6BN8/8BN8

OK question. Can a 6BN8 be used in a 2B in place of a 8BN8 and if so what if any differences will occur?

Has anyone tried this?

Thanks Tim

The short answer is "no". Unless you like hum in the audio. Longer answer is here:

Well, it seems to me to make sense to put in the resistor that Hallicrafters used since 6BN8 tubes are far more common than the 8BN8. In fact, I have half a dozen of 6BN8 tubes and zero 8BN8 tubes.

I suppose that the 8BN8 would more likely be found in the television repair man's caddy. There are quite a few on eBay right now.

The 8-volt version costs quite a bit more than the 6-volt equivalent. ?As it was a one-and-done replacement for my personal 2-B, I didn¡¯t mind paying the difference. ?

If you do want to save, you can insert a series resistor.

BTW, I didn¡¯t really notice any hum with the 6BN8 in there, so it may not have been applicable to every radio.

I don't think you would have any problem with making the swap. If all the filaments are in series, the 2 volt difference would be spread over the entire string. The thing to check would be the filament current between the two as they could be significantly different.
