I have spent some more time on this project since I last posted. The audio hum I mentioned before seems to have resolved itself?
as it is no longer noticeable. I guess the caps just needed more time to come back to life.? ?Power output is 100 watts on 80-10.? . Completely re-tubed, including finals, in 2016, have invoice from RF Parts, will share.?
Not many hours since. Underside of chassis looks shiny and bright, like new. Top side has a few of the blotches.
?$200 plus ship. PayPal F&F, Venmo OK. More pix available. Ships from Missoula, MT 59801. I also have an AC-4 and MS-4 which I will post on another message . If you think my price is not reasonable, I am open to suggestions. See other messages in this thread for more pix. Tom Hellem, K0SN? tel. 406-two four zero-five four two eight tom.hellem@... |
开云体育Tom, can you post two more images, please?? One with the unit on, so we can the dial illumination, and one rear view of the radio. ? BTW, Nice sales presentation. ? Thank you. ? Joe – W7RKN From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Tom Hellem ? Works on both TX and RX, but not 100%. Needs some adjusting and some new caps in the RX as there is some hum. ?Output is normal on some bands and low on others. Tom, that is certainly enough information.? Cheers! -- Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Fruit flies like a banana.

开云体育100 watts is not right.Every TR-4 I have ever had and used has made close to 200 watts CW OUT. some even a bit more. 100 watts and something isn't right. Joe WB9SBD On 11/30/2023 1:50 PM, Tom Hellem

I will qualify that. 200W, on 40 & 80, into a dummy load. 180W on 20 150+ on 15 & 10. Yes, 100W is low, especially with replaced tubes -- though 8 years is enough time to wear them out if proper precautions aren't taken. The primary destroyer of the final tubes is driving the carp out of them all the time.? Abide by the manual's maximum plate (cathode) current recommendations, which are 300W PEP ? INPUT** on SSB and 260W INPUT?? on CW.? Given that the amp is biased AB1, assume 60% efficiency.? 260 * .6 = 156 W output. Of course, nearly everyone runs more than that but that's what the official recommendation from Drake is and wouldn't change due to the 1kW input max vs 1500W output max that changed 40+ years ago. I was trying for a G rating.

Pushing the output from 150W to 200W is less than 2dB but can exceed tube ratings (17.5W per tube, so 52.5W per trio)/.6 = 87.5W, continuous. So running 200+W out is likely exceeding the ratings for this tube -- even when allowing for low duty cycle. I like to keep mine at 150 - 170W. If I need more "oomph", I have amps for that. About 400 mA or so is good. YMMV, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Fruit flies like a banana. Sent with Proton Mail secure email. well keep in mind that the tubes were designed as horizontal output tubes for TV sets.? That is continuous operation.? What kills them is when you exceed what the ratings are and what the manual tells you.? Easy to do.? The few extra watts may satisfy?the mind, but does nothing at the far?end. Sweeps were designed for pulse operation. Low average, very high peak power. That's why they can be run so hard with CW or unprocessed SSB.

Of course, our lives went on past the life of RS.

I still encounter the occasional RS Lifetime tube. They have gold-plated pins and I have yet to find a dud from them. 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Fruit flies like a banana.
