting. Like 3,2,1-- 0 +1,2,3db which is just an example. I suspect an even tighter spread could be desirable. Not quite as convenient but likely better sounding.

I the case of these 10's I usually don't recommend mods. But in the case of the tweet level pot I'm all for it. Just keep in mind that a lot of testing went into selecting that oem pot. So don't necessarily expect to beat it sonically with substituting any random pot.

Happy holidays,
DD

Re: Regnar!

Edited

The tweeter pots are not global. They are in a bridge type circuit and only control the range above about 5-6Khz.
That said (cheap) pots are not a reliable long term solution.
The Jameco pots will work in a pinch.
If you can establish a reliable single setting you like, preferably by measuring AND listening, ?a pot can be replaced by two fixed resistors to eliminate the aging/scratchyness issue.?

Done right, this will also greatly improve the channel balance at high frequencies which has a direct effect on imaging.?

If you are interested I can describe how to do this but it requires a good DMM and soldering skills. It is not hard.

Re: Regnar!

Idk. Far more specific freq control then a 50 yr old global pot….that potentially skews the entire network freq range.. to each his own. Anyway to the point & question one doesn’t need regnar for parts…

YMMV I’m sure...

Re: Regnar!

But suit yourself, order two new ones , look at resistor values on ones u pull out of originals and make sure to match if u want. They wk fine as shipped and original knobs fit. I’ve desconeected every such pot on every speaker system I’ve owned under the advise of Robert betts who was Bozaks chief electrical guru! They introduce a polarity shift in mid range thus changing xo points. This is bad enough on a 3 way xo such as Bozaks but utter disarray on a 5x xo… try bypassing and using amp controls to tame 5-12 k hz. Or recap with clarity caps and use the 6.5 &6.0 in those networks. Leave 80uf for woofer alone and piezo tweeter alone as no decent size available to replace and they are in some cases film caps, just change out the 6.5&6.0

If your used 5.6 the 6.0 helps tame brash mid range?

Re: Regnar!

None of what they offer is unique to my knowledge? Simply speakers sell both new are refurbed woofer. There’s plenty of replacements for other drivers. I have several boards as they come up on eBay .btw complete sets can be bought for 300$ so ?prob least exp way to obtain drivers??

There are at least 3 cap and parts list in fikes as well as complete restoration instructions from wires, caps, resistors.?

Regnar is a one or two person operation servicing a 1976 model line?

What do u need them for. All the parts are listed in the files section and they don’t make ANY PARTS! They buy and resell at much higher prices

YMMV I’m sure...

Well, their website is still up and apparently functional, but I guess all that proves is that their website looks like it is functional.? I walked partway through the purchase of a supertweeter, just to see what would happen, and lost interest when I reached this message:

?

??NOTE:?For Security & Verification Purposes,?Once Your Order Is Placed,

??????????????????????????????????????????????A Representative Will Call To Process Your Order (During Business Hours).?Thank you.

?

If that is true, purchasing an item might be a way to get someone on the line, or it might be a way to cast money into the void…
