Establishing DAB+ Digital Broadcast Radio

开云体育

WorldDAB has published a ground-breaking new book, "Establishing DAB+ Digital Broadcast Radio". It offers a unique, in-depth guide to the regulatory, technical and commercial aspects of establishing a successful DAB digital radio service.
The book provides guidance to new adopters, as well as offering advice for countries which have already started the process, and those who are nearing permanent service status.
The book covers the complete DAB+ establishment process from initial interest through to analogue switch-off. The topics covered include the seven major stages in establishment: (1) initial interest; (2) technical demonstrations; (3) formal standard adoption and regulation including coverage requirements and frequency planning; (4) systems planning and design - both transmission and multiplexer network design; (5) rollout activities including construction, content, receivers, and launch marketing; (6) operations, including ongoing content development and sustained marketing campaigns; and finally (7) analogue switch-off.

Absolute Radio abandon AM Radio

6 February 2023 · News
Alan Hughes looks at Absolute Radio’s decision to abandon AM radio.
Absolute Radio, owned by Bauer Media, has switched off 21 AM transmitters.
It does not have any FM transmitters but has 10 program streams on DAB.
They did this of their own volition and their stated reason is “Why can I no longer listen to Absolute Radio on AM?
“We think we sound better on digital, as it offers a much stronger signal and cuts out background noise.
“Lots of you agree, which is why nearly all our audience listen to us digitally. Broadcasting on AM requires running an additional transmitter which is environmentally unfriendly and not cost-efficient given the small numbers of those listening here.
“We’re sorry for those affected by the change, but we hope you find an alternative listening experience that works for you.”
In Norway Bauer Media own 10 nationwide advertising-funded radio channels, Radio Norge, Radio Rock, Radio Topp 40, Radio Vinyl, Norsk Pop, P24-7, MIX, FUN and KOS, KISS and PODPLAY RADIO.
Norway has no AM radio and in 2017 closed all networked FM leaving DAB+ and low powered FM community stations on air. They along with Government owned NRK have experienced the rise in the ratings back to previous levels within 12 months of the switch off, as Norwegians bought DAB+ radios.
You cannot buy a new car which is not DAB+ radio equipped.
None of the electric vehicles sold in Australia will receive AM radio, so how long will it be before they drop FM as well?
DAB+ is the cheapest way when compared to the internet, FM and AM to distribute programs in high population density areas.
The capacity of mobile phone towers is determined by their average traffic at each site. If radio was switched off there would not be enough spectrum to give each listener their own individual program feed particularly at breakfast and drive times.
The lesson that Australian capital city broadcasters should learn is that we have had high powered DAB+ broadcasting all AM/FM programs and more since 2009.
When will broadcasters decommission the 83 AM transmitters and 136 FM transmitters most of which are high powered?
Then the savings of money and greenhouse gas production will be felt just like Norwegians have found.
It should be noted that for all capital cities, Gold Coast and Mandurah require the installation of 21 standby main DAB+ transmitters because a failure would cause a loss many programs to a large audience.

ESTONIA: DAB TRIAL STARTED

Martinique launches the first DAB+ multiplex in one of France's overseas departments.

French communications regulator Autorité de Régulation de la Communication Audiovisuelle et Numérique (ARCOM) has authorized the first DAB+ multiplex in Martinique. A ten-station multiplex launched on Channel 5B from three sites on the Caribbean island and is authorized to operate as a trial service through the end of September 2023.

As part of the agency’s 2022–2024 roadmap for digital radio, ARCOM called for interest in launching trial DAB+ services in the “Outre-Mer,” those portions France outside of the Europe. Several islands in the Caribbean, North Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean, as well as French Guiana in South America, are regions, collectivities, or territories of France, and broadcasting in these areas is overseen by ARCOM.

An event at Casino Bateliere Plazza in Sch?lcher on Jan. 23 highlighted the new service, which launched with nine channels, including five stations from i-Médias Group’s Radio Fusion, including four new specialty channels. Also on the multiplex are Maknet Jazz, Mixx FM, Radio ?vangile, and Radio Identité.

AM radio accounts for around 2% of listening - but 35% of radio transmission's energy costs.

