Drake R-4B Issues; Part V

This has been a great learning process and a lot of fun.

What I now believe the issue of crazy S-Meter readings is due to the
frequency of the Second LO Crystal (5,595 KHz) being off frequency.

In the Alignment Procedure (para. 6.4.5) it calls for zero beating with
C61. In my case, C61 (1-8 pf) had little or no effect. I added 24 pf cap
across C61 and saw a dramatic decrease in tone frequency. I changed
out the 24 pf for a 50 pf and saw the tone frequency drop further.

I also saw a corresponding increase in S-Meter reading. So my guess is,
the Crystal being off-frequency shifts the resultant signal in the passband
enough to cause the S-Meter to read wrong.

However, there's just so much C you can add before the Oscillator stops.

So, what I need to find is an organ donor R-4 and either just get the
Crystal, or get the whole board.

Any donors out there ??

Have you tried to see if Quartslab or AF4K have any available?

It's not an alignment by a frequency number by itself, but for a match in beat frequency.

Last week when I measured T7, I also took a frequency measurement at V3 cathode, with a 10x probe (slight pull the frequency, just barely) and 60 MHz oscilloscope with frequency meter. It measured 5594 KHz.
Just my R-4B

Quartslab quoted me around $45-$50 shipped for it (exchange rate fluctuations move it around). Bomar was even worse, $50 plus shipping and a $100 minimum order (before shipping).

Another member of this list told me to try changing C62 to a 5.6pf, it's currently 12pf. It's a disc cap but all I had handy was a 4pf SM so I used that. Brought it real close and C61 was able to finish the job.

C62 is on that little board, easy to get to. It's connected between pins 1 and 2 on V3.
