Re: Where to buy solder?

Charles Rodecap

Hello???? I was out of my better solder and needed more of what made soldering fun again.

I found KESTER? 63 / 37 1#? on e-bay for about $22.00 at a seller in Ohio that was in March.

Re: Where to buy solder?

I'd imagine that you can still buy quality (non-Chinese, Non-ROHS compliant) solder from suppliers on Ebay or via the normal Newark/Mouser etc.

I'm nearing the end of the supply I got when Digital changed their approved manual solder specification and scrapped out hundreds of rolls of Kester solder in our location alone . I snagged what I thought would be a lifetime supply? before it went in the dumpster but I lived longer than expected!

I need the following component values for the L 7 amplifier. ?The values are not on the schematic, and I have no parts list.
1. ?C43, C46, and C47, each air variable capacitor range.
2. ?Inductance values of L9, L10, and L11.
3. ?Inductance value range of variable inductor L8.

As far as the scarcity of the small connector from the power strip to the C-4: Not my area of expertise, but I would think something like that would be reproducible with a 3-D printer. Anyone with such interested in attempting it and reporting back to the group?

Tom:

Congratulations on getting the C-4.? It's a nice addition to the 4-line station.? I find that the stations accessories that Drake offered with the 4-line and the 7-line is a big part of what made these stations so special.

Not sure if the 10 minute reminder to state your callsign is valid anymore - it never was up here in VE-land anyways.? At one time it was 30 minutes and at the beginning and end of a QSO.

Phone patches are pretty useless these days, but I still use the clock on one of the C-4's and the wattmeter and the accessory switch to select speakers.? I have used the antenna switch too, though not at the moment.? That will happen again, possibly even this summer as there will be some major changes.? I also want to try hooking up a Hy-Gain rotator to that control, just for fun too, as have never done that.? I just acquired a free Hy-Gain Tailtwister control box with a blown meter so this is a good time to try that out!? I'll probably throw in a Brake Delay system which I am hoping will get around the issue of the absence of a brake release switch on the C-4.? Need to check that out further, though I think at least one individual on here said they were using the C-4 with a later Hy-Gain rotator without issue.

And yes...I use the powerbar.? I have one C-4/powerbar controlling the power to the 5/7-line desk and one to a 4C and 4B line desk.? You can see these on my qrz page.? The 4-line desk is actually using a home made "powerbar-on-steroids" I made 15 years ago or so to control 220VAC to a Collins 30L-1/30S-1 and KWS-1, in addition to an L-4B.? There were plenty of extra outlets as well.? Making your own powerbar is not hard, requiring a good 220VAC contactor-style relay, a small 110VAC relay as the latch (if the contactor does not have a spare set of contacts), and a bunch of barrier strips, all built into a big Home Depot junction box.? I have pics and schematics if needed/interested.? One of the hardest parts to find is simply the 3 pin C-J connector that plugs into the back of the C-4!

If you have the Drake powerbar, it is worth checking the wiring.? I found that one of mine had the neutrals and the hot leads backwards on the 110 VAC plugs!