Radio Today

Bauer is removing Absolute Radio from Medium wave this month as it turns off all AM frequencies for the station across the country.

Absolute Radio launched exclusively on AM (as Virgin Radio) 30 years ago in 1993 using predominantly 1215 kHz along with fill-in relays on 1197, 1233, 1242 and 1260. Some of these have been turned off in recent years in places such as Devon, Merseyside and Tayside.

Whilst this is a historic milestone for the radio industry, it shouldn’t affect many listeners as just two percent of all radio listening currently takes place on AM.

Absolute Radio also lost its FM frequency in London in 2021 in favour of the ever-expanding Greatest Hits Radio network.

The move makes Absolute Radio a digital-only service, broadcasting nationally on DAB and online.

1215 kHz – or 247 meters, was previously used by BBC Radio 1 when it launched, and later, BBC Radio 3. Prior to 1967 it was used by the BBC Light Programme.

In addition, Bauer has also announced licenses carrying Greatest Hits Radio in Staffordshire and Cheshire, Bradford & Huddersfield and Teesside will also be turned off.

GHR is available on FM in West Yorkshire and will soon be available on FM in Staffordshire and Cheshire.

Switzerland prepares to cut FM

Redtech

By Frédéric Brulhatour

Geneva
December 22, 2022

After multiple postponements, Switzerland’s FM switch off is planned for Dec. 31, 2024. The main reasons for the digital migration are to minimize operational costs and increase diversity through a more extensive frequency offer.DAB+ allows more radio stations to operate, which is currently difficult given the saturated FM band. Local radio stations can also broadcast over a much larger area than that limited by their FM signal.

Moving completely away from FM will minimize costs for stations, which will no longer need to fund two broadcast technologies. In addition, digital broadcasting, whether via DAB+ or the Internet, offers listeners better listening quality and associated services.Three-quarters of radio listening in Switzerland is already digital (DAB+ and online) — only 13% is exclusively FM.

Switzerland decided it would stop using FM over 10 years ago, but there has been some pushback. “Today, the radio landscape has evolved, but not necessarily in the direction imagined 10 years ago. If the transition to DAB+ is obvious, I’m not sure that being so determined about stopping FM is a good thing,” says Sébastien Rey, director of Rh?ne FM, one of the regional radio stations with a concession. “As experience in other countries shows, maintaining simulcasting beyond the scheduled dates should be considered.”

Energy efficiency and the sustainability of radio broadcasting in Spain

开云体育

15.03.2022 - Spain

In the context of rising electricity prices, and with EU appeals for the sustainability of resources and the corresponding progressive adoption of renewable energy sources to reduce dependence on other sources of electricity, it may be worthwhile to open a reflection on the energy efficiency and sustainability of radio in Spain. Says Javier Sanchez: "Not only are notable electricity savings achieved thanks to the fact that DAB+ is much more energy efficient than FM, but also the number of transmitters and transmitter centers is reduced, with the reduction in operating costs that this entails."

Italy - Roberto Sergio: we are pushing the FM shutdown from 2025

15.03.2022 - Italy

Roberto Sergio, director of Rai Radio, spoke to Italia Oggi: "Both I and the top management of RDS believe that the time has come to push decisively on switching off the FM and strengthening the DAB. We are proposing the start of the shutdown of the plants starting from 2025, to arrive at a complete switch off to digital in 2030. If we give up the towers, the traditional systems, we will have crazy savings in the electricity bill, we will consume less energy, we will pollute less without all those towers."

A DAB+ Boost Adds 6 Meters to Eiffel Tower

Radio World
By T Carter Ross

This morning (Mar. 15), a helicopter carefully maneuvered a new antenna into place atop Paris’s iconic Eiffel Tower as part of TDF’s efforts to increase digital radio coverage in the ?le de France.

The new antenna increases the height of the Eiffel Tower to 330 meters and marks the third time the tower’s height has been increased thanks to the addition of a broadcast antenna. At its original construction in 1889, the tower reached 312 meters, but the addition of a new television antenna in 1959 increased it to 318 meters, and a DTT digital television antenna added another 6 meters in 2005.

It was not announced which digital radio multiplex would make use of the new antenna or how quickly it would go into service.

