Re: Drake MN7 Tuner Knobs
I worked 60 DXCC entities on 10m alone over the weekend. At least 40 on each of the three other bands I worked. This is what sunspots can do. :)

Re: Another TR7 Journey begins
I'm not sure how a wattmeter issue could cause the meter to deflect full left. It would seem like a diode would have to be reversed, unless it is shorted and RF is somehow getting into the IF/Audio board. You have something strange going on there. You can eliminate the wattmeter completely from the equation by disconnecting the FWD WM wire from the Low Pass Filter module.
Does any of the wiring or parts show evidence that it has been worked on or altered? 73 -Jim NU0C On Sun, 03 Mar 2024 09:14:42 -0800 "Bill NZ0T" <nz0tham@...> wrote: Thanks again Jim, and DUH on the fixed switches.? I haven't had a chance to exercise those yet but I will. -- 73 -Jim NU0C |

It was a DX contest. Not much DX on 40 daytime...

Re: R4B AVC issue
Resistance is the most important here. We now need to measure the TP2 voltage from startup to a point long after warmup.? If this value drifts towards 0V then there is a chance that you have a gassy tube. The important part here is if the voltage at TP2 with respect to time. Re: R-4B troubleshooting, was Cabinet repainting
Yeah, just looking at the relatively soft material they are crimped to makes me nervous. Once they start to loosen up the end is near. I don't like to mess with the legs at all.

Be very careful bending the legs. Those crimps are not very robust. 73 -Jim NU0C It's not bad if one uses some needle nose pliers to grip the crimp and bend the leg by hand or use another pair of needle nose pliers.? Here's a pic of one of the bad pots and a 25K horizontal mount pot with the legs bent minus the wire for the center.? Hopefully the 1K pots I ordered from the Epay seller will arrive Tuesday and I can continue troubleshooting the R-4B. 73 Stan KM4HQE |
Re: R4B AVC issue
HI again! Tak for linked Glenn, kunne godt minde lidt om mit problem :). Okay enough "Danglish" .. @Steve, Thanks for taking your time to reply! Detuned and with AVC ON, TP2 voltage is-1.26, right now, I did an adjustment cold, so seems to have dropped ever so slightly after proper warm up. RF GAIN Pot measures ~12Ohms(seem to be some capacitance) with wires attached, so guess that is quite okay. Re: Cabinet repainting
The original Krylon that I was using was discontinued and replaced with the 51613 a few years ago. It's still available from Walmart, although I think only via mail order. I see the price has gone way up, by about double. I used to get it in the stores for around $8 and now it's $18 plus shipping.?

Thanks again Jim, and DUH on the fixed switches.? I haven't had a chance to exercise those yet but I will.
Looking at the LP filter module schematic I'm suspecting CR2001 and CR2002 the 1N541 diodes in the wattmeter circuit.? Maybe they have gone bad or leaky and are preventing voltage from getting to the FWD/REFL and ALC/Wattmeter? cicuits which IMO would explain the non-functional wattmeter and wonky ALC.? I'll need to check voltages and see what I find.? Doesn't look like much fun replacing those diodes without taking the module out and THAT looks like a real PITA.? Oh well! 73, Bill NZ0T |
Re: Drake MN7 Tuner Knobs
You MAY find CLEAR Knob Skirts separately,
that you can attach to rear of the 1-1/2¡± or 2¡± diameter knob. Clear circular Skirt and its numbering could be DIY Maker/Fabricated. Since you have ONE of the proper Knobs and Numbered Skirt, this makes the Maker Process far easier (Correct measures and Indexing). w9gb |
Re: R4B AVC issue
Michael, what is the voltage at TP2? ?There are other resistors in the bridge circuit and I have seen them go out of tolerance.? What is the resistance reading across the RF GAIN pot? 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. R4B AVC issue
Hi group!
Recently I acquired an R4B(my first B), have a C line and a TR4C, so not my first rodeo ;). But this R4B is really teasing me a bit, the S-meter is "stuck" at S5 as soon as the unit is switched to "ON". So I tried an S-meter calibration but to no avail, Q4 checked out just fine, just for sanity check I also tried to switch the 2 12BA6's(No change). Also the the S-meter "Zero" has be to be cranked all the way to one endpoint to reach the S5 as minimum deflection. Now what may be a lead is that no matter what position AVC is in(OFF/FAST/SLOW) it makes no difference the meter sticks to S5. So any ideas, pointers, measurements, and I would be grateful, first time I dig into a R4B AVC issue. Kinda starting to think a resistor has wandered off, but where to start... Thank you all for a great group, I really enjoy to read all the wise comments and suggestions ect, it's a great group! Best 73's de Michael - oz8abr |
