Re: TR-4C(W) Improved Amplitude Modulation

IF? you are going to RX? AM,? use the fastest AGC? available.? ?Then zero issues when selective fading on 40m comes along.? Zero issues when listening to anyone who is transmitting CC AM modulation, like the drakes use.

Continental in Dallas Texas,? uses CC? AM? on their? 100kw/300kw? AM? SW broadcast PA's.? They have a dip switch option of? 0-1-2-3-4-5-6 db cxr reduction.?

AGC on RX is just a simple RC setup.? On the R4C, they parallel the? RC setups when switching from fast (cap only), to medium, to slow.? ( med + slow both use a RC network).

IF ur? agc is fixed....and way too slow, it's dead simple to speed it up a little, or a lot.? ? It's also easy to use a 500k? / 1 megohm pot? ?+ cap? to make a fully adjustable RC / agc? setup.? ??

Speaking of those switch schematics...

Good afternoon, Drakesters!

I'm currently working on an early T-4 Reciter that I got in a swap late last year.? My R-4A and T-4X are working and can work together but I thought it would be different to use the T-4 for my A Line setup on the operating bench. The problem is that the T-4 was initially working in CW, TUNE and SSB but now only works in CW, where I am getting decent output from a wildly mismatched (in appearance, anyway) set of 6JB6's.? I've decided not to worry about them, as I'm able to get over 100W out on 20 and about 70W on 10.

Yesterday, I started trying to troubleshoot when I suddenly lost TUNE and SSB.? I seem to remember that the two are related -- that TUNE is created by putting a constant tone through the mic amp (V9).? I have checked the resistors, both hot and cold and they're within spec.? Voltages on V9 are close to the chart values.??

The diodes around this circuit all measure around 0.5V forward and open reverse-biased.

The rotary switch has had DeOxIt applied, sparingly.

At first, I thought this was a heat-related issue but it still wouldn't work earlier this morning, after an overnight period to cool down.

Any suggestions?

John K5MO,

Concerning the interpretation of rotary switches, see note one: all rotary switches are show in the extreme CCW position. ?The dotted line is connected to the switch title showing the function of all positions, shown in the extreme CCW position. ?There is typically one wiper per switch segment and there may be multiple segments in each pole of the switch. ?The dotted line indicates the mechanical connection between the knob and all the poles; there may be many poles. ?You can thick of it electrically as a multipole¡ªmulti-throw switch.

Michael,

I am not all that familiar with the older Drake transmitters (T-4, T-4X) but based on some complaints I have read about,? it appears that Drake may have intentionally set them up to produce a very low (2-5w)? un-modulated carrier power output.? I have no doubt that would have caused noticeable fluctuation effects at the other end in receivers,? AGC on or off.

I am pretty sure they intended the T-4XC to put out a little more power.

Mine has done somewhere around 12-13w since it was new (& I know this because I bought my C-line new in the mid 70's) So they must have intended to increase it in newer models.

I cannot say the same about my TR-4C (that also does about 12-13w carrier output) because I didn't buy it new.? Someone could have modified it over the many years before I got it.

But I can say categorically that around 12W works seamlessly and most don't notice I am using Carrier Control unless I mention it.

As far as the receive selectivity of the TR-4C goes, I think it would only be a problem if 2 people were talking back and forth using TR-4's with SSB filters.? Each station might be constantly tuning to get the best fidelity in received audio.? It would be a good test I suppose.

I too have corresponded with Nobel.? I would LOVE them to produce slightly wider filters for the T-4X transmitter series and TR-4 transceivers.

Installing the INRAD 2.5kHz filters in my TR-4C made BOTH the receive and transmit audio much more pleasing to listen to.

I think I got one of the last filter sets for the TR-4 from INRAD.....? evidently they're not available anymore.

Guys,
REgarding the ad from yesterday, Sorry about that un-working QRZ Email address ... that being the ARRL.net address, for W2OR.? The boys in Newington, CT said they're working on it.

As of today, 6 July, a new Email address now appears on QRZ.? Thanks.

The Drake-4 Line parts and nine 6JB6 tubes, mentioned in the original ad, are still available.? There are now a few photos of the parts, seen now on the Groups.io "Photos" tab.? ?

I'm not a Drake owner, and am unfamiliar with prices (other than EBay), so please, send an email, and just make a reasonable offer.? Thank you.

p.s. for George2:? Yes, I'm new to this Group.? Yes, my callsign did appear in the original ad.?

Re: TR-4C Large Size Schematic Availability

I have a huge blowup of the drake schematic for the TR4C here (2'x3' or so). The scan that's in Garey's disks have enough resolution to be useful at this size.

PS: I wish Garey had done a dissertation on how to interpret Drake rotary switch schematic representation!

Re: TR-4C(W) Improved Amplitude Modulation

Rick,

Your report is very useful. ?An un-modulated carrier of 10 W appears to be a good value; I hope to check the resting carrier level in the TR-4CWRIT soon. ?As you say, the unmodulated carrier can be adjusted, if necessary. ?Noting that I have RIT, the wandering stations are not such a problem, but I may need to adjust frequently. ?I can use the 2-B, if desired. ?I¡¯ve ask Noble Radio to design filters for the TR-4CW.? Frank said that he had many requests for this, and is on his list of things to do, last I spoke with him about a year ago; I expect he has been busy. ?I can connect the L-7 if more power is needed.

Thank you.

Michael, N4KZO

Re: L7 Amp meter needed

I have found an 83T meter on ebay and invested $25 in it.? I am not really sure its an appropriate movement as the face says 50 MV, not the 200 uA.? Hopefully its right or I can use a shunt resister with it.? I have a picture of the face, but do not have photoshop.? I can use paint to C&P the background color over the needle and the Avery label is a great idea for what to print it on. Hopefully next week i can get the amp on the bench to see what else might be broken.? I assume there are other problems which is what took out the meter in the first place. I'll probably start checking voltages and such before i put the meter in lest i just blow up another one.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help and thoughts.