A report from France Bleu Paris noted that the installation was successful, despite a little rain and mist. Reporter Rachael Saadoddine captured the installation on video:

Own-brand DAB+ radios

开云体育

In the UK, the last remaining bastion of died-in-the-wool, "original-flavour"-only DAB receivers is the range of own-brand radios sold by the major supermarket chains. Which brand will be last to switch? With the new UK digital radio tick mark now specifying DAB+ capability (among other welcome things) to qualify, it can't be long now. With DAB+ services already on air across the UK, and more certain to follow, Wohnort recommends that the own-brand ranges be avoided until they include DAB+.
Caveat emptor!

France - Paris-Lyon-Marseille

开云体育

In recent years, FM has been getting closer to its limits and in several regions of France, FM is saturated, meaning new radio stations cannot develop, and limiting the choice for listeners. In addition, many radio stations cannot be received in more remote locations. In response Arcom (the Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication), issued licences for 25 national radio stations on the motorway axis of Paris-Lyon-Marseille, with the stations launched on 12 October 2021. Coordinating the entire radio ecosystem and informing listeners about DAB+ remain challenging, with progress too fast for some, and too slow for others.

Three national Union JACK radio stations disappear from DAB

Radio Today

24 February 2022

Union JACK Radio, Union JACK Dance and Union JACK Rock have all disappeared suddenly from the national SDL DAB multiplex.

All three services are operated from Oxford by the JACK Radio Group along with three local/regional stations – JACKfm, JACK 2 Hits and JACK 3 Chill.

Both Arqiva (on behalf of SDL) and JACK Radio Group would not comment when contacted by RadioToday after the move at midnight yesterday.

Union JACK Radio, Union JACK Dance and Union JACK Rock are still available online.

Earlier this week, three national services were put up for sale by their investor, who says they no longer wish to fund the business alone. Other services operated by the group remain on the air and unaffected by this move.

Valuation and Insolvency Agents Williams & Partners Ltd has been engaged to find a buyer, either individually or together.

The website says the business has established its reputation amongst advertising agencies over the last three years resulting in advertising spots from some of the countries best known businesses, as well as key Government advertising and generated sales of c?168,000 in 2020, c?495,000 in 2021 and forecasts between ?750,000 and ?850,000 of advertising sales in the current year all without expanding its audience numbers.

The three Union JACK services on the Sound Digital mux had almost a quarter of a million listeners and almost 1.1m listening hours in the latest RAJAR.

Three national DAB+ services up for sale by sole owner

Radio Today

23 February 2022

Three national DAB+ radio licences have been put up for sale via the Insolvency Marketplace website IP BID.

The names of the radio stations have not been revealed, but the write-up describes a young national, independent commercial radio group that uniquely targets a particular genre of music and owns 3 national DAB+ licences.

Valuation and Insolvency Agents Williams & Partners Ltd has been engaged to find a buyer for the services, either individually or together.

The three stations have almost a quarter of a million listeners and almost 1.1m listening hours in the latest RAJAR.

The description continues to say the business, assets and licences are being offered for sale because the sole funder no longer wishes to fund the business alone and has not been able to find a co-funder and would prefer a new owner to take over the DAB+ licences, with or without the radio stations which currently remain on air.

Radio Today has contacted the Group for comment.

A reminder - Slovakia - SV Rimavská Sobota 1521 kHz closes today

Termination of operation of the medium wave transmitter Rimavská Sobota

On 31 January 2022, the Slovak Radio and Television will end the operation of the SV Rimavská Sobota string radio transmitter in the Uzovská Panica locality on the frequency of 1521 kHz.

The transmitter in the Rimavská Sobota locality broadcast with a radiated power of 10 kW and was used to broadcast Radio Patria 's national broadcast from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. At night, it was supplemented by the broadcasting of the RTVS Rádio Devín program service .

The RTVS decision reflects a change in listeners' preferences and allows RTVS to continue modernizing its terrestrial broadcasting. The funds so far intended for signal propagation via the Rimavská Sobota medium-wave transmitter will be invested in the development of Slovak Radio's digital services, in particular in DAB + broadcasting.
