C Line 100¡¯s Frequency Disc

This R-4C I¡¯ve been working on continues to challenge me. I removed the PTO to replace the pretty horribly-scratched and stained frequency discs and neither of them are going to fit without me doing some drilling.?

Worse, though, is that the 100¡¯s disc has tick marks all around the edge ¡ª like the 10¡¯s disc.?

Was there ever any Drake PTO from the period that had this? ?I¡¯m guessing that these discs were made for the owner by someone not familiar with the Drake dials.?

See the pic.?

Steve:

I checked my file of PTO teardowns for all 4 types of Drake C-line dials and did not see a 100's dial like this one.

On a hunch I checked Radio Daze, knowing they supply Drake replacement dials.? Take a look here....

Mystery solved!

Thanks, Peter. That solves the mystery and tells me that there aren¡¯t any alternatives from them.?

Well, this is another fine mess I¡¯ve gotten myself into¡

I need to wait for a reply from the owner. The alternative is to either try and polish-up the existing ?100¡¯s disc or try and remove the markings ¡ª which could disfigure the new disc. The dial is a big deal for him, I know.?

The rig, itself, is already a disaster.?

Steve:

Putting those "Khz lines" on the 100's dial is a serious error in my opinion.? I can't imagine how awful that would look with two sets of spinning lines!? Might be worth letting Radio?Daze know of their error.

Think that trying to remove them is going to leave that dial looking pretty ugly too.

On the holes in the plastic dial......I believe the early "no lever" PTO had two holes for the brass rivets, and the two lever PTO, starting at around 21,000 serial # in the R-4C, had three. The last version of the PTO with metal anti-backlash gears had the three holes for the rivets, but no rivets were used.? At least that's what I make of them from what I have observed and photographed so far.

I have a TR7 PTO with a pretty trashed disk. Somebody apparently tried
to "clean" it with a powerful solvent, which penetrated between the plastic
and I guess the outer stencil ( with the lines ) and turned the plastic a
blotchy, milky white.

If you want to get their attention maybe click the review button and give them a 1 star review explaining how they got it so wrong. Really, what were they thinking? Even someone who has never seen a Drake should be able to see what's wrong with that picture...

Yeah, I¡¯m thinking that the disc won¡¯t be usable. The old?100¡¯s disc isn¡¯t as bad as the 10¡¯s. Going to try using Novus on the 100¡¯s disc and try staying away from the numerals.?

I¡¯m going to see if someone at RD could see to it to correct the main problem.?

I have a Dremel and very small drill bits. I can probably take care of the rivet?holes.?

Yeah, I made the 10¡¯s disc get a milky spot and lose some of the ink by using an ultrasonic cleaner and regular soap. It was trash, anyway, and I can use the new one with a little drilling.?

Folks, don¡¯t use an ultrasonic cleaner on these discs! (Also, if you ultrasound the knobs, you¡¯ll need to redo the white paint!). The gears came out spiffy, though?
