Re: Problem Installing Launcher

The Windows Scripting Host (later renamed to Windows Script Host and often referred to as just WSH) has been an integral part of every version of Windows since Windows 2000 and is available for download for all versions of Windows all they way back to Windows 95. It can also be installed by every version of Internet Explorer since V 5.0.

So, if you don't have it in Windows XP, it seems like something is corrupt in your system. However, you can try downloading and installing from Microsoft at :

Re: Strange addresses from QRZ.com

From USPS.com ():

"....
The last line of the address block area must include only the complete country name (no abbreviations) written in uppercase letters.
...."

It also said that language specific addresses are permitted but the city, province, and country must
also appear in English.

I don't know how strictly this is enforced. "U.K." has worked in the past for example. I know I
had a USPS employee squawk about the extra marks of another language but a more senior
employee said it was readable in English by ignoring the marks and took it. The characters
were Roman letters specified by USPS but had extra marks.

There are some, like San Marino, that if you go to the USPS site to look up

The addresses for both XE1XOE and TG9ANF contain the name of their postal
country in the third line, causing DXKeeper to not append a fourth line
containing the postal country:

Miguel E. Arechavaleta Velasco
A.P. 191
Valle de Bravo, ESTADO DE MEXICO, C.P. 51200

Francisco F. Vassaux N.
P. O. Box 50 - C
Guatemala City

I have modified the next version of DXKeeper to append a fourth line
containing the postal country unless the third line contains only the
postal
country (which I have seen in some addresses). This produces the following
addresses for XE1XOE and TG9AN:

Miguel E. Arechavaleta Velasco
A.P. 191
Valle de Bravo, ESTADO DE MEXICO, C.P. 51200
Mexico

Francisco F. Vassaux N.
P. O. Box 50 - C
Guatemala City
Guatemala

This may produce addresses where the third line specifies the Postal
Country
and a postal zone, and the fourth line redundantly specifies the Postal
Country, but this shouldn't impede delivery; however, omitting the postal
country entirely, as is currently the case with TG9ANF, could be
problematic.

On the one hand, I hardly ever use WW for CW, so I've just kept the default settings for the WinKeyer and WW.

When I sometimes *do* use WW for CW, it seems to work fine - running it with a K3 and have the VOX set real quick. Getting a new amp in January that will allow QSK.

I got my first hard drive around 1981. It was bigger than a breadbox, made a lot more noise and was a whopping 5 MB! Ran off an Apple IIe clone. I don't remember the cost, but it was a hell of a lot more than one pays for a good hard drive these days!

Thanks for posting your info on your drives. I'm still running XP and have thus far avoided the Vista experience. When my oldest PC (there are five of them in the house) needs replacing, it will most likely have Windows 7 on it.

I hung onto DOS for a long, long time. Around the time Win 98SE came out, I figured I'd better get on board. Missed all the problems with WIN95 and WIN98 1st edition, but got accidentally snared with the ME edition. Such is life.

I've been keeping an eye on the WIKI Dave keeps updated so when I make the change to WIN7 I'll be ready - I hope!

When I bought my new shack computer a few months ago (A Dell Vostro
420), it came standard with a 320 Gb hard drive. However, for very
little additional cost (if any at all) I elected to go with two 160 Gb
hard drives instead. It's the same amount of storage space but split
across two physically separate hard drives. I then precoded to follow
Microsoft's recommendation for systems with more than one hard drive and
split the paging file across both hard drives to reduce head contention
during paging operations. In addition, I put frequently accessed data
files such as,"Spots.mdb", on the second drive so that spot database
accesses would not contend with normal system operations on the main
drive. I haven't run any benchmark tests to try and measure the
performance advantage but what I can say is that incoming spots and spot
lookups even with a 30 Mb spot database and contest spots coming in at
500+ an hour SpotCollector creates no noticeable performance hit whatsoever.

And to think that my first PC 20 some years ago had a whopping total
hard drive space of 20 Mb. That's not even big enough for a week of
spots in Spots.mdb :-)

Outlook consumes a lot of RAM if you have a large PST file (e.g. if you've
retained a lot of messages).

If your PC is short on RAM, it will spend a lot of time swapping information
between RAM and your hard drive - which makes your system's performance more
dependent on CPU and disk speed. Note that 32-bit flavors of Windows will
only use the first 3G of RAM; to fully exploit a system with 4G of RAM
installed, you'll need a 64-bit version of Windows.

I realize this is a DUMB question.
I am not familiar with the DOK database.
Obviously a European( Belgium, Germany?) orginization.
Educate me please.

>>>DOK is the abbreviation for "Distrikts Ortsverbands Kenner", which in
German means "District Location Code". The German Amateur Radio Club (DARC)
defines these districts, and issues various awards to amateurs who work
stations within them. DXKeeper enables you to record a DOK in each QSO with
a German station, and enables you to generate a DOK progress report. Some
DOKs are defined for special events and other temporary situations, so the
list of valid DOKs is contained in a file that you can update; the file's
name is Award230.txt, and it lives in DXKeeper's Databases folder. Koen
ON7RK has been posting updated versions of this file every few months; his
most recent update is included with each new version of DXKeeper, but you
can immediately download it from this group's Files area.

