TR-7 PBT Restored

Finally repaired my original TR-7 PBT board that I roasted the U1001 analog switch on. (Dieter was right!) Took about a month to get the IC via eBay/Asia.?
?
Unsoldering that dude took about two hours to get all the little pins out after I surrendered and used the "Wedge" method of chopping it out and unsoldering the pins afterward. Still pretty rough on the circuit traces. Because of this I dug through the junk box and put in a 14 pin DIP socket instead of directly soldering the IC in.?
?
I was very surprised that it came right up after I set the 13.695 VXCO. Boom. Not sure if there is a sweeter-sounding receiver when everything's dialed in.?
?
Next up: 1) The "better all-band transmit mod", 2) grounding mod to eliminate 40m parasitic, and 3) Cinch-Jones plug and fan mod to remove 120V from unit.?
?
Tip of the cap to you guys for helping me keep this relic on the air.?

Good job. There is no need to socket any IC's in the radio. They reduce reliability. The original old technology chips lasted 45 years.? Jim WA9Z

Congratulations Craig!! Glad my hint led you into the right direction!

Like Jim said, they ARE repairable. In fact, there is very little in a TR7 that cannot be repaired. (Some effects can drive you nuts, though!!)

My TR7 has been without mains inside for ages now. Maybe because the European 50 Hz makes an even more annoying hum in the receiver. And it saves the switch in the pot, too! Good luck with your further work.

Craig,
?
Interesting that you had trouble with that particular IC. So did I, on my low-SN TR-7.
?
I replaced with a CD4066, as that's what I had to hand. The 4066 is a somewhat improved version of the 4016, as I recall. I put the replacement on a socket, just in case I ever have to go there again;-)

Hi Mark, the IC was fine, it was ME that plugged in the small PS board one pin off...and roasted the IC that way. I would never have guessed/found that issue had Dieter not owned up to doing the same before me. I used the IC socket as well, as the board traces would probably not survive another unsoldering/replacement cycle.?
