Re: It's that time
I’ve been lurching into the creation of a spreadsheet so that my XYL has something to start with if I suddenly depart. I do need to include tools.? I’ve sold about 70% of my coins already. Collections are fun in the acquisition, then sit in a safe. I’ve decided to cash them out, keeping a few favourites.? This post does remind me that I need to finish that.? He had two working homebrew all band HF amps - not really up to snuff with appearance per my requirements, but chock full of 813's, 4-400's, big heavy Hammond HV xformers, roller inductors, and big caps.? There was a box of new 4-400's and another full of 813's. Three working rotators including a Tailtwister.? He told me that if I didn't take it, he would take it to the dump that day.? He's in a suddenly desperate situation with the health of his wife, his own health, and his house/property is sold. He walked away from a shop full of tools, including power tools, most of which will be for the new owner to sort out what stays and what goes. Now I have to figure out what to do with them.? But I just couldn't let them go to the landfill. I still have to rescue an HF GEM quad with enough spare spreaders and spiders to make 2 more, an MA-40 crank-up, which is now on the ground, and a TA-33 triband beam. Plan now - I know I am, though it will be a bigger job than it was! 73 Peter VE7PS On 2021-04-02 7:12 a.m., Jeffrey Angus wrote:

Re: L75 Amp Main Power Switch Availability
Yes, I will be careful not to switch bands while tuning.
Also forgot to mention:
- I protected the meter with two diodes back to back the same way ?I did with the old Collins 30L-1.?
- Added soft keying circuit to protect my radio. Before I had 28 VDC on the relay input. Now I see 1.2 VDC.
- I run the Amp from an Ameritron ICP-240. This saves the Amp from the in-rush current, saves its power switch and protects it from surges.
?
The photo shows it produces 3.0KV?
?
?
Was using only 200W on FT-8 and behaved well. Worked new Asian countries with a dipole on 20 meters.
?
?
The problem with the Relative Output problem has now been fixed too.
?
Now I am in need of a tuner like the Drake MN2700 to lower SWR on a couple of bands.
?
Can this amp be used on WARC bands? That another reason I need the MN2700.

For all those Drake collectors out there in radio land. A few weeks ago I temporarily? shut down ‘The Heathkit Shop’ website’ cause I wasn’t feeling so hot. It will be back up sometime this year. I had hoped for sometime this summer. However, on Friday the 26th of March, my clock stopped. Taken to hospital and had my pipes cleaned and had the roto-rooter run though them. Apparently, I had (have) microvascular angina. I drove myself to the North Lawrence fired department where they took me to the hospital. One stint inserted, but the rest of the plumbing seems to be okay. More doctors to see, and I have enough pills to start my own drug store now I’m still kicking, just not a high as I was I could have went sideways. Re: Status of the Heathkit shop
I agree with Richard. I had triple bypass over 20 years ago. The recovery wasn't pleasant and takes longer than angioplasty, but it certainly made a difference in how I felt within just a couple of weeks.

Indeed. I was taking walks two days later.? I was on Plavix for a year and then they took me off it (it was affecting my stomach). Looking for a decent MN2700
Guys, you know I recently restored a Drake L75.
I am looking for a MN2700 Matching Netwok to fully enjoy my L75 and obtain the best of it. My antenna is a Barker & Willianson's multiband folded dipole BWD 5-30 that has served me well all these years and will continue but, in a few bands, requires a little tweak to tune. If someone has a Drake MN2700 available for sale please let me know. Only AT I have here is an old (also restored) MFJ-941E, but is only good up to 300W. 73 Rob YS1RS |
Re: Status of the Heathkit shop
If Mike had angioplasty he will be whole almost right away. In a strict sense it is not surgery, they do not open you up.? The stents are applied through an artery, usually in an arm or leg. The arteries of the heart are stretched with a sort of balloon and the stent is installed. The stent is a sort of plastic window screen like tube that holds the artery open and allows normal blood flow in the heart. They want to watch you for a few days but after that you have a normal life with a great deal more energy than before the procedure. It is modern magic. The drugs I was given were a powerful blood thinner that also makes the corpuscles slippery. It is to prevent clots. I was also put on a statin, that is something to control cholesterol and prevent further clogging of the arteries. The thinner can be a bit of a bother but there is usually not much side effect from either. Mike may also be getting a blood pressure medication and will be taking a small amount of aspirin, which is an adjunct to the blood thinner.

?? I am going into some detail because others in this list are probably candidates. It is nothing to be afraid of and far easier than heart surgery. ?? If you have any sort of heart pain, or anything that could imaginably be heart pain get checked out. You need see a good cardiologist. They may want to do a stress test, which is simply putting you on a treadmill while connected to an electrocardiogram machine. They will want to do an echocardiogram, which is done with an ultrasonic probe and doesn't hurt at all. This will tell them the condition of your heart. Unless you have something unusual an angioplaty may be all that is required and will both stop any angina (heart pain) and extend your life many years. ?? Lots of people never even heard of angioplasty even though its now fairly common. A Google search will find lots of authentic information about them. ?? I am harping on this because mine saved my life and perhaps letting others know may save theirs too. On 3/31/2021 7:57 PM, Ham Radio wrote:

Re: L75 Amp Main Power Switch Availability
When needed I run around 700 Watts on digital modes from a pair of 3-500s. The plates show a nice red color after an FT8 TX cycle, but that is good for them. They need to be run with some color in the plates to de-gas. Don't baby that tube! :)

Do exactly what the docs tell you (no more and no less) and hopefully,? you will be doing another PCB design by the end of summer. Time to catch up and read some? good books. God bless. -- 73, Bernie. VE3FWF |
Re: L75 Amp Main Power Switch Availability
Just an update.... finished upgrading my L75.
Used the L75 for the first time the last night.
As reported by an old Heathkit HM-102 meter, I was able to obtain 500 watts output with 50 watts input on CW on 40 meters to a Heathkit Cantenna Dummy Load.?
Compared that read out against a Collins 312B-5 console and there it shows 600 watts. But the Relative Output function of the L75 shows way less.
Tried to adjust the Relative Output with the pot on the back of the L75, reaching the end of adjustment, but was only able to reach 300 watts. So something is still wrong there.
?
Apart from that, was able to use the amp to make a few contacts on SSB, CW without problems.
I kept an eye on the meter and adjusted accordingly to the manual (dip the plate and loading) thus not exceeding the plate nor grid mA stated there.
?
Also made a lot of contacts on 40 and 20 meters FT8 not exceeding 200 mA on the plate of the L75 (20 watts on the exciter) and performed very well. Got new countries into my log. I know this amp is not designed for digital 80% duty cycle modes but can be used with great care with very low input limiting thus the output.
?
Tested other bands and did well too. Only bands that I heard small arching was on 160 and 80 against a dummy load. Don't have an antenna for those two bands any way. From 40 and up was OK no arching.
?
So that concludes my report. Have to check on the Relative Output circuitry to find out why is not reading well. i did adjust the meter for Plate and Grid according to the manual with a 1.5 VDC battery... 73 Rob YS1RS |
