Repeater Owners - Wireless Internet

If you need Internet at a site that doesn't have it.? T-Mobile has a plan now that is 30GB for $10/mo. (w/autopay or $15/mo. without autopay).? It is not advertised on their site, so you either have to go to a store or call their customer service to sign up.

I just learned about it yesterday and today I went to a local T-Mobile store and got a SIM, it cost $39 to activate the line.? For autopay you need a Debit Card (not Credit Card) or bank account debit. I activated it on my LTE router at the Kingston WA D-STAR site, it came right up. I had previously been using an IOT SIM which worked, but was not as hearty as I wanted. The Kingston site will be getting additional repeaters in the coming months, so the added bandwidth/reliability is welcome.

A friend reported that if you do the online chat/phone they wave the activation charge. YMMV, but I wanted to pick up the SIM anyway.

It is called "Basic Mobile Internet 30GB (TE)" if the agent isn't familiar with it.

I use the??at a couple of sites with good results.

So.

i got this service for a new repeater install. Apparently using this service with dynamic IP won't work with G3 Software.?

T-Mobile will not give you a static IP unless you have an EIN.

Brian,

Getting an EIN is not very difficult. I did it for my farm a year or so ago.

I am researching a VPN solution. If I go to static, it will raise the price from the good price of 10 bucks

We have explored the LTE route and have it working, without a static IP, only through a raspberry pi with the ICOM repeaters. Cellular companies have?carrier grade NAT?in place on their network so the port forwarding won't work without a static IP. We even tried a site 2 site VPN. The server port forward test would pass however the server would not sync with the trust server.

I know Terry has it working on some FirstNet Static IPs with G3 but the cost for a static IP is usually a bit higher.

We have three sites on the air now with LTE and a ICOM repeater 2nd and 3rd gen paired with a raspberry pi running Pi-Star.

I am on the phone with FirstNet right now...3 hours....no one i have talked to knows how to do it.

See this short video:??

I and others have used this solution with both Icom and homebrew repeaters and gateways.? Using it to defeat CGNAT on both wired and LTE networks and providing static/routable IP.

A fairly busy repeater (due to link up to REF035 C full time) uses about 4 GB/month.?

See examples (homebrew) -- Icom 3rd Generation on G3 is at -- and a stack (on the bench to replace NW7DR) at -- if you do an nslookup/dig on those domain names you will see they are all on 44Net.

If you have an LTE enabled router, here is something you may want to check out:

This plan is somewhat "secret" as it's not listed on their website - but T-Mobile reps can look it up by referencing the SOC of MI30TI (which is for the tax inclusive version of the plan, MI30TE is for tax exclusive). It's available ala carte, without need of any other lines of service. The plan is available for both consumer and business accounts, and available tax inclusive and exclusive.

If your local store can't figure it out call T-Mobile customer service.

These LTE routers are known to work the Wireguard based VPN well over 4G LTE with the built-in Wireguard client.

Collie - GL-X300B (Good for remote sites and has multiple antennas)

Puli - GL-XE300 (Built-in Battery Backup)

Each of these routers are around $100 and can be purchased online at Amazon and Walmart.

A good amount of testing has been done on both GL-Inet and Mikrotik routers.

If you want to set up your own Wireguard server in a data center it is fairly inexpensive (<$20/mo.) at places like VULTR and Spartan Host and can support dozens of clients/sites.? Getting a /24 to go with your server on 44Net can be applied for (at no cost) at - but wait until next week while some maintenance/updates are being done this week.??

The VPN service directly from ARDC is still in testing but would be good for a single site.

Hi Brian,

The items I listed will work with G2/G3 or other gateway software.? What I am using on nw7dr and kf7ufz is a refactoring of the G4KLX's ircddbgateway (which is what is used in Pi-Star and WPSD for D-STAR). It is ?by F4FXL.? On K7GKR it is a G3 gateway.? You can run the VPN directly on the gateway host, or on a router.? On K7GKR it is setup configured like you would do on any G3 install:

3rd Gen Icom Repeater <- 172,16.0.1 | 172.16.0.20 --> G3 Gateway on Centos 7 <-- 10.0.0.2 | 10.0.0.1 --> GL-Inet Router (wireguard client bringing address) === Tunnel over wired Internet in building === Internet.

Does proton give you fixed/static routable IP?

This is one of the best routers I have ever used.? We punch through cellular firewalls (inside > out) at several repeater sites.? It has ZeroTier, Wireguard (client & server), OpenVPN (client & server) and much more.? So good you just won't believe it.? Using ZeroTier, we can remotely control the router as well.

Gary,

Yes, pretty much all of the GL-Inet routers have these capabilities, the ones I gave as examples are LTE capable as many repeater sites don't have available Internet.
