Re: TR7 - 40 meter oscillation
I don't know if this will be helpful or not but I noticed that in later version Drake shortened the wires between the HPF and LPF modules and added several ferrite beads. I have attached some internet pics with examples. Beads have also been found on one of the wires connecting to the ALC board but I need to look at one to tell you which.
There were also several changes to the 2nd Mixer board which I think has been discussed here recently that seem to be at least in part stability related. One of my rigs was demonstrating some bat-feces crazy instability because of leaky driver transistors. *Very carefully* measure the base voltage of the drivers and finals in RX. It should be very close to zero volts. 73 -Jim NU0C On Sat, 20 Apr 2024 14:57:57 -0700 "Raoul Meunier via groups.io" <rmeunier@...> wrote: Jim, thanks very much for the explanation on the value of the capacitors. Re: L7 makes alot of smoke
Bob, Glad you found the issue which was along the line of a parasitic, self-oscillation, or frequency multiplying. ? Some of the newer amps have circuitry to prevent incorrect bandswitch positions which is almost a requirement for solid state amps. ?Good luck with the repairs and informing us of the causative factor. 73, Evan, K9SQG

Re: L7 makes alot of smoke
After a serious full inspection it seems that the only damage was the parasitic plate chokes and the coupling capacitors C39 and 40. I have spare parts coming from RF Parts so should have the amp up and running early next week.? Will keep everyone apprised as to final results.? Lots of careful inspection and cleaning of all areas have been accomplished.

Re: TR7 - 40 meter oscillation
Jim, thanks very much for the explanation on the value of the capacitors. I don't have Tantalums at home but I'll try electrolytics.
Regarding the oscillation, I ended up installing a ground strap at the point you mention in the HPF. You gave me this tip in the past and it worked for me in that case. After that, I got more "room" to increase the pre-driver pot but it's still oscillating past that. I'm getting some 30 Watts on 10 meters now.? It's strange that this problem occurs in some rigs, not all of them. I believe it's due to the sum of many little factors that contribute to get the oscillation and one needs to cure all of them to get to a happy end. I'll keep on searching. I'll come back with more info. Thanks again! 73, Raoul |
Re: TR7 - 40 meter oscillation
Hi Raoul,
I'm thinking the caps essentially follow the resistor color code. Brown-black-blue = 106, or 10000000 pF, 10uF. I could maybe measure one later to confirm. Try this: Slide the cover back on slowly until you reach the point where the oscillation recurred. This will give you a hint to the sensitive area. In my case I found it to be the rear board of the HPF module. This is where I placed the ground strap at the upper rear corner which finally cured it in two of my rigs. This seems to me to be a problematic area because the HPF module (including the ALC board) has SIX coaxial cables connected to it that run to various points in the radio and only one chassis ground at the opposite corner near the speaker. 73 -Jim NU0C On Sat, 20 Apr 2024 08:11:07 -0700 "Raoul Meunier via groups.io" <rmeunier@...> wrote: Hi All, |

Re: L7 makes alot of smoke
Bob, Thanks for the added info. ?When you said the amplifier went dead I thought all power to the RF deck was lost thus the filaments were not illuminated, meter lights out, status indicators out, ?etc. ; that's why I thought the breakers might have tripped. If one uses the B+ line as a reference, it seems like there are problems on the tube side as well as the RF output side. A parasitic/self oscillation could probably cause something like that, and possibly if the amp is operated as a doubler or tripler (e.g. if the bandswitch was in a band different than the exciter). ?Wonder ?if there is any damage to the RF safety choke across the output or if the bandswitch contacts were damaged. In any case, I'm curious to learn from your inspections and recommendations of the experts on the Reflector. ?Please keep us posted, we'd all like to learn. 73, Evan, K9SQG

Both of the Parasitic Choke resistors were kind of burnt. That may be because of parasitics as C39 and 40 were the blown capacitors. I don't think the breakers blew as it seems when the caps went I lost HV. Haven't checked the PS to see if the .82 resistor blew, been cleaning up the area around the tubes.? All the RFC's look ok, no burn marks and check out with an ohm meter.? I have fully grounded grids as I did that not too long ago.? Resistance between grid and filaments check ok. Along with resistance between grid and plate. I really think some type of parasitic oscillation took place while on 15 meters.? I will carefully clean and replace those bad components and then bring it up gradually. So much for trying to contact Easter Island as they were on strong last night at 221262.00. I could hear them very well about a 58 here and would have liked to have that contact. 73? Bob |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI got the 3296P-1-103LF (10k ohms) and 3296P-1-102LF (1K ohms).? They are horizontal adjust which puts the trimmer towards the top of the radio.? Just a personal preference.? I haven't gotten around to installing them yet.? Too many other projects. An R-4B to align, T4X to figure out why it's not putting out any power now and a mini lathe I'm upgrading with a longer bed.? Does anyone have a list of the pot values otherwise I will go look them all up. Also do you have the part number to buy either from Mouser or Digikey? You will not regret it. When I do it I measure the existing pots so I can ballpark the new ones before I do the alignment. Makes it a bit easier.
