well...this is how my re-introduction to the hobby is going after 35 years off the air. i thought i would enjoy using technology to log my qso's and qsl's. QRZ.com has already ruined that. despite the fact that i inputted all of my current and correct information into their system, and despite the fact that my license contains all the correct and current information, they somehow "buried" the grid square of my?prior address in a log book settings screen that doesn't come up when you are registering, or make itself apparent afterwards. so, now that i have paid to upgrade my membership so i can download the log and upload it to eQSL, everything bounced because the grid square in the contacts doesn't agree with the one in my profile.
QRZ.com is refusing to do anything about it, claiming it is my responsibility to keep my information up to date. they make a big deal of "standing behind their product" if it fails to work. well...guess what? i have no idea how they got my old grid square, but it is not my fault or my problem. i told them i don't care if they have to edit each of my contacts individually, they are going to do it. and i was having so much fun...

i knew if i complained something good would happen and it did. i found an .adif editor and fixed the problem as well as uncovering another. QRZ.com doesn’t create your county name in a format that eQSL likes (they include the two-letter state abbreviation followed by a comma and then the county name – how stupid). so, i will always have to edit the county column and the first 145 entries in the grid square column. ? at least i figured it out...sorry for the tirade, folks... ? joseph n. graif k4jng ?

There are many logging programs out there.? You will need to assess your wants as to what the program will do for you. For me, I wanted to have a log of all qsos and be able to keep track of my various calls from the novice days till now.? This includes the DXpeditions?and?IOTA adventures.? I use a program called Logic.? It works well for me and there is a good and timely backup in case you need help.? I have used it for about 30 years.? There are others that can do the same.? If you have the time you can download a sample program, put your ADIF info in it and see if this is what you want.
One of the features I wanted was a stout CW engine so I could do keyboard CW qsos.? The best one for this is N1MM, but it is a contest program with little in the way of record keeping.? So, I use logic.? There are many others.
Good Luck and again, welcome back!

I really don't consider QRZ to be a "real" log. I have been using N3FJP AClog as my station log for well over a decade. It is not free but it really is true that in both the cases of QRZ and AClog you do get what you pay for. I was an early adopter of eQSL more for the card images than anything else, and later LoTW for ARRL awards. But IMO your main station log should always be a program that resides on your own computer(s). You can use it as you like and you can also ensure that you have a good backup strategy without having to rely on someone else to do it. 73 -Jim NU0C On Sat, 25 Jun 2022 20:11:39 -0400 "Joseph Nicholas Graif - K4JNG" <jgraif1@...> wrote: and now, QRZ.com has closed my account because i complained. it’s a good thing i have that .adif file. those bastards...

I'll cast a vote for Logger32. I installed Zakanaka (it's early incarnation) in? about 1999 and 11,000+ QSO's later it's still going strong.? There's a fair learning curve, but works really nicely .

I have been using DXBase since 1999. Although no longer
supported except on the DXBase Forum, it is now available
for free.
In the years since the original owner retired, I have searched
for a replacement. To date, I have found nothing out there
that I would choose over DXBase.

many, many thanks to jim, john and dick for the kind advice. now, i can enjoy this hot summer afternoon indoors checking out three possibilities for my “new” log and listening to field day.... ? i realize there are alternatives. it’s just that i am new to electronic logging after 35 years off the air. i was just getting comfortable with QRZ.com and enjoyed putting together my little home page. i subscribed so i could move contacts over to eQSL. then, to be offered no help and told (in so many words) that whatever my issue, it was my fault and then have it all ripped away without warning, including the free account (i mean, who does that? well...KG7MAK, that’s who) was just plain hurtful. he probably destroyed all my data in the process. what an infantile and vindictive way to act. ? ?

And that is the polar opposite of the treatment that you get from N3FJP (Scott). The software is a family affair in the N3FJP household. well...this is how my re-introduction to the hobby is going after 35 years off the air. i thought i would enjoy using technology to log my qso's and qsl's. I have been using DXBase since 1999. Although no longer
supported except on the DXBase Forum, it is now available
for free.
In the years since the original owner retired, I have searched
for a replacement. To date, I have found nothing out there
that I would choose over DXBase.

I'll cast a vote for Logger32. I installed Zakanaka (it's early incarnation) in about 1999 and 11,000+ QSO's later it's still going strong. There's a fair learning curve, but works really nicely .

You can use it as you like and you can also ensure that you have a good backup strategy without having to rely on someone else to do it.

i knew if i complained something good would happen and it did. i found an .adif editor and fixed the problem as well as uncovering another. QRZ.com doesn't create your county name in a format that eQSL likes (they include the two-letter state abbreviation followed by a comma and then the county name - how stupid). so, i will always have to edit the county column and the first 145 entries in the grid square column.
at least i figured it out...sorry for the tirade, folks...

Subject: [DRAKE-RADIO] QRZ.com
well...this is how my re-introduction to the hobby is going after 35 years off the air. i thought i would enjoy using technology to log my qso's and qsl's. QRZ.com has already ruined that. despite the fact that i inputted all of my current and correct information into their system, and despite the fact that my license contains all the correct and current information, they somehow "buried" the grid square of my prior address in a log book settings screen that doesn't come up when you are registering, or make itself apparent afterwards. so, now that i have paid to upgrade my membership so i can download the log and upload it to eQSL, everything bounced because the grid square in the contacts doesn't agree with the one in my profile. QRZ.com is refusing to do anything about it, claiming it is my responsibility to keep my information up to date. they make a big deal of "standing behind their product" if it fails to work. well...guess what? i have no idea how they got my old grid square, but it is not my fault or my problem. i told them i don't care if they have to edit each of my contacts individually, they are going to do it. and i was
having so much fun...

Joseph,
Really glad to hear that you found hams to help you sort out the logging stuff. I recently (within the past 2 years) got back into HF after a 30 year hiatus. I too had to learn all the digital stuff and bring my logs into the 21st century. I sync my log with QRZ.com and use QRZ.com to sync with LoTW. QRZ.com does a good job of removing dupes, which keeps my LoTW clean.
I am using CQRLOG at the moment. My shack computer was running Linux, but recently switched to Windows 11. I run CQRLOG in WSL.
If you need any help with your transition into the digital ham radio world, please feel free to reach out.

I haven't dealt with QRZ except I think I logged into it once to add something to a JA's logbook.? I, like you, took a 30 year hiatus from the radio and am back in the swing of things now.? I looked around and will say that I like N3FJP's logging program.? It's not perfect, but it beats writing my own which is what I did back in the late 70's.? And it's got a lot more functions than my old program (and it doesn't require a Commodore PET computer to run!)
The guys here on the Drake group are great for information, too.? I've asked several questions and have always gotten good answers, even when it wasn't about Drakes.? My entire station was bought in the late 70's and it is still running good (Drake & Dentron, can't beat 'em).? They work the "new" digital modes just fine, too.
Thought I'd add my 2 cents worth.?? Cya later & 73.
