FT891 User-defined controls
+ AA6YQ comments below
I just picked up a Yaesu FT-891 for POTA/SOTA use. It easily configured with the DXLabs Suite. I am curious if anyone has any User-defined Controls or sliders they would be willing to share. I looked in the Files section and did not see any for the 891. + Since Yaesu switched to a more Kenwood-like CAT instruction set, there's more commonality among the radios. The FT-2000 Audio Gain Slider, for example, should work with your FT-891. Some of the FTDX-3000 controls should also work with some or no modification. + Do you have a copy of the FT-891 CAT Operation Reference Book? 73, Dave, AA6YQ |
Also available directly from Yaesu:

Thank you Joe and others for the help. I am very green when it comes to these types of things. For example I would like to set up a User-defined control for switching the meter to the SWR. In looking in the instructions, it appears that the command string starts with FA. So I put in FAMS3;MS;MS3;
The example at the beginning of the PDF instructions shows how to switch to a certain frequency using the FA. Can you enlighten me what I've done wrong? I ask for you to go easy on me with this because I'm just not the programming type. |
In looking in the instructions, it appears that the command stringNo, FA<P1>; is the command to 1) tell the rig to report the frequency of VFO A or 2) Set VFO A to a frequency <P1>. For example I would like to set up a User-defined control forThe FT-891 command to switch the Meter to SWR is simply MS3;, to ALC is MS1; to Power Out is MS2; The Commander syntax for sending an ASCII command requires placing and apostrophe (') before the command to indicate ASCII instead of hexadecimal. You might get some ideas by looking at the FT-450 command examples in the files area -> Command Sequences and Sliders -> Yaesu -> FT-450 "FT450 Meter Control.txt" selects ALC, Power Out, and SWR sequentially. Note you will need to check the examples against the FT-891 documentation as the command sets are not identical (particularly in VFO control). 73, ... that of the FT-950. You might want to experiment with some of the User Defined Commands and Sliders for the FT-950 (from the files area). It is often easier to learn the process by starting with some examples that others have already debugged. 73, ... Joe, W4TV On 2020-06-18 1:57 PM, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote:

Joe - I'm still very fuzzy on this, but I did get the ON/OFF button from the 950 as well as the NB working with the 891. I have several other things I want to add so I'll see if I can figure out from those two buttons some other sequences. I have not tried any sliders yet but some of those that Dave put up there should be helpful if they work for the 891 as well.
Thank you for your help! |
Scott, I sent you some sequence buttons and sliders for the ft-891. It was easier just to send you those all files to then upload each one individually to the group. Dave thank you for all you do it is truly appreciated. ( is there an easy way to upload all those text files in a batch instead of one by one) please let me know. Thank you again Ken ke2sr

Ken,
Thank you so much. I got some that will be very useful. Two buttons that I could really use is to change the meter to different meters like PO/SWR etc. and the other to change the mode from SSB/CW/FM/AM etc. I was looking at the other Yaesu sliders and I just cannot wrap my head around what I would do for the 891.? I found creating User defined controls in my ICOM 7300 much easier for some reason. 73 Scott |

I need some help with this. I got the slider to work for DNR, I think. But I don't know how to enter the text for the button to turn on DNR. Can I get an explanation on how to enter the text into DX Commander user defined buttons? + Take a look at some of the examples here: /g/DXLab/files/Command%20Sequences%20and%20Sliders/Yaesu/FT-891 + If they don't get you going, please let me know. 73, Dave, AA6YQ |

Thanks..but I still don't get it.? Don't I need to set up a button to turn on DNR ( for example)? and then a slider for the settings?? Can't figure out the button settings. + You can do that. Did you look at some of the FT-891 controls I cited to see how they direct the radio to enable/disable a particular function? ? ? ?73, |
