Vernier drive

I'm thinking about going ahead and replacing the vernier drive for the
plate cap on my L-4B.? I got a pointer from Max-Gain for the vernier.?
The new vernier seems a bit tight to me, but I've only tried it with a
1/2" or so diameter knob.? It may be much easier to turn with the larger
2" knob.? Question for the group is does one lubricate the vernier drive
as routine maintenance??? If so, what does one use to lubricate it?

Jim,

Thanks for the cap info. Will get an orrder in shortly. Want to do some in-circuit testing first. I am beginning to think I might actually be able to do this!??

This is the list from my Mouser project file. Note: I usually order extras beyond what I need, especially if I am near a price break. I am also attaching my log of measured values of the old caps if you need any convincing on the Capars. Open Office spreadsheet.

Re: Outer Coaxial Jacket Removal for a Long Length

That's basically what I said. All that is needed for a vertical "dipole" is a quarter wavelength of wire and a common mode choke a quarter wavelength back down the shield. The outside of the coax shield will happily radiate, regardless of the insulation. But everyone seems to want to do more work than is necessary. :D

Re: KLM 20-30-6LPA Wind Load Information and Tower Recommendation

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi Mitchel,

?

There isn¡¯t a standard height, but my guyed Rohn towers range from40 feet to 70 feet.? While I have two Yagis per band 20, 15 and 10m, plus one on 40m, on long skip the 20m Yagi at 70 feet is at least 1 S unit stronger on average on long skip (1000 miles +) than the one at 40 feet.? I am in rural Colorado with flat terrain with 100 feet difference in elevation. ??

?

A 50 foot free standing tower will be more expensive than guyed, but installation and maintenance will be easier. Are you talking about a crank-up tower or a fixed self-supporting tower?

?

I have two Orion 2800 rotors for my larger Yagis and four Yaesu 2800 rotors for the other Yagis.? They have all worked flawlessly for about 5 years replacing six TailTwisters.?

?

Due to RFI from home appliances, my towers 200 to 350 feet from my house are quieter than the ones within 30 feet of the house.? You may not have an option as to where to locate a single tower.?

?

In general I would suggest 70 feet, but do what makes mechanical and cost sense.? I wish my 40m Yagi was at 130 feet but it isn¡¯t !? I struggle breaking EU pile-ups in contests being in Colorado with a Yagi only at one half wavelength.

?

Photo attached, all Yagis are mono-band.

?

Nothing is more significant than the best antennas you can install over any modern or even vintage Drake transceiver or twins.?

?

My 5-element Yagis are between 65 and 70 feet, and my 12m Yagi is at 80 feet simply because it is mounted 10 feet above the 40m Yagi.

Re: RV75 Issues

Rick:

On the RV-75....

Confirm the broken resistor IS a 10K ohm, like the one next to it.

The burned one on the side of P/J 206 is 150 ohm.

The manual instructions for programming the dip switch frequencies has an error in it somewhere as I recall.? Thought I had that figured out a while?back....but no...didn't work as expected.? It was a lot simpler and quicker to just start flipping the dip switches and checking the results using the TR-7.? You get the hang of it quickly that way and see your results/mistakes right away.? Forget the mathematical way!

I have those Capar electrolytics?in mine too, as do you.? I need to change them, though the RV-75 is working fine....for now.

Why do people keep calling me Steve?

Right off the top of my head is you may be seeing power source issues due to failed caps. The Capars are evil incarnate, but it would not be a bad idea to recap all of the electros.

I have too many project right now, so don't even ask. :) Two broken amps to fix, a third for another ham, two FM rigs for yet another fellow, two Alpha amps to clean up and put online, and the list goes on....

I began checking out a new-to-me RV75 this AM and am seeing some issues I
dont yet understand. These are:

1. While the RV75 seems to be working in a basic fashion, the frequency
displayed on the TR7 varies by as much a 2 KHz over time, even with an
extneded warmup and without touching the tuning knob.
2. It is nearly impossible to set the frequenciny to the desired 100 Hz
increment; very small movements of the tuning knob produce a few hundred Hz
change in the displayed frequency.
3. The "Fixed Frequency" feature does not display the programmed
frequency. Programming is a bit convoluted but I have verified several
times that the switch settings are as described in the manual.

This is a a late serial number RV75 in very nice overall condition and was
serviced by Ron Baker in 2015; his invoice shows only minimal work needed.
My TR7 works as expected with an RV7 in place of the RV75.

So, wondering how best to proceed. Problems may be pilot error due to lack
of familiarity, but if so, not clear what the pilot is doing wrong. I have
a manual but am reluctant to dive into troubleshooting without a better
understanding as to what might cause these symptoms. Any guidance
appreciated.
