Re: Installing DXLab on Win11 machine

Hi James,
?
I've recently completed an upgrade from WIN10 to WIN11 followed by migration of DXLab to WIN11. As with all things DXLab, the documentation for doing this is complete, correct, and up-to-date.
If you can follow written directions you will be successful. Take your time. Be sure you understand what the directions want you to do. Let us know that you have been successful.

How will the use of different monitors (number, resolution etc.) between the 2 PCs affect the transfer?? Especially when loading the workspace?? Beyond perhaps the need to rearrange the various DXLab windows on the new PC?

Re: Installing DXLab on Win11 machine

I just did such a transfer from a Wn10 to a new Win11 machine. Do EXACTLY what Dave delineates in his instructions. It all worked great. The only mistake I made was failing to transfer one or two of the files he told me to do. Then, once I did that, all was well.

It will take a bit of time, but if you are careful and do what the instructions say, it will work fine.

Re: Contesting

So if you're a casual contester, you can have N1MM+ with packet and running with DXKeeper, Spot Collector & DXView with the N1MM Gateway.
You log into M1MM and it automatically shows up in DXKeeper.? With total transparancy, works nearly flawless here.
I did have some RF causing an issue during the CQ160. A friend has not been able to make it work (still troubleshooting).
Real easy way to have the best of both worlds with little configuration!!

Since I was there for the start of ADIF, and was the one who assigned N5KO to evaluate the use of ADIF for a universal contest log checking format, which resulted in the development of the Cabrillo format, don't expect ADIF to become the standard for contest log checking in the future. Use N1MM for contests and upload after the fact to DXLab. Each has their purpose, and only a couple of mouse clicks are required.

I'm a long-time N1MM user. Typically more than a dozen fairly mainstream contests a year, all supported by N1MM. Although I've never needed it, N1MM does have the option of user-defined contests (UDF). I suggest you study the N1MM doc on that, and ask on the N1MM reflector if you need help. And I think VE3KI monitors this and other reflectors as a member of the N1MM team, and answers a lot of questions.

+ If you're serious enough about contesting to require Cabrillo generation for "lesser" contests, log your QSOs with N1MM; after generating Cabrillo, export your QSOs to ADIF, and then import them into DXKeeper.

+ DXLab explicitly does not - and will not - support serious contesting; it enables DXers to participate in contests in search of "new ones". Cabrillo generation for major contests is only provided so that DXers can discharge their "responsibility" for having made QSOs in a major contest.

+ Some fine day, the contesting community will switch to ADIF, which would support every contest.

?

Haaah , good luck with that. I thought ADIF was supposed to be the be all and end all when it started but I guess not. ?

I agree, Dave. I've always logged contests in a contest logger (N1MM for 15+ years, before that WriteLog), generated Cabrillo for contest submissions from those contest loggers, and exported ADIF to DXKeeper which is my primary logger that keeps track of awards, interacts with LOTW, eQSL, ClubLog beautifully.

Contest loggers keep track of dupes according to contest rules, can use F-Key files to send CQ, contest exchanges, fills, etc, to greatly speed up your operation, generate Cabrillo files for submission if you're competing, generate ADIF to send to your main logger, which for me has been DXKeeper for 20 years.

But if you're contesting to pick up DX or other QSOs for awards, FIRST learn how contests work. Answer a CQ with ONLY your call. On SSB and RTTY, twice, and LISTEN! On CW, once and listen. Repeat on both modes only if he hasn't answered anyone. When you're answered, ONLY send your exchange -- never send your call again if the other station got it right, and don't send HIS call again -- he knows it! On SSB, he'll get you by the timing of your response and your voice, on CW by that timing and the frequency of your note. And never send your exchange until you're copied his!

Nothing extra -- no "please copy," no "good luck in the contest," --
contesters are trying for 2-3 QSOs per minute, so all that extra stuff slows us down! Program F-Keys for common fills that are unique to a contest, like numbers or State/Province, and put spaces before and after on RTTY and CW, so that what you're sending doesn't run together with noise on the other guy's screen or his ears.

I will begin with "DXLabs does not support xxxxxxxx" and the x's in my case was the WIA Australia Day contest.
The contest itself runs from 25 Jan 2200 UTC to 26 Jan 1000 UTC and is open to world participants.
I competed and went to create my Cabrillo file and got that message.
So of I went with my ADIF and imported it into N1MM and sent it off.
Not being the quickest but having a good understanding, it still took me best part of a day to do all this.
Is there a simple way to add user templates to the Cabrillo creator or if supplied with the appropriate UDF files for N1MM, have them included in the contest listing.

+ No. Cabrillo is far too complex for that.

I was exclusively DX Labs Suite until I had to do this.

Another possibility to add an Access Database where these can be user added.

+ Same answer.
