Hey guys, I'm going to
be doing a input coil adjustment on my L7 amp. Eimac
tubes are getting very soft and I'm replacing them
with RF Parts matched pair.
I've done this before and i'm very aware of safety
procedures. It's been awhile.
I just want to clarify a few things before I start.
Procedure (F) I take it that the plate control should
also be in the centre of the band I am adjusting ,
this is not mentioned in procedure. Also when
increasing exciter output to achieve a .400 amp.
reading on the grid meter, procedure (I) is this
correct because my other L7 manual said plate meter.
Lastly when tuning the plate control for dip in plate
current, procedure (J) is it a greatest dip possible
or just a slight dip in plate current??

Re: L7 input coil ajustment
Howard:? ?Please forgive me if this is a somewhat?disjointed note as I am still in the hospital but with the promise I will be home today after 4 days here.
The input circuit is to tune the input for the resonance of the input combined with the cathode driven section of the tubes.? That is essentially why the recommendation to return if the tubes?are replaced.? Since you are replacing the manufacturer, then it is good advice to do the tuning of the input RF circuits.
Note the instructions defeat the HV to the radio.? You may wish to just unscrew the HV lead from the power supply at the L7.? Insulate this connector as in this arrangement you will have plate voltage available.
While you have all the radio and stuff opened, you may wish to do the add to provide 10M capability to the unit.? There are instructions I am sure on this procedure on the internet.? It involves?removing the bar blocking the band switch from going one more position towards the right and adding two capacitors.? You can see this on the schematic.
There are several procedures to accomplish the tuning:
As Per The BOOK:
There does seem to be a confusion on the nomenclature for the metering that you are to watch.? Note also that the radio does not measure Plate current directly:? it measures the cathode?current as the voltage levels are less there.? So the two meters (as I remember) are the Grid Current, plate voltage, which the manual calls this the grid meter.? The other meter measures the plate amperes and this is the meter that the instruction (erroneously) calls the grid current meter.? You would be using this plate current meter for this method. Otherwise the instructions are clear as to what to do.? Using this method I have not turned up the input power so that I read .400 amperes?on the plate current.? For when I have done this, a lesser current was used and the tuning was ok.
Using AN? Antenna Analyzer Method:
With?the plate?voltage?disabled as the instructions?call for (or unscrewing the plate lead), place an antenna analyzer to the input.? You will need to have the unit on with the tubes installed.? The exciter will be needed to turn on the transmit function of the amplifier so keep the output power of the exciter at zero.? On the appropriate band, adjust the band coli for minimum SWR on the meter.
Using the unit as is without any power supply disable action:
A least desirable?method is to simply load the unit on a band and adjust the input coils so that you are getting max power to the tubes.? You do not have to run this at high power either from the plate voltage side or the exciter side.? Be careful, you have plate voltage inside the unit; that is why it is the least desirable?method.
I have done all three and each more or less arrives at the same tuning.? For each band, you should set the exciter frequency for the middle of the band you are going to adjust.? Use only the power needed to get a reliable reading on the meters.
Of all the methods, I use the input antenna analyzer.? Since the whole reason for the adjustment is to adjust the input circuits to the point of resonance (lowest SWR), then you may wish to try this.
Each method works.? Be clear, be safe and Good Luck.

That was me and it was a mistake. In my haste to increase my bid to $1050, I accidentally entered $10,050. The final price means the other person had a max bid of $3500!

Re: R-4B AGC Issues, Part Trois
David,
I am thankful you are able, in your present condition, to communicate. ?Hear the encouragement that the LORD has given us. ?Here is eternal power:
The counsel of the LORD stands for ever, the thoughts of His heart to all generations. ?Psalm 33.11
For whatever was written of old was written for our learning, that we through patience, and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. ?Romans 14.5.?[The word ¡°might¡± does not confer a random variable. ?Here, might is the noun perfect tense of ¡°may.¡± ?Recall perfect tense definition as applied to grammar, expresses an action of being perfectly past or finished, often that which is just past or compete, but without a specification of time. ?Hope is the certainty of the Truth, the Word. ?Another way to accurately read this verse is, ¡°Although not being given a specific time interval, we have absolute certainty that the promises of the Almighty are sure (faithful); His providential care gives us comfort to wait upon Him for completion or deliverance with respect to the needs.¡±
God has said this once; twice have I heard this; that power belongs unto God. ?Also unto Thee, O LORD, belongs mercy; for Thou renderest [gives up; surrenders] to every man according to his work. ?Psalm 62.11-12
O LORD, Thou wilt give us peace; for Thou also has wrought?[effected; performed; produced]?all our works for us. ?Isaiah 26.12
Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His Holy name. ?Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits. ?Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle¡¯s. ?The LORD executes righteousness and judgement for all that are oppressed. ?Psalm 103.1-6
But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that reverence Him, and His righteousness to children¡¯s children. ?Psalm 103.17
The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold; but the LORD tries the heart. ?Proverbs 17.3
In summary, this is the Word from Holy God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, being justified by faith, let us have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; through Him we have been brought by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and are proud in the hope of this glory of God. ?And not only so, but we also glory in our tribulations; knowing that tribulation perfects patience in us; and patience, experience; and experience, hope; and hope causes no one to be ashamed; because the love of God is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given to us. ?Romans 5.1-5
Whoever believes in Me, just as the Scriptures have said, the rivers of living water shall flow from within him. ?He said this concerning the Sprit, which they who believe in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified. ?John 7.38-39 ? God has made it so, by the raw and refined materials given to us, and by the knowledge of His Creation (physical phenomena and mathematics), to glorify Him with world wide communications; He made the ionosphere. ?Rest well. ?Your work awaits, you.
Grace and peace to you on this Good Day;

Patience is what most need more of, including myself.? I¡¯ve ask God for all the attributes of the Spirit.? He is healing my soul, mind, and spirit; He can do the same for you, or anyone, just ask Him and believe He is able.? Recognizing errors and areas that need improvement is a gift from God, because it is difficult for us to accurately assess ourselves.? There¡¯s a negative bias from the Adversary that exists sometimes that can create complete cut-off, when all that is needed is a little grid-leak for nominal operation.? Considering the circumstances today, I never dreamed as a boy I would see all the types of trouble that exists in this world.? So, we need to calm down, slow down, relax a good bit, and trust God to guide.? I would rather have Peace within and be healed of faults or worries than all the Drake B or C Twins in the whole world, brand new, with all the desired improvements.? The Word says to be quick to listen and slow to speak: I¡¯ve found it¡¯s really better, and wise to remember this.
