New Computer

My PC is at least 12 years old and W11 is not supported starting late 2025
due to the new security chip requirements. I could continue with W10 and
live without the security updates (Not about to pay the Microsoft support
charges for getting another year or 3) . if I use it only for radio, I
suppose I could ignore the security loss??? . It is a hard decision since
it has MANY ports and a video card that I added so it supports my 2 HDMI
monitors (3 with the built in video) and also added an SSD which helped a
lot for speed. It does take about 60 seconds for DXLABS to start ALL of
the DXLAB applications.

On the other hand it will be hard to give up all the other applications
and use only y laptop for those. I have a Lenovo which is very good but it
has no practical way to add monitors. No HDMI output, no video output at
all.

Looking for suggestions. It is going to be a pain moving to a new machine.
Dave has great documentation about doing that but is not a 2 minute
operation. Radio is TS590SG and WinKeyer which have given no trouble.

Gil,

If you're satisfied with the performance, why not just use a security suite/program you're comfortable with?

Not a bad idea. I use defender but that probably will not get updates either
once W10 support ends. I have been very happy with Defender and it would
take a huge step to get me to change.

Long term running older versions of Windows presents as-of-yet unknown?security vulnerabilities not only to you but everyone sharing the network with you. If your PC is on the Internet, it should be up to date.

It turns out there are ways to bypass the checks to upgrade to Win11. Here's a link from Microsoft themselves:

You probably aren't interested, but a system that old has probably accumulated a lot of cruft and is likely to start acting up - hard drives, fans, etc. A new system with enough grunt can be relatively inexpensive and would come with 11. Yes, you'd have to move all your stuff and reinstall apps you need. You'll likely find a bunch you don't use anymore and save some perf and space that way.

I'm a nerd and into this, so I rebuilt my system every year anyway.

I recently replaced my XYL Kathe's aging PC with a PowerSpec B751, which comes with Windows 11 installed:

It's what I would get if I were replacing the system I use to develop and run DXLab.

Many good PCs out there but most are not available around here and many not even by shipment. This is probably way beyond the needs of DXLabs but I would run a lot of other thigs too. I bet my chess engine app would destroy even the world champion on owe of? these.

Tanks for the recommendations. I guess I still have over a year to decide.

There is a store near Minneapolis (St. Louis Park). Only about 75 miles from me. I will have to check that out. Thanks.

Too bad we lost Radio City. It was a great radio store and was also a seller of telescopes for the Astronomy hobbyists. They had instore repair too.

?

Only plus was the good deal on my TS590-SG that was a demo unit. It had all the accessories installed too.

And Good luck trying to save money and build one with a 13th Generation I7 or I9 with a bundle at microcenter. Intel made a big jump from the 12th Gen to the 13th Gen. With the prices of the 13th Gen coming down, they are getting picked up quick. The last I7 13th Gen bundle I saw was over a month ago when I helped a buddy build basically the same computer.

I was planning to pick one up at the end of the year, when the prices really come down, but I may be out of luck.

And 1300$ is correct. He paid 1700$ with an extra 32G of ram, a very fast NVME drive and had Microcenter build it for him.
