Mic for Drake TR7
Hi all,
I have a TR7 i just received, but no microphone to go with it. My question is: what mic would be good to purchase for use with the TR7?
A Shure 444d desk mic has been suggested, and there are plenty available, but what hand mic would be equivalent ? Is there a Shure hand mic model that I should look for??
If you have one for sale, please contact me, my info on QRZ is good.
Thanks for your response and suggestions in advance.

Robert

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe equivalent hand mic for the Shure 444 is the 404C (Hi imp) or the 404B (low imp) either works very well with the TR-7 Bill KE7KK |

There is a CB style mic that Drake used with their 470 that has an excellent cartridge that sounds great on my TR-7A. ?I'll. dig up the model number if you like. 73, Evan, K9SQG

I have a NIB Shure 450 mic with selectable impedances. ?I'm using one with my TR-7A and getting good reports. ?Not bringing it to Hamvention for several reasons, hihi. 73, Evan, K9SQG

Thanks Bill, that helps a lot. I wasn't sure if it needed a high imp or a low imp? You say either works well with the TR7? Which imp were the original Drake mics? Thanks so much, Robert

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Evan,Thanks for responding, how much are you asking for it, shipped to Ohio? Can you send some photos to my email: robertgromen@... Thanks, Robert WD8PAQ

Robert, I also have a NIB, last production run of a D-104 that is an amplified version, in the display case. ?It is actually better than new if you'd ever want to know the story. 73, Evan

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Evan,Don¡¯t worry about the photos, I since found out that¡¯s not the correct microphone I need, so I¡¯m no longer interested in it. As far as the D-104 goes, they are amplified which will blow my audio input on the radio, can¡¯t use an amplified mic on it. Thanks anyway, 73, Robert

Robert, The amplified D-104 Final Edition works fine with the TR-7 by merely bypassing the audio amp. ?It is more of a collector's item in the display case. Have a good week. 73, Evan

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHEY ALL ? A lil nostalgia history of the d104 and its amp¡¯d bases used in them CB days.. ? T-UG8: Came with a 4-wire cord. The audio wire is NOT disconnected from the mike on receive. This causes a weird, loud squeal on RECEIVE side from some older AM-only radios. The straight mikes that came with those radios all had a switch section inside them that UNHOOKED the audio wire from the mike on receive. The T-UG8 has only a two-section switch inside it, mounted INSIDE the mast. One side keys the radio, and provides the receive-side connection. The other section turns the battery off when you unkey. No easy way to cut the audio wire loose from the audio amp in the mike for receive side. ? ENJOY ? STAY SAFE AND STAY WELL! ? Respectfully, NJ DOH Licensed EMT;? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWhen Astatic came out with the D-104s, they were made for the CB market. Back then most CBr¡¯s were on AM not SSB, so the mic works great on AM or FM,Then Astatic came out with the 10d mic (bullet shaped) which was targeted for the SSBr¡¯s. I had one, used it on my Drake TR7 back in the 80¡¯s and following that on my Ten-Tecs, into the 90¡¯s. Worked extremely well on SSB, better than the D-104s from audio reports. I¡¯m going to look for a Shure 404b or 404c mic. Thanks to all.

The D-104 with the G stand was? made for? hams back in the 1930's . CB was about 20 yeas later, I am thinking 1958.? CB did not take off to the 1960's to become popular.? ?They produced the amplified version in the 60's probably to match the solid state transmitters. Ralph ku4pt

HEY ALL ? A lil nostalgia history of the d104 and its amp¡¯d bases used in them CB days.. ? T-UG8: Came with a 4-wire cord. The audio wire is NOT disconnected from the mike on receive. This causes a weird, loud squeal on RECEIVE side from some older AM-only radios. The T-UG8 has only a two-section switch inside it, mounted INSIDE the mast. One side keys the radio, and provides the receive-side connection. The other section turns the battery off when you unkey. No easy way to cut the audio wire loose from the audio amp in the mike for receive side. T-UG9: Came with a six-wire cord. No radio made since 1980 used more than 5 of them. Go figure. That sixth wire was there for just one brand of radio: Johnson. They used all six wires, but went out of the CB radio business soon after the T-UG9 hit the market. The BIG difference is that the "9" has THREE switch sections inside it. The switch itself is mounted down inside the base, not inside the mast. Most of them will have a "press bar" in addition to the "choker" handle. This one will work with the old 4-pin AM radios without the receive-side squall sounds. That's because that THIRD switch section is attached to the audio wire. The stock setup in the mike is to ground the white audio wire on receive. Clipping one ground wire inside the base makes it compatible with those old "4-pin" radios. Besides, they quit making the "8" a long time ago. The "9" is a newer model, and a used one is probably newer than any "8". ? ENJOY ? STAY SAFE AND STAY WELL! ? Respectfully, Thomas K. Lanieri, NU2W NJ DOH Licensed EMT;?
