Re: Config panel of DXKeeper

Hi Pete!

I couldn't find where you turn sections on and off in config. It is a set of checkboxes on the Log QSO's tab. I wish I could send you a screenshot - I have my sections oriented vertically so the section checkboxes are to the right of the "QSO" box. Checking/unchecking is remembered for me.

Re: Accessing Log on two computers - unexpected behavior

I’m not a database guy, but know it’s possible to have many users on one database and everyone gets updated. (Think Google docs, contest logging, to minimize dupes.)

That would apply to all apps/players on the field. Yeah it could add a lot of network time to keep everyone current. If all of the ops running a station were not on the LAN; it could be slow going.

So I agree, but I don’t care how it gets done, so one can have more than one active station node and everything gets updates in real time.

One method I have seen/used, is FDLog (contest-ware) where each node, has the COMPLETE log and updates happen near instantly (TCP/IP), which works but seems overkill too.

Subject: [DXLab] Accessing Log on two computers - unexpected behavior
Yesterday I tried to access my log on a laptop at one of my other radios. I installed only Launcher and DXKeeper, and pointed it to my log in OneDrive. Before I started DXKeeper on the laptop I shut it down on the desktop.
DXKeeper started fine, found my log, opened it, everything appeared normal. I made two QSOs and logged them. Then I shut down DXKeeper on the laptop and moved over to the main position, where I opened DXKeeper on the desktop. The two laptop QSOs were not in the log.
This morning I logged a few QSOs on the desktop, then shut down DXKeeper and moved to the laptop. I started DXKeeper on the laptop and the morning desktop QSOs were not in that log.
I shut down the laptop DXKeeper, went back to the desktop, started the desktop DXKeeper and again it only had the desktop QSOs on it. I closed the desktop DXKeeper.
I opened the OneDrive from the system tray and saw it was still uploading after several minutes. Knowing the SpotCollector also refers to the log, I then closed SpotCollector on the desktop - it was not installed on the laptop, I had been using the webserver to look at spots from the desktop on the laptop.
Closing SpotCollector allowed the log to sync in OneDrive but it complained that there were now two versions of the file.
I've exported the two laptop QSOs into the desktop log, so my log is correct. No worries there. I did read the wiki on using two PCs, and it only mentioned being sure to only have one instance of DXKeeper active at a time. Is there a similar need to only have one instance of SpotCollector running as well?
Are there any other best practices for accessing my log via multiple computers? My shack has three operating positions and one of them is far enough away from the screen, keyboard and mouse that I had been using remote desktop software to log but rendering the desktops big screen on my laptop is hard on the eyes. Running DXKeeper alone would be a better way to log from that position.

I use ONE drive for my log file for DXLABS, but you have to make sure ALL dxlabs are shutdown on one computer before starting up DXLabs on another computer, and give ONEDrive time to finish syncing the files.
? I have about 4 computers that I use DXLabs on, you just have to be sure the syncing is done before starting DXLabs.
Right now I'm using DXLabs on a laptop out in CA, but use the same log that is on the home computer, has worked fine for years, with a few hic-ups when I forgot to shut down one DXLabs before starting another.?

Perhaps you want to set up a NAS (I use Synology) on your station/home network.? It can be your personal cloud server while you're away and accessed on your LAN.? In that way, your log is correctly updated.? (As well as other significant uses, like backing up other computers/drives etc.)

It means that your files are under your control and far less likely to be snooped on (Amazon, Google, Apple, MS etc) if personal security is on your mind.? It is more self reliant, not trusting some corporation to decide what is proper for you.

Then all you have to ensure is that the transmitter location is logged correctly if not the home station (are you local or operating remotely, or as DX under your call, modified?).

I have three operating positions at home, using precisely the same logbook file.? I only use one node at a time, so far so there is no software conflict.? Should I operate not remotely but away; I can access the NAS remotely or incorporate the new log entries later (an option, if I'm not on the internet).? That change takes but moments in the config on the disconnected node.

It presumes also that your home (and remote) internet access stays up 24/7/365 (most do).

That's where I'm evolving to now; leaving the backup files on the station node in use (the shack computer, laptop, desktop, whatever).? Reading through the documentation should help advise you.

I also back up the NAS on rotating drives, each stored off site but easily reached (suspenders for the belt).? As I live in a wildfire zone, grabbing that external backup drive is part of the escape plan, if needed along with my go bag etc.

WIRE the NAS to the router, not wifi (slower by a factor of 10 or more).

There are simple solutions to a NAS depending on your needs, I went with a 4 drive, 10 TB hot switchable (and have a spare drive on hand, total cost $1500).? A NAS may also be other servers for your use (pop/smtp, web, ftp etc) without having to muck with Windoze or Mac 'stuff'.? To the OS, it's just another drive.

There is a small learning curve in finding the right NAS solution for you and some setup (which RAID or proprietary format?).

Keeping the log local means in the future I can just run what I need locally - rig software, log, some kind of cluster.??

I can access the log on the home server side by using remote desktop software but the result is a big shack screen rendered on a small laptop screen.? Difficult to work with, and full of nice to have but not critical parts.

Re: Accessing Log on two computers - unexpected behavior

The problem isn't real-time syncing - the OP isn't trying to do that - rather, the problem is OneDrive (and other sync-ing mechanisms) need to lock the file to read it without corrupting it. Databases like the one DXLab depends on don't like that.

Knowing the SpotCollector also refers to the log, I then closed SpotCollector on the desktop - it was not installed on the laptop, I had been using the webserver to look at spots from the desktop on the laptop.? ?

Closing SpotCollector allowed the log to sync in OneDrive but it complained that there were now two versions of the file.??

I've exported the two laptop QSOs into the desktop log, so my log is correct.? No worries there.? I did read the wiki on using two PCs, and it only mentioned being sure to only have one instance of DXKeeper active at a time.? Is there a similar need to only have one instance of SpotCollector running as well?

Are there any other best practices for accessing my log via multiple computers?? My shack has three operating positions and one of them is far enough away from the screen, keyboard and mouse that I had been using remote desktop software to log but rendering the desktops big screen on my laptop is hard on the eyes.? Running DXKeeper alone would be a better way to log from that position.??

Re: Accessing Log on two computers - unexpected behavior

My hope is to be able to have it available in a remote environment in the future.? That would allow me to remotely control my radio and have log access at a remote site.? That would require a cloud-based log file somehow.??

I may try keeping the working database on the shack desktop and share that directory via DDNS.? That's my next experiment.

One drive may not be the best place to have your "operational" log
it is an ok place to keep a backup.

With what it appears you want to do, it would be better utilizing a local network drive for the log.

Re: FFMA report

The sorting with Excel is exactly what I want! Instead of several hundred line items to go through I have about 30!

The other was just -- dreaming, I guess.

Thanks, Dave!

Is there any way to change the sort order in the FFMA report?

+ Not by using DXKeeper. You could open the FFMA report with EXCEL (use the "fixed width" option), and then sort it as desired.

I'd like to have it in reverse DATE order so I could update the new grids I have worked since updating the FFMA spreadsheet.

Come to think of it, it might be helpful if I had the option of showing the grids I haven't worked in the FFMA report, too.

+ Keeping track of unworked/worked/confirmed grids for the FFMA award is tantamount to providing realtime award tracking - a significant development effort not justified by the relatively low level of interest in this award expressed here.