Thanks for this explanation, Dave. I have a couple of questions, but I
think that perhaps Koen might be able to answer them. Is there a map of
Germany that shows these districts? I have quite a few QSL cards and
LOTW confirmations which do not show the station's DOK. Does it have to
show on the card to be eligible for awards?

When I click on a RTTY spot in SC, Commander sets my FT-1000MP to DUAL and
SPLIT and sets VFO A to QRG and VFO B to QSX.

Now that is OK with me BUT, the WW waterfall frequencies are VFO B. The QRG
frequency is not even visible. So then, what I do, is turn off DUAL and
SPLIT, leave VFO A on QRG and uncheck the 'net' box on WW. This permits me
to QSX on the waterfall using the right mouse button.

This seems like too many unnecessary steps but is the only way that I can
see the QRG frequency on the waterfall which is necessary for correct
tuning.

What bright light out there can show me another way?

Re: Strange addresses from QRZ.com

The addresses for both XE1XOE and TG9ANF contain the name of their postal
country in the third line, causing DXKeeper to not append a fourth line
containing the postal country:

Miguel E. Arechavaleta Velasco
A.P. 191
Valle de Bravo, ESTADO DE MEXICO, C.P. 51200

Francisco F. Vassaux N.
P. O. Box 50 - C
Guatemala City

I have modified the next version of DXKeeper to append a fourth line
containing the postal country unless the third line contains only the postal
country (which I have seen in some addresses). This produces the following
addresses for XE1XOE and TG9AN:

Miguel E. Arechavaleta Velasco
A.P. 191
Valle de Bravo, ESTADO DE MEXICO, C.P. 51200
Mexico

Francisco F. Vassaux N.
P. O. Box 50 - C
Guatemala City
Guatemala

This may produce addresses where the third line specifies the Postal Country
and a postal zone, and the fourth line redundantly specifies the Postal
Country, but this shouldn't impede delivery; however, omitting the postal
country entirely, as is currently the case with TG9ANF, could be
problematic.

Re: Strange addresses from QRZ.com

It was Larry W6NWS who reported the problem.

I just tried a lookup of XE1XOE: it now returns

<country>Mexico</country>
<ccode>171</ccode>

The country is now correct, but the country code remains incorrect (171 is
Mellish Reef).

TG9ANF now returns

<country>Guatemala</country>
<ccode>111</ccode>

111 is the country code for Heard Island.

Dave,

Thanks for finding this. I should have seen it earlier today.

I've been having problems with country codes as they apply to addresses
(as opposed to DXCC) and was forced to use a separate identifier for the
mailing country in the database.

The change should have been transparent except that I forgot to add it to
the XML interface.

All fixed now. Thanks again for the report.

Note in particular the

<country>Mellish Reef</country>
<ccode>171</ccode>

TG9ANF produces a similarly incorrect result.

Fred, this looks like a QRZ.com problem.

Dave, AA6YQ

Subject: [dxlab] Strange addresses from QRZ.com

I was doing some lookups today using the Address Editor and got some strange
stuff. XE1XOE, for example, ended with "mellish reef"! TG9ANF address ended
up
"heard island". If I go directly to QRZ the correct countries show up in the
address.

I am running DXK 8.3.4 and PF 4.6.0. I got the same result whether I was
logged
in to QRZ or not or whether PF was up or not. I had not seen this behavior
before.

RTTY problem solved

Chuck Chandler

Fixed. The Orion has a sepaprate gain in software for the rear AUX input. Mine was set to 4%. Advancing it increased power appropriately.

Re: Clarification

On the Config window's Soundcard tab, click the "Mixer adjustments" panel's
Transmission button. This will display a "Playback control" window whose
contents and nomenclature may be dependent upon your specific soundcard.
There should be a control to adjust the volume of the "Wave" device; there
may also be an overall volume control. Increase the settings of these
controls in small steps and then see if your power output has increased when
you transmit.

Dave, AA6YQ

The Orion rf output was set to 60%. Should have been about 60 watts.

Sounds like you're transmitting, then.

You mentioned that another RX in the shack is copying your signal,
which
would lend credence to this assumption.

Is the power out control at its normal level?

Rig is Orion. Interface is microham USB interface II. VOX is via the
interfaces ptt, which works. At least, when I put my call into the tx
pane and hit f2 the rig switches to transmit, sends my call, then
tweedles until I send f4.

Which interface are you using, and which rig? Are you using VOX at
the rig, or in the CAT or in the interface? Sounds like you are not
turning the rig keying on.

When I transmit RTTY I hear my own transmitted tones in my phones, as
the monitor is on. That might have been unclear. I'm just not seeing
any power output.
