How does Remote Desktop respond to 2 monitor configuration?
I'm using a single monitor and can't take it anymore.? I'm adding a second monitor.? I have a question that maybe someone can answer.? I do most of my operating from a remote PC, using Windows Remote Desktop to access my shack PC.? If I add a second monitor in the shack and configure DXlab to use two monitors, what happens if I remote in with a Remote Desktop session that is set up for a single monitor.? Does DXlab detect a single monitor state and move everything back to that desktop, or will I miss seeing everything that the local desktop has on the second monitor?

Dean I have been using at least 2 monitors for a very?long time. I can move windows from one to the?other without any problems. so far nothing has changed in operation. I have RHR on one monitor?and DXLab on the other. Moving windows back and forth makes no difference. 73 Jack AK7O On Mon, May 26, 2025 at 3:52?PM Dean W8ZF via <dwfred=[email protected]> wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI use AnyDesk. ?It works great for me. ?It will work with Windows or Apple. ?It has a toggle in the menu bar that lets you switch between screen 1 and screen 2. ?I have been doing a lot of FT8 so I set up my main screen with the windows I use most (WSJTX, JTALert, DXCommander, SpotCollector, DXView, DXKeeper). ?Other apps are on the second screen.Tom - KQ5S

Dean, another thot: At one time i had 4 monitors over my station and found that a bit much. All the applications I had open worked fine however. Presently I have 2 32 inch monitors so I have lots of territory to spread out windows. Now I have no station as we moved to a condo and I only operate RHR. Sold or gave away all my radios, antennas etc.? As a sidelight: CW has always been my favorite mode and am sorry to note that FT8 seems to have taken over most of the CW activity.? just plug in the 2nd monitor and configure it as an extension?of your present monitor to simplify operation.? 73 Jack AK7O On Mon, May 26, 2025 at 4:12?PM TOM-KQ5S via <kq5stom=[email protected]> wrote:

Windows maps those coordinates to one or more monitors. + I don't know what provisions "Windows Remote Desktop" provides to select from among multiple monitors. ? ? ? 73, ? ? ? ? ? ?Dave, AA6YQ |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJust in case this might be helpful ¡?I often run a Flex station along with DXLab Suite and a bunch of other stuff remotely. ?My station is packed into a small section of one room. ?But I need a lot of screen real estate so I use two monitors and also three windows workspaces. ?Workspaces are part of windows and are very easy to set up. ?They provide multiple, uh ..., well,?workspaces?on a single computer. After setting them up (two minutes to search for instructions AND do the set up), how that works is this: one chooses the first workspace (three finger drag left/right on track pad) which in my case includes the laptop¡¯s screen plus the the second monitor and sets things up there as desired. ?I have DXLab suite with several of its windows plus associated apps on those two screens. ?Drag left and the second workspace shows up. ?It starts as two new empty screens. ?Then set them up as desired. ?In my case, depending on what I¡¯m doing I might have WSJT-X and JTAlert with a bunch of their windows open on the laptop monitor and GridTracker on the other, all also with a bunch of their windows open. ?Slide left again, two more empty windows. ?There I put SSDR and its utilities on the laptop monitor and N1MM on the left or maybe other things depending on what I¡¯m doing. So now, I swipe right to go back to workspace 2 with it¡¯s two windows and again to workspace 1; back and forth as necessary. ?Because it¡¯s microsoft-garbage software, it has it's annoying bugs which you¡¯ll quickly discover but they¡¯re pretty easily workaroundable and in this case, worth the trouble (at least to me). I know this doesn¡¯t address your question but here¡¯s the thing. ?When I¡¯m operating remote I don¡¯t use microsoft remote desktop because of the very limitations you¡¯re asking about, plus I would never use any?microsoft product that I could avoid. ?I do have it setup as an emergency backup (which I¡¯ve never had to use) but what I count on is TeamViewer ? (). ? And the reason I went though all that initial description of my setup is TeamView easily allows me to see and control ALL of that stuff remotely. ?I see both monitors (there are several optional views) and can move back and forth between those workspaces almost as easily as if I were sitting in front of the computer itself. ?It seems to use almost no bandwidth (somehow ?) and works perfectly. ?And, it¡¯s absolutely free for this application of it. ?They do charge for commercial use but not for casual, private use. ?I use it when my girlfriend and I are at our vacation house for weeks at a time with no problem. I won¡¯t consume reader b/w describing how to set it up and use it here but it is ridiculously easy and will take all of ten minutes to do the set up (any network?idiosyncrasies?you may have notwithstanding) and another ten to figure out how to use it. ?Plus there¡¯s a ton of support information on-line if you need it. ?FWIW I¡¯ve heard PCAnywhere is similar but I have no experience with it. Hope that helps ! GL Russ KR6W On May 26, 2025, at 3:44?PM, Ed via groups.io <wa6wgs@...> wrote: |
There are many replies with detailed info.? It will take me a while to wade through them.? I may just buy another monitor and try it out, using some of these suggestions. I'll report the results, for future reference when I do. I do prefer Windows Remote Desktop because it is well integrated with Windows OS and has some effective compression of the video, reducing the bandwidth requirements. I have tried several other remote desktops, but keep coming back.

Thanks to everyone for all the detailed comments!
