Radio Today 9 August 2021 National stations Rádio Jemné and Europa 2 in Slovakia are set to be acquired by Bauer Media. The deal will add to the company’s presence in the country alongside Rádio Expres. Paul Keenan, President of Bauer Media Audio told RadioToday: “Slovakia is an important market for us and is forecasted to grow strongly in the medium term. “This transaction presents an ideal opportunity to grow our operations in the country. Radio Jemné and Europa 2 are successful stations with loyal audiences and perfectly complement Rádio Expres. The move will enable us to attract new listeners, introduce exciting audio innovations and provide an even stronger offer to advertisers. We are very much looking forward to working with the talented teams from Rádio Jemné and Europa 2.” The announcement follows acquisitions by Bauer Media Audio earlier this year in Ireland and Finland. The company now reaches over 57 million listeners weekly across eight countries. Completion of the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval.

I wouldn't dare to say it was a hoax, but rather a false information. What abandoned FM was NRK public radio and some commercial networks. As in many countries, the main recipient of this operation was public radio: concentrating the four national networks in the same multiplex, surrender hundreds of broadcast sites (they were 700), stopping the maintenance of antennas and downgrading the End of life FM transmitters. All of this would have resulted in great economies of scale. Only 40 % of the remaining frequencies were cut off by private networks and major commercial radio stations, especially in the capital and major cities. 12 October 2021 In a statement Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel (CSA) President Roch-Olivier Maistre said: "The deployment of DAB+ in France has entered a new phase with the launch on 12 October 2021 of 25 national radio stations in Paris, Lyon and Marseille, integrating all the agglomerations located on this route. Today, digital radio is already a reality for 30% of the population and DAB+ receivers are present in all new passenger vehicles sold in France. 16.12.2021 A decade after digital radio launched, Germany is seeing accelerating growth for both listeners and broadcasters. Digitalradio Büro Deutschland, the joint-initiative between broadcasters, receiver manufacturers, and network operators in Germany, declared the 2021 the “best year for DAB+ since 2011.” According to the Büro, 2021 saw a 30 percent increase in number of digital radio receivers in German homes and cars over the prior year, and DAB+ signals are heard in about 27 percent of German households, some 11 million people. 15.12.2021 Radio France CEO Sibyle Veil and CSA Board Member Hervé Godechot shared their views on the DAB+ deployment in France at the WorldDAB Summit in November. “DAB+ is a broadcast mode that is ecologically interesting. The transmitters are more powerful and can broadcast more radio stations on the same frequency. These are important issues for us in the future.” Two new national multiplexes have been launched, covering the major motorway corridors of Paris-Lyon-Marseille and carrying 25 DAB+ stations including six national public services from Radio France. In the next 12 months, DAB+ will switch on in a further 26 areas, with a total of 465 stations carried on the new multiplexes. (Red Tech)

RBR+TVBR By Adm Jacobson December 30, 2021 As 2021 comes to a close, the subject of AM radio’s continued viability in the coming years has arose anew, driven by the decision of companies including Cumulus Media to surrender the licenses of stations that have had their fair share of challenges. While some may shed a tear over these station’s final broadcasts, there is a bigger, more fundamental question that needs to be asked: Did the U.S. radio broadcast industry fail to future-proof itself when it decided to embrace in-band, on-channel HD Radio instead of progressing to DAB, which much of Europe and Australia have adopted? Yes, and no. While HD Radio has been an underperformer since George W. Bush was in the White House, shifting to DAB would have created two situations the industry worked very hard to successfully avoid. First, media brokers trade AM and FM radio stations based on valuations largely tied to a “POP” statistic derived from a signal contour, and the total reach of a facility. In 2005, that made sense. Today, it’s sort of stupid, given the ZoneCasting follies set to commence, with FCC approval, and the push by narrow-sighted marketers for addressable advertising across every platform — even those built for reach, the greatest tool a savvy and seasoned marketer could ever want or desire. The valuation model is broken. This supports our belief that the industry failed to future-proof itself 20 years ago in not going the DAB route, which has kept radio quite healthy in Europe and in Great Britain, despite the rapid consolidation of owners across the U.K. in recent years. DAB listening estimates for London and the U.K., according to RAJAR, are quite healthy. But what about stick value? Who cares. The value is the brand. There’s a reason why Kiss, Heart, Capital, Xfm, Absolute Radio, GHR, TalkSport, LBC and Magic, among other brands, attract listeners and advertisers. A home at 104.6 or 105.8 on the FM dial has little to do with it. If only American broadcasters put their station valuations on content, rather than signal contour and “POP” value, especially at a time when “you can listen on your smart speaker” further erodes the old-school stick value model. This tarnish to valuations is stronger, and more damaging, to AM radio stations, which didn’t receive “revitalization” with the FM translator but a Band-Aid of salvation by putting it on a band regularly consumed by the majority of radio listeners. Radio Prague International 31 December 2021 Czech Radio (?esk? rozhlas) will stop broadcasting on long and medium wave as of midnight on Friday. Their stations will be available via DAB + as well as on the internet. Until now, the public broadcaster's Dvojka and Plus stations could be heard on medium wave, and the Radio?urnál station also on long wave. DAB + digital signal expands