VISTA - Continuing Saga

Harold Aaron

Hi folks. There has been much discussion concerning VISTA and its failure
to properly host current Ham-related programs.

I just received a new (refurbished) computer from Dell and of course, it has
VISTA on it. Some background first: I have basically two independent
stations. Station 1 – XP with MicroHam II controlling FT-2K. No problems
at all – works fine. The second station is a PRO III with a RigBlaster PRO
(old – two serial port connections for FSK). The new computer was destined
to control the 2nd station.

Always log into VISTA as Administrator, so no problems with program install.
DXLab, N1MM, WriteLog and others installed, and all function OK. Using a
KEYSPAN USB to 4 serial ports, and that installed and works fine under
VISTA.

Now is where the interesting part comes in. Trying to get MMTTY or
WinWarbler to run FSK has been a total disaster. I did manage to get CW
working, so PTT and the serial connections are OK. Have disabled the
on-board RealTEK HD Audio card, and installed a Creative Audigy ZS which has
Line In/Out, as well as MIC in. This card worked well on the old computer
under XP, so no suspicions as to the cards’ function.

WinWarbler soundcard is set up with “What You Hear” for Reception and
“Speakers (Creative SB Audigy )” as Transmission under the soundcard setup.
I am getting good audio to the decoder and it decodes incoming RTTY fine.
MMTTY set up OK to do FSK. However, when I transmit (both programs) I get
PTT activation and a steady carrier out – no modulation. Audio in from Rig
(ACC plug) is OK to the RigBlaster. Line Out from the RigBlaster to the
soundcard has audio, but at perhaps ? the level of the audio coming into the
RigBlaster. Anyway, getting receive audio OK. When I check line in from
the soundcard, there is no modulation – nothing out of the soundcard back to
the RigBlaster while transmitting, so no FSK input on the PRO III. Also,
nothing on Line Out of the RigBlaster to Line In of the Soundcard when
transmitting.

Normally I would expect the RigBlaster to be malfunctioning. However, with
the variables of VISTA and a difficult interface (RigBlaster PRO), I was
wondering if anyone has had success in getting such a mishmash to function
under VISTA. Would really appreciate any suggestions as next step is to
trash the RigBlaster PRO and reinstall XP on the computer. I would really
like to keep VISTA if possible as it is not going to go away and future OSs
from Microsoft are likely to follow the VISTA path. Pain now prevents pain
in the future I guess! <ha> Joe, got any good deals? <ha>

Really appreciate hearing any success stories (if there are any)…

Thanks much and 73,

Hank WB4ROA

I'm running an eMachine ($240 with the $60 store rebate) with Vista Home Basic. Burned out the on board sound interface and installed a $20 Envoy Sound Card. I use the WinWarbler Sound Card 0 Line In (Envy 24 Family Audio) for PSK Reception and 0 Speakers (Envy 24 Family Audio) PSK Transmission. Then click on Transmission button and adjust Speakers level (the speaker output drives the radio microphone input via your interface). I normally have monitor speakers plugged into the audio out jack of my RIGblaster nomic so that I have some idea of the audio freq and level going to the transmitter. Everything seems to work and is easily adjusted via the WW Config panel.

Be sure you have the latest version of MMTTY as it is now set to allow
specification of each sound port undependably. It works perfectly on Vista.
You also ,must run and install in the administrator account. Do these two
things and it will work well.

Are you running the current version of WinWarbler (5.8.7)?

WinWarbler soundcard is set up with ???What You Hear??? for Reception and
???Speakers (Creative SB Audigy )??? as Transmission under the soundcard setup.

If you are transmitting via FSK, there will be no audio output.
I am getting good audio to the decoder and it decodes incoming RTTY fine.
MMTTY set up OK to do FSK. However, when I transmit (both programs) I get
PTT activation and a steady carrier out ??? no modulation. Audio in from Rig
(ACC plug) is OK to the RigBlaster. Line Out from the RigBlaster to the
soundcard has audio, but at perhaps ??? the level of the audio coming into the
RigBlaster. Anyway, getting receive audio OK. When I check line in from

the RigBlaster while transmitting, so no FSK input on the PRO III. Also,
nothing on Line Out of the RigBlaster to Line In of the Soundcard when
transmitting.

Transmitting by FSK (as opposed to AFSK) means using a serial port TxD,
RTS, or DTR signal to convey the "information to be transmitted" through a
level converter that then drives the RTTY or FSK input on the back of your
transceiver. It sounds like you have Winwarbler configured for FSK but are
"cabled" for AFSK.

Hey Dave, and thanks for the input. You got my brain straight. I was
looking at the audio lines as if AFSK. I now know that I need to put the
scope on the FSK Out from the RigBlaster and see if anything is actually
going to the PRO III FSK input keying. After a few hours it is really easy
to get wrapped around the axle and not see the forest for the trees. Thanks
for getting me back on the right path! VISTA is still a mess, but I guess
we are stuck with it. Congrats by the way. The award only confirms what we
already knew!

For FSK operation, open the RTTY tab of WinWarbler's Config window, and in
the "Modulation and transceiver mode" panel

1. set the FSK sub-panel to LSB

2. set the "Xcvr Mode" selector to RTTY

3. set the "Mark Offset" to -2125

4. set the "Optimal Offset" to 2210

5. if your RigBlaster supports PTT and FSK via the same serial port and can
generate FSK from that port's TxD pin, then set the "FSK Control" to the
appropriate serial port; otherwise, set the "FSK Control" to ExtFSK, and
then configure the ExtFSK application to the appropriate serial port and
modem control signal for FSK.

On the Main window, set the Mode panel to CW, and then set it back to RTTY
to apply the above changes.

Dave, AA6YQ

Dear Hank,

Sorry to hi-jack this thread but I see you have both the Pro 111 and
the FT2K in the shack. I would be really interested in an unbiased
comparison (if that is possible). Particularly interested in CW
capabilities in pile-up situations.
