Re: Large amount of Drake gear in latest Schulman web auction
You might be surprised. At least in my area hams won't pay very much for used gear. Schulman's auctions bring respectable prices. 73 -Jim NU0C On Fri, 26 Mar 2021 13:17:55 -0600 "Myron Babcock" <kl7yy.radio@...> wrote: This must be a last resort way of unloading years of boat anchor radio equipment. Re: WA8AJS, Jeff's Mod for TR7 to Lower Power Output
It seems technically sound but IMO it is a solution in search of a problem. For decades hams have just reduced output by turning the mic gain down and it works fine. A separate power level control can encourage overdriving of the low level stages if you are not careful with your settings. I considered it and chose to not. 73 -Jim NU0C On Fri, 26 Mar 2021 08:31:10 -0700 "ko4bg" <ko4bg1@...> wrote: Has Anyone ever tried this Mod and How well does it work? Woody

Greg: The TR-4C was originally supplied with a 43.0 Mhz xtal for that range. Back in the '70's there was far more activity above 28.5 than there is now.? The 42.5 Mhz xtal for 28.0 - 28.6 (+++) coverage was optional, as was the 43.6 Mhz xtal for 29.1-29.7 Mhz. If you look at the pictorial of the chassis top in the manual, you will see the xtal positions marked. 73 Peter VE7PS On 2021-03-26 1:18 p.m., Greg Anders wrote: I need to go find a crystal to put my TR4C on 28.5-29.0 Mhz.? Re: Large amount of Drake gear in latest Schulman web auction
That would save a lot?of issues but I am sure the cost of that service is not cheap. I guess that is why I am seeing more ham gear on craigs list?for really low prices and at the local Goodwill,Salvation?Army Store and other discount?stores. A family several years ago told the wife of a passing ham to just give all the ham gear to goodwill.? After filling many ham items in an outside goodwill bin which was later picked up she realized that probably was not the thing to do.? After talking to a ham who arranged other hams to stop buy she made over $6000 that day on the remaining items.? However some equipment?was missing control heads or radios or amplifiers and the heavy power supplies were left behind.? I know of a $5000 UHF Lunar 1KW amp that went to the goodwill?store here in Colorado.? I got the power supply as it was too heavy for her to pick up.? I saw that Lunar 1 kw amp at a Hamfest here in Colorado a year later who purchased it without the power supply in a Goodwill store on the other side of the state.?

Most of us old guys figure it is the fastest to sale and less lugging BA¡¯s to the fedx store hi hi..
Dave¡¯s site brings some top dollar these days and the nice thing he checks everything out and lists what is does and does not do. So you are not buying a hit or miss ebay items.

Re: Large amount of Drake gear in latest Schulman web auction
Yep I went nuts in the late 80¡¯s and bought everything I could get my hands on hi hi.. about 10 years ago I was setting looking at the stacks of gear on both sides of the work shop and figured if I retired and spend 8 hrs a day restoring
I would not live long enough to get all the gear done. Had a Ham in N.C. come over one day and I filled his big SUV full. His son rode back with a radio under his feet and one in his lap.. hihi.. I think we got 35 or 40 units stacked into that suv. Just about
bottomed it out ?been selling off stuff a few items a year. Now I am down to a few dozen radios and 50 bins of parts hihi.. going to sell my 4.5 ft rack soon with an SX62A run 2 an R388/URR ?SX 101A ?R390A and a WWV Comparator. Been my listening post for a
long time. The Hallicrafters were bought new the rest I picked up years ago. It is sad that the new guys have no ideal what this gear can do. Or how to keep it running. If it is not plug and play they are lost.

Re: Need Crystal freq. for 28.5 mhz in TR4C
Greg:
The TR-4C was originally supplied with a 43.0 Mhz xtal for
that range. Back in the '70's there was far more activity above 28.5
than there is now.?
The 42.5 Mhz xtal for 28.0 - 28.6 (+++) coverage was optional, as
was the 43.6 Mhz xtal for 29.1-29.7 Mhz.
If you look at the pictorial of the chassis top in the manual, you
will see the xtal positions marked.

Re: Large amount of Drake gear in latest Schulman web auction
There is a guy near me who always has a number of Drakes and other vintage
gear on his EBay page.? I often wonder where he finds all this stuff
locally as I seldom hear about it being offered.? I¡¯ve seen him at the
local swap meets and he runs around and grabs all kinds of gear just to
re-sell.? I have too much gear as it is, but not too worried about thinning
out the collection just yet.? It should be interesting to see how hamfests
recover once we can return to that posture.
