T-4X (late) vs T-4XB
Hi, gang! I have my T-4X in front of me.? I was fortunate to have obtained my A Line from a friend who had had it in storage for around 20 years.? I have replaced the can cap and other electrolytics but otherwise, this is a completely unmolested set with a QC tag indicating that it was inspected on 11 May 1967 by 'WF' -- could have been Bill Frost :-) The serial number is 13307B (yes, there is a letter on this one!) and is the second latest T-4X in Ron's database. Aside from the dust, it looks almost new. I suspect that the change in the function switch occurred around the same time that the addition of the crystal characteristics and could have been Drake using up the last of the front panels and chassis before rolling out the B Line.? The mic jack is still on the front panel, the PLATE AMPS meter still goes to 0.4 and it completely appears the same as a T-4X, otherwise. I will attach a photo of the function switch in a reply to this, as I'm composing this on my computer and took a photo with my phone (it's just easier...). In the meantime, can any of you who have later T-4X's take a quick look at your transmitters?? In particular, the fastest way to see if it has the later function switch is to try transmitting SSB with a plug in the KEY jack.? If you can get modulation, it's the later version.? Also note the serial number.? This was a functional upgrade to the transmitter that is not really practical to retrofit.. Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Fruit flies like a banana.

The Collins 618T-2 and HFS-900S are 2 examples. While I don't know anyone with a privately owned HFS-900 (they're something like $50K) I do know people running the 618T series of vintage Collins HF radios (along with SunAir and others) that only operate on even-kHz "channels" and they are effectively excluded from those 1/2kHz nets.? They all only tune in 1 kHz steps 2-30MHz I don't care where anyone wants to operate but I also wonder why would anyone want a published net frequency to be one that excludes anyone?? ? -- 73/RickWA6III*Every post is created using Linux |

I think you are right Mark.? I just hurts those guys to work off "CHANNEL".

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýRick, I think the 0.5 kHZ is for those operators that do not have a real or vintage radio(s). ? Ya know the ones that have those blasted radios with the digital/pan adapter screens or the radios in a plain black box with no knobs the (un-radios).Mark On Mar 23, 2023, at 9:52 PM, Rick WA6III <myr748@...> wrote:

Re: T4XB Major Bummer
Peter,
?Yes, it's the T4XB that I need the switch for I'm not sure if the T4X is the same, also Steve mentioned that the T4XC is different and he is correct on this the T4XC switch will not work. These switches are not assembled like most rotary switches using a rivet they seem to be pressed together with a pin like system. If you or someone else has this switch and are willing to part with it all I need is the wafer not the whole switch. I would just snip the wiring going to the wafer then detach the wafer via the two nuts I'll clean up the switch prior to installation. Dave |
Re: DRAKE TECHNICAL NET UPDATE ( March 19, 2023 )
I'll be sitting down later today and putting all of these nets into a matrix.? It seems that Saturday has more availability from a number of nets/time-scheduling standpoint.? I'll identify the times that have the least competition (because many of us not only have Drakes, but Collins, Swan and Kenwood radios, amongst others). After finding the times, will come the frequencies. Those of you who ran the 20m nets in the past, what frequency(ies) was it on? 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Yes.? You can also tell by the newer ball detent that's held in place by a leaf spring. What is the serial number of this one? Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Fruit flies like a banana.

Re: T4XB Major Bummer
Thanks Steve, you are da man.
I must have a late T-4X, can't tell because the serial number rusted away, hi hi.
I will pull it out today or tomorrow and take photos, Dave pull yours and we can see if it
is the same.? You will have the worst time, I would try to save as much wire as you can,
mine I will just clip all those.? I posted photos just a couple weeks ago of all 3 of my T-4Xs,
all have a different switch!? But, the last section looks (casual look) like it is the same, it just
moved towards the back,? the added section on the late one is the middle section.

Re: T4XB Major Bummer
IIRC, the last T-4X's have a switch layout that is identical to the T-4XB and they have the same number of wafers, whilst the earlier T-4X's had one less wafer.? I was going to try and update a T-4 to be able to operate in SSB/AM when a key is plugged in, because on the schematics, it appears (at first) that there were relatively minor changes that would allow that to happen.? Then I discovered the "extra" switch wafer! I don't remember off the top of my head what the serial number is on my late T-4X but will retrieve it after lunch, when I go back down to the shack and resume rebuilding my desk layout. 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? C Line switch is different. The power control moved there, so I¡¯m betting that there are other differences.? Dave: Wouldn't you know it's one that's buried in wiring too....makes ID pretty difficult from a picture. Remind me again....is it a T-4X or T-4XB you need this for?? I can pull either one (or a T-4XC) to see it up close and personal, and then go looking for a suitable wafer.? It is unlikely that I have the exact switch, unless the one in the T-4XC is identical....which is a good possibility. I have a relatively?complete T-4XC parts rig on the shelf. I'll start looking after moonset on Sunday afternoon.? I'll be chasing CY0S on 2m EME. 73 Peter VE7PS On Fri, Mar 24, 2023 at 7:21?AM W6MQI via <w6mqi=[email protected]> wrote: On Thu, Mar 23, 2023 at 08:54 PM, wb6ogd wrote: |

The 4 lines use the same knob setup.. except there is only one phenolic reducer.? And, it has a split in its side? so it can shrink as the screw is tightened. The config in my photos is stock. The bushing on the shaft is there to isolate the mode knob from the bandwidth selector. Yes, this rig had some corrosion from humid storage. But that's merely cosmetic on the outside. All switch movement works perfectly. I got the complete 2-C, 2-NT, and 2-CQ station for a very low price. They are very early production units with serial numbers in the 40's. The 2-C had a broken crystal switch on the side, otherwise they merely needed recapping. One rectifier was bad but was easy to diagnose due to the smoke (hi). Works like a charm! ? -- 73 de Steve K9NUD .. Nothing happens until someone calls CQ! |
Re: T4XB Major Bummer
Dave: Probably not the same.? I'm not at home so cannot start digging into the details.I will be home in a few days though, and can check out what parts I have/don't have and even if the switch isn't correct, there may be a wafer?that would do the job, seeing as yours sounds like it's toast.? Changing a wafer is NOT a job I'd like to do every day, but I have done it successfully on a TR-6 many moons ago and the rig is still working fine. Can you get a good pic of the damaged wafer?? That would?help both Gary and I find you something that would "drop in"....and I use that term loosely! 73 Peter VE7PS On Thu, Mar 23, 2023 at 8:13?PM W6MQI via <w6mqi=[email protected]> wrote: Peter, |

Does it look like that?
Is anyone and expert on T-4Xx mode switches?? Steve?
This one? is in a late T-4X (I think its late), Dave needs one with 3 sections like this but for his T-4XB.
