Re: R4C rough tuning
I agree with everything Peter has listed except that I use mineral spirits for the ball bearings and their race.? I will add that you won¡¯t get the PTO to be as light and smooth as the earlier designs but you can come close ¡ª especially with the ¡°metal gears¡± version (there are still one or two nylon gears in a ¡°metal gears¡± PTO).? Be very careful to put any nylon washers back where they originally were. The locations and thicknesses of these washers can vary ¡ª they were used to fine-tune the geartrain.? 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. Re: R4C rough tuning
Jay; There are many reasons that can contribute to "grabbing" or "sticky" tuning on the C-line dials.? Often there can be more than one reason.? Full teardown is always my choice but I understand that can be?a daunting task to face for the 1st time.?? Before doing that I would recommend?reading and studying two articles. Both are on WB4HFN's website. The first is by Neil, K1VY; The 2nd is by me, and can be found here; It starts on Page 15. If pulling the PTO seems a bit much, you could try cleaning out the front bearing with long Q-tips and rubbing alcohol.? You will need at least a half?dozen swabs to get it clean.? Once clean, re-lube with a light grease.? I prefer copper infused moly grease these days, but have used white lithium in the past.? Both work well for me.? Unfortunately?one often finds burrs on the 1/4" steel PTO shaft, or on the brass busing it slides into, as well as old stiff grease on the PTO gears. Full disassembly is required to address these issues. I cannot stress enough to take a picture at EVERY step of the removal process.? You won't regret it afterwards.? There are four different mechanical styles I have documented produced during the C-line run....and despite having disassembled at least 30 of those now, I can still get easily confused when trying to get them back together again. Pictures?REALLY help! Good luck! 73 Peter VE7PS On Wed, Dec 18, 2024 at 7:11?PM Evan via <k9sqg=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: R4C rough tuning
My guess is that the vernier drive has a lubricant that has hardened over the years. ? Same could be true of the PTO screw. ?Let's hear what the experts say...

Group,
In an R4C the PTO is electronically stable but that 'silky smooth' tuning is not happening.? It takes extra force to tune the PTO (as compared to my T4XC) and feels like something grabbing or resisting. Without pulling all of the gears apart, where should I start looking for what's grabbing? Re: Twins PTO. Compatability
The Twins are all interchangeable ¡ª except for the R-4, which uses a 6AU6 mounted on the chassis.? Of course, there will be different implementations of dials amongst the three major types but you can use a C Line PTO in an R-4A, R-4B, T-4X or T-4XB (in addition to the C Line).? Note that the Twin PTO¡¯s do not interchange with any of the TR-4¡¯s. All TR-4 versions will interchange with each other. The TR-3 also has a 6AU6 active element, like the R-4 and isn¡¯t interchangeable with the TR-4.? 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. R4C/T4XC new op questions
Group, My twins came back from being worked on by Ron, WB4HFN.? While on a HW-16 budget 50 years ago, I coveted these rigs and thought it would be cool to try them after a slight delay.? Had my first QSO with K6GVG on 40CW today. The questions: 1.? Are there clearer driver and PA tuning instructions than those in the T4XC e-copy manual??? 2.? Is there a way to lower that 850 Hz CW sidetone volume? 3.? Is there a way to turn down the volume of my transmitted CW signal in the R4C when operating both RX and TX; using my TX signal as the sidetone? 4.? Seems to me a good way to operate CW is using both radios; spotting my transmit signal on the station that I wish to contact, then using the receiver as a BFO...? Thanks & 73 Jay W6CJ |
Re: L4B Chimney size (K7CBR, VE7RF, WB6KBL)
Joseph K7CBR
The new blower moves over twice the air of the factory blower through the same sk406 chimney. I did the direct comparison using a hand held anemometer... held at the same location and distance above the outlet of the SK-406 chimney. I forgot now what the original velocity and CFM values vs. new ones were/are. I measured this to avoid any confirmation bias. It was nice to see Jim (VE7RF) confirming my findings. As I stated a long time ago, it is not enough to have one person just say it/measure it. Even though I was careful to do empirical measurement. If this is the grid bias with no drive it is the operating point of the amplifier. If I understand what you are doing correctly (and I may well not be) the bias establishes the operating point of the amplifier so increasing bias toward cut off, i.e. more negative, moves the amplifier toward Class B. That would certainly reduce dissipation in the absence of drive. ? ? Another thought: Does not the tapering of the chimney at the top restrict air flow? It should increase velocity at the plate seal but is a constriction so might reduce overall air flow. Maybe there is something here I am not getting. Re: L-4B Blower Wheels
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI am late to this thread apparently there is discussion about L4B and similar blower wheels slash assemblies I have an original L4B blower complete I believe the blower wheel is an excellent or perfect shape I will have to dig it out and look at it. Re: L-4B Blower Wheels
Correct, I was trying to get in contact with Mark Huber NO8J to see if he could provide?
where he got the wheels.? He had stated that it was a manufactured by Torrington and was available. Anyone have another email address for him? He's on QRZ but haven't been able to
contact him there? either.