the range of services and covers 95 percent of the Czech Republic. January 1, 2022 Prague (dpa) - Radio reception on medium wave (MW) and long wave (LW) has been history in many parts of Europe for years. Now, in the Czech Republic, at least the public broadcaster will stop transmitting on MW and LW as the new year starts on Saturday. The powerful transmitters on the frequencies 270, 639 and 954 kilohertz could also be received in large parts of Germany. The reason given for the move was the widespread availability of terrestrial digital radio DAB+ and the high costs of broadcasting. Those still listening using medium waves were to be persuaded to switch with a campaign. The radio station Cesky Rozhlas set up a telephone hotline to answer questions. It was not known at first whether the transmitters would be retained or used for other purposes. The antenna of the medium-wave transmitter Liblice B east of Prague is considered the highest structure in the Czech Republic, with a height of 355 metres. Impuls, the most-listened to private radio station, wants to remain faithful to medium wave for the time being. Radio Today 4 January 2022 The recently launched Channel Islands local DAB digital radio multiplex is now full following the launch of GB News Radio on the platform today. The multiplex, owned by Nation Broadcasting, serves 170,000 residents across Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney with 29 radio stations. Nation’s founder Jason Bryant told RadioToday: “What a great start to 2022! Termination of operation of the medium wave transmitter Rimavská Sobota On 31 January 2022, the Slovak Radio and Television will end the operation of the SV Rimavská Sobota string radio transmitter in the Uzovská Panica locality on the frequency of 1521 kHz. The transmitter in the Rimavská Sobota locality broadcast with a radiated power of 10 kW and was used to broadcast Radio Patria 's national broadcast from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. At night, it was supplemented by the broadcasting of the RTVS Rádio Devín program service . The RTVS decision reflects a change in listeners' preferences and allows RTVS to continue modernizing its terrestrial broadcasting. The names of the radio stations have not been revealed, but the write-up describes a young national, independent commercial radio group that uniquely targets a particular genre of music and owns 3 national DAB+ licences. Valuation and Insolvency Agents Williams & Partners Ltd has been engaged to find a buyer for the services, either individually or together. The website says the business has established its reputation amongst advertising agencies over the last three years resulting in advertising spots from some of the countries best known businesses, as well as key Government advertising and generated sales of c?168,000 in 2020, c?495,000 in 2021 and forecasts between ?750,000 and ?850,000 of advertising sales in the current year all without expanding its audience numbers. The three stations have almost a quarter of a million listeners and almost 1.1m listening hours in the latest RAJAR. The description continues to say the business, assets and licences are being offered for sale because the sole funder no longer wishes to fund the business alone and has not been able to find a co-funder and would prefer a new owner to take over the DAB+ licences, with or without the radio stations which currently remain on air. Radio Today 24 February 2022 Union JACK Radio, Union JACK Dance and Union JACK Rock have all disappeared suddenly from the national SDL DAB multiplex. All three services are operated from Oxford by the JACK Radio Group along with three local/regional stations – JACKfm, JACK 2 Hits and JACK 3 Chill. Both Arqiva (on behalf of SDL) and JACK Radio Group would not comment when contacted by RadioToday after the move at midnight yesterday. Union JACK Radio, Union JACK Dance and Union JACK Rock are still available online. Earlier this week, three national services were put up for sale by their investor, who says they no longer wish to fund the business alone. Other services operated by the group remain on the air and unaffected by this move. German broadcaster NDR1 has launched a DAB+ radio giveaway campaign, targeting radio listeners at work. Popular radio personality Schorse is on tour and will personally deliver a DAB radio every day from 7-25 March. To participate listeners simply need to fill out a form saying why they need a new DAB+ radio at work. In recent years, FM has been getting closer to its limits and in several regions of France, FM is saturated, meaning new radio stations cannot develop, and limiting the choice for listeners. In addition, many radio stations cannot be received in more remote locations. In response Arcom (the Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication), issued licences for 25 national radio stations on the motorway axis of Paris-Lyon-Marseille, with the stations launched on 12 October 2021. In the UK, the last remaining bastion of died-in-the-wool, "original-flavour"-only DAB receivers is the range of own-brand radios sold by the major supermarket chains. Which brand will be last to switch? With the new UK digital radio tick mark now specifying DAB+ capability (among other welcome things) to qualify, it can't be long now. With DAB+ services already on air across the UK, and more certain to follow, Wohnort recommends that the own-brand ranges be avoided until they include DAB+. Radio World By T Carter Ross This morning (Mar. 15), a helicopter carefully maneuvered a new antenna into place atop Paris’s iconic Eiffel Tower as part of TDF’s efforts to increase digital radio coverage in the ?le de France. The new antenna increases the height of the Eiffel Tower to 330 meters and marks the third time the tower’s height has been increased thanks to the addition of a broadcast antenna. At its original construction in 1889, the tower reached 312 meters, but the addition of a new television antenna in 1959 increased it to 318 meters, and a DTT digital television antenna added another 6 meters in 2005. It was not announced which digital radio multiplex would make use of the new antenna or how quickly it would go into service.
