Happy Halloween Halloween's Origin and Haunted Ireland Did you know that Halloween originated over 2,000 years ago with Ireland’s Celtic festival of Samhain? This day marked the end of harvest season and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, and was often a time associated with death. People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Samhain took place at the ancient ritual site of Tlachtga, now named the Hill of Ward, near Athboy. In 2015, my sister Sandra and I attended the Samhain Festival of Fire in Athboy and visited Ireland’s most haunted castles. We received a private tour of Leap Castle, which is often referred to as the most haunted castle in the world. Charleville Castle has appeared on the TV shows Scariest Places on Earth and Ghost Hunters International. We didn't see any ghosts, but we freaked ourselves out a few times. (See the below photos.) Besides ancient castles, what could be more haunted than a pub built into a cemetery’s stone wall? Located in northern Dublin, Kavanagh’s pub is also known as “The Gravediggers” since cemetery workers frequented the establishment. One of the pub’s regular patrons is an elderly gent in vintage tweed attire, who sits at the bar enjoying a pint, then vanishes. I didn’t meet him when I dined at the pub this past summer, yet I bought a cool souvenir T-shirt. Conveniently located next to the pub is Glasnevin Cemetery. Ireland’s most haunted graveyard. You’re sure to hook up with a guided tour on Halloween. More than 1.5 million people are buried there, including the Irish hero, Michael Collins. However, one of the cemetery’s most famous stories is about a Newfoundland dog. When his master died, the loyal canine companion refused to leave the gravesite, starving to death. People have spotted the dog’s apparition by the tombstone. A sad, yet endearing tale. One haunted spot I haven’t visited is Kilmainham Gaol. The thought of stepping foot inside the Dublin prison sends a chill up my spine. The leaders of many Irish rebellions, including the 1916 Easter Rising, were imprisoned and executed here. The prison closed in 1924 but is open for tours. Maybe next Halloween… Spooky Halloween facts Halloween is one of the world’s oldest traditions, it began in Ireland and dates back 2,000 years to the Celts, who called it Samhain. The Halloween costume actually had a practical purpose – the Celts would dress up in order to blend in with spirits. Our printable masks for Halloween make for some great costume ideas. In the Celtic calendar, 1st November was the start of the new year, and they celebrated their version of New Year’s Eve known as All Hallows Eve. When All Hallow’s Eve was co-opted by Christians, the new tradition became to dress up as the devil in the belief that Satan would flee when he saw people mocking him and attacking his pride. Witches used to be honoured and were known as ‘the crone’ amongst the Celts until fear of older women, particularly those who didn’t marry, spread and the kindly figure of the crone morphed in the popular mind into a cackling evil witch. The name ‘witch’ comes from the old Saxon word ‘wica’ and it means ‘wise one’. The last legal witch hangings in England took place in Bideford, Devon and the last in Scotland took place in Dornoch, Sutherland. During World War II when sugar was rationed, trick or treating began to disappear; luckily today it’s back and bigger than ever! Traditions and traditional things The tradition of adding pranks into the Halloween mix started to turn ugly in the 1930s and a movement began to substitute practical jokes for kids going door to door collecting sweets… …But trick or treaters used to receive fruits and nuts, not chocolate and sweets. Franklin Graham and his teams from Samaritan’s Purse help needy Americans in southwestern Florida. Hurricane Ian not only left a path of destruction in Florida, but also added homeless or lost pets to animal shelters that were already struggling with being overcapacity. Manatee County Animal Welfare was one of many shelters across south Florida experiencing a surge in animals post-Ian, Fox 13 Tampa Bay reported. "We started to see almost double the animals coming into our facility on a daily basis," Sarah Brown, the division chief of Manatee County Animal Services, told the outlet. "While we were already at critical capacity it was even more critical to start to move some of those adoptable animals out to new places." That's when Wings of Rescue stepped in to help, a non-profit organization that takes flight to transport shelter pets. The mission is to move pets from overcrowded and disaster-ridden areas to empty shelters across North America. HURRICANE IAN DISPLACED SCORES OF PETS IN FLORIDA: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Wings of Rescue volunteers load animals in crates into an airplane for transport. (@greatbearmedia via Wings of Rescue/Facebook) According to the organization's website, 28 dogs from Manatee County Animal Welfare were put into crates and loaded onto a plane piloted by volunteers Kale Garcia and Angela Keeling on Wednesday. "We love flying, and we love animals, and we put those two together," Keeling told Fox 13. Garcia added that it is "super important" to give the dogs a second chance at life. The dogs transported out of Manatee County were up for adoption before the hurricane hit and were chosen to break out of the shelter in order to make room for animals displaced by Ian. By freeing up kennels, the shelter can hold onto incoming pets longer than usual in hopes of reuniting them with their owners. Manatee County Animal Welfare added it is scanning incoming pets for microchips and posting photos online to make others aware of the animals coming in. OKLAHOMA POLICE REUNITE WOLFDOG WITH OWNER: 'LIKE A CUDDLY PUPPY' next Image 1 of 3 Wings of Rescue volunteers prepare to load 28 dogs onto a plane for transport. (WTVT) The pups on the Wings of Rescue flight were heading to New York, Vermont and Maryland in hopes of finding their forever families. As of Monday, the rescue shared it has flown 65,284 shelter pets to forever homes over its 10 years in operation. "Kindness still really does exist, and it’s so nice to see these people coming out to help pets that are displaced, and these homeless pets find a second chance at a forever home," Brown told Fox 13. "It’s really been an emotional experience for us today, and we are grateful." Many other animal rescues, including Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the SPCA of Florida, have also taken in animals from the Manatee County shelters following Ian. Manatee County Animal Welfare said there are still 100 cats, 125 dogs and one bird at the building ready for adoption.

? Who Needs a good laugh today ??? Grandma is eighty-eight years old and still drives her own car. She writes: Dear Grand-daughter, The other day I went up to our local Christian book store and saw a 'Honk if you love Jesus' bumper sticker .. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting. So, I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper.. Boy, am I glad I did; what an uplifting experience that followed. I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed. I found that lots of people love Jesus! While I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, 'For the love of God!' 'Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ, GO!' What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out my window and started waving and smiling at all those loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love! ; There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a sunny beach. I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked my young teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant. He said it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I have never met anyone from Hawaii , so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign right back. My grandson burst out laughing. Why even he was enjoying this religious experience!! A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, grinning, I waved at all my brothers and sisters, and drove on through the intersection. I noticed that I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared. So I slowed the car down, leaned out the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!! Shameless! Snagged from a friend! I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 60 years later. I don't have to go to school or work. I get an allowance every month. I have my own pad. I don't have a curfew. I have a driver's license and my own car. The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant and I don't have acne. Life is great. I changed my car horn to gunshot sounds. People get out of the way much faster now. Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers. I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row. I decided to stop calling the bathroom "John" and renamed it the "Jim". I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning. Old age is coming at a really bad time. When I was a child I thought "nap time" was a punishment. Now it feels like a small vacation. The biggest lie I tell myself is... " I don't have to write that down, I'll remember it". I don't have gray hair... I have "wisdom highlights"! I'm just very wise. If God wanted me to touch my toes, He would've put them on my knees. Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met yet. Why do I have to press one for English when you're just going to transfer me to someone I can't understand anyway?
