Hi Ralph,

?

This isn¡¯t two rigs, but one receiver and one transmitter that can be operated as separates or transceive off of either VFO.

?

With this much gain discrepancy between 80m and 15 meters there is a problem, likely alignment.? There could be some variation in the different band crystal output level, but I doubt it.? For certain the AGC threshold is all over the map.? A 1 microvolt signal (-107 dBm) should read S3 on all bands 80 ¨C 10 meters.? With those S meter readings there is no chance the S meter will read S3 at -107 dBm on all bands.

?

With low gain on 80 and 40m reception may not be drastically affected since band noise is so much higher on the low bands.? The bottom line is Skip asked if this was the way the R-4C should operate and it is not operating anywhere near spec.

People would be better off if they scraped the numbers off the old rigs s-meters.

?

As you have a calibrated generator you probably have a meter you can put across the speaker.? Send in a low level signal in the two rigs and see if you can hear or measure the audio at the speaker and see if the two? rigs seem to hear the weak signal equally.? This will tell you if the low s-meter indicates a problem or just a low meter reading.

Re: TR7/R7 Extender Boards and Puller

Yeah,

The spacing on the Drake extractor seem to be a bit short.? Seems like
it was designed to lift one end of the board, then finish extracting the
board with the hole on the other end of the board.

Re: TR7 Extender Boards for sale. And a bad DR7 board, maybe.

Oops. Missed one. RIT centering also requires the Jumper Board if you have a very early Parent Board. Later boards have a bottom access hole in the Parent.

Re: T4XC AGC

I looked this situation with my early T-4X.? It had the 1meg resistor.

Looking at the AGC out on pin 3 of the CInch-Jones, I see good AGC action, the louder you scream into the mic, the more negative the AGC voltage.
It is a slow AGC, it doesn't follow speech syllables, its not meant to be a speech compressor.? I do see a lot of carrier oscillator signal on the AGC line,
not sure that is good...?

I didn't have a 15K handy so I put a 20K across the 1meg.? It still shows AGC negative voltage with loud voice, but not as much.? So it reduced the AGC but
AGC did work in both cases.? WIth less the 15K the meter will go higher but that probably means that the finals are being driven too much which will cause them
to go non-linear, NOT what you want.

So I say this myth is BUSTED, I am leaving it at 1meg like the engineers at Drake designed.? NOTE too, my T-4XB still has 1meg so Frank isn't totally correct
that it was fixed in later models.? Maybe it fixes his 6146 mod?

Re: Drake T4XC and R4C

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

The R-4C is not S9 with a -73 dBm test signal.? -80 dBm to even -85 dBm is more typical for S9 from 80m through 10m.?? 160m is typically 10 dB lower in gain.? (That doesn¡¯t matter at all due to 160m band noise.)

?

If in transceive mode, the T-4XC LO injection is another variable as your data appears to show.? None of the Drake mixers are near saturation, thus gain differences are typical in transceive mode due to LO level differences.?

?

As a starting point consider the attached alignment tips.? (You can ignore the FPS-4 information.)

I was enjoying some casual time with putting my Collins receiver back together and decided to try getting the crystals better looking than the greenish-brown that they were. I¡¯ve seen Drake crystals that sometimes look this bad and decided to try an old standby: Bar Keeper¡¯s Friend.?

It took very little effort to make these crystals look like they did in 1964.?

Bonus: BKF seems to help with old, dull knobs, too. I¡¯ve been using a handi-wipe but could see getting this loaded into a Dremel buffing pad.?
