Re: Drake 2C on 28.0 to 28.5 MHz

What I was thinking was to cut the top of a HC-6 off and solder a 24.5 Mhz HC-49 to its pins.

Don't know if that is doable tho'

Re: Drake 2C on 28.0 to 28.5 MHz

Well that didn't work, so I copied and pasted my older post.?

Thanks for the responses regarding my crystal needs. One of the links led to a company that had the 24.5mhz in an hc-6 can but it was priced at $30.00 + shipping + tax. That made it a $40.00 xtal!

I found another way that was super cheap and is actually a better solution.?

A while ago when I was restoring my Drake 4a, I ran into the same issues looking for extra band xtals, so what I did was to purchase xtals in hc-49 cans which had leads. I then cut some sections od PC board pads previously purchased from QRPME. Using an hc-6 xtal as a pattern, I drilled holes, cut pins from rods purchased from Ace Hardware, soldered the pins to to the PC board, and then soldered the crystal to the pins. After I checked them out in the receiver I potted them in 5 minute epoxy.?

Now to the Drake 2C. I remembered that I made a 16 mhz xtal for the Drake 4a, and figured that one of the harmonics would be 32 mhz. Subtract 4 mhz, and you are at 28 mhz which is the bottom of the 10 meter band. I plugged it in, switched the 2C to 10 meters using the xtal calibrator, peaked the preselector at just below full clockwise, and it worked!? The best part is it now tunes up using the main black tuning scale instead of backwards using the red scale.?

I checked everything out running my Ten Tec Argonaut V into a dummy load while listening on the Drake 2C.

These hc-49 crystals are dirt cheap costing about $1.00 each from the many electronics suppliers, and even cheaper from Aliexpress. If you make a few band crystals, by the time you are done, it will probably cost you about 2-3 bucks each.?

I plan on buying some more to cover other bands.?

I hope this helps others.

Re: Drake 2C on 28.0 to 28.5 MHz

Edited

I used an hc-29 16-mhz xtal and a home made holder. 16 x 2 = 32 minus 4 gives you 28 mhz. Works well. Cheap too.

Here is a link to how I did it in a previous post,.?

Wanted: Drake R8B

Looking for a Drake R8B in excellent or better condition and no smoke exposure. The VHF module is highly desired, but not a deal breaker if the radio doesn¡¯t have it.
I am good on QRZ. Thank, Lynn ku7s

Re: T4XB Major Bummer

Dave,
Ok, I got figured out how to package it so it should get to you with no damage.
Its too late today so I will take it to the post office on Monday.

Re: TR7 Extender Boards for sale. And a bad DR7 board, maybe.

Bill, do you know the nature of the problem(s) with the DR7? If the counter/frequency display section is not functioning but the "All Band Coverage" with the push button Up/Down controls does work, I would be interested. To contact off list, my email is good in qrz.com.

Green is usually glass-epoxy, which is a better substrate.

Front panel removal is pretty easy. ?Because you¡¯re replacing the last wafer, you¡¯re fortunate. It¡¯ll be plenty of work to actually replace the wafer, though.?

TR7 Extender Boards for sale. And a bad DR7 board, maybe.

I was cleaning out my shack and found my set that I bought about 10? years back. Don't recall ever using them.?

I also found a DR7 Board that I blew up and replaced with a new one. Not sure if that is worth anything, but Jim Shorney told me to save it a few years ago. Hi hi. I fried it by leaving the top cover of the TR7 off and keying another radio that was hooked up to a attic antenna directly above.? At least that is what I remember at the time. Maybe a clue as to what may be the issue.

Offers anyone? I'm too tired to google. :-) I may still sell my TR7 also.?

Re: T4XB Major Bummer

Getting back to the original topic..
Dave,
I pulled the last section out of my late T-4X.? Does this look like what you need?? Don't worry about the black tarnish, it conducts great I am told.
Wow, it was hard to get it out, to put it back in is going to be a job for you.
As you can see in the photo, I had to pull the front panel to remove the nut holding the switch so I could get a screwdriver and nutdriver in to take the
wafer off.? Before that I had to remove the crystal switch and shaft.
If that is the switch you need, give me your address and I'll send it down.

I believe it is in an HC-6 can and needs to be a 24.5 MHz XTAL.
Or an HC-6 can of any frequency that I can take apart and marry a 24.5 MHz HC-49 XTAL to it.
Maybe someone may have a different idea?
