Do Whatever You Can (I)
?
A Torah scholar once posed the following question: If one has failed to concentrate while reciting the Shemoneh Esrei prayer and finds himself near its conclusion, with what approach can he inspire himself to pray the remainder of the prayer with proper concentration? The scholar offered a solution by way of a parable:
?
A young girl was standing in the marketplace with a large basket of apples for sale. Suddenly, a thief approached and began to snatch apples out of the basket. The girl became confused and stood helplessly, not knowing what to do. Someone who was watching from a distance called out to her, “Why are you standing still? What are you waiting for —that he should grab everything? Just as he is grabbing, so should you grab-? whatever you can get will still be yours!”
?
And so it is regarding prayer. If one was overcome by lethargy and mindless daydreaming at the start of the Shemoneh Esrei, and suddenly finds himself near the prayer’s end without having “grabbed any apples,” this does not mean that he should give up and leave himself with nothing. Rather, he should strive with all his inner strength to concentrate on the remaining blessings.
?
And so it is, exactly, with shmiras haloshon. You stumbled this morning and spoke the forbidden? Then stand ready this afternoon to overcome your evil inclination and refrain from forbidden talk. And if you fail in the afternoon, nevertheless, strengthen yourself to do battle once more tomorrow. Surely Hashem will help you to succeed, for “one who seeks to purify himself is granted Heavenly assistance” (Shabbos 104a).
Do you know someone who needs a refuah shleima? A shidduch? Or perhaps a meaningful yahrtzeit is approaching? As a merit for a recovery from illness or for a departed family member you can sponsor a daily email and have over 8,000 people, every day, learn and be inspired as a z’chus for your loved one. The Imperative of Halachic Study
?
Knowledge of the Aggadic teachings regarding loshon hora must be complemented by study of the laws of proper speech. In the words of Midrash Mishlei (1:2): “‘To know wisdom and mussar [inspirational,
ethical instruction]’ (Mishlei 1:2) — If one has wisdom [i.e. knowledge of halachah] then he can study mussar, but if he lacks wisdom, then he cannot study mussar.” The Midrash’s intent is clear: If a person is not knowledgeable in the laws of a given topic, then no amount of mussar will help him.
?
For example: If a businessman thinks that a given practice is not robbery, [when, in fact, it is] then what good will it do to inform him of the severity of the sin of robbery? The same applies to all other negative commandments. Therefore, one must study the Torah’s laws to know what is permitted and what is forbidden, and he must also learn the mussar teachings which inspire a person to fear Hashem. Through study of such teachings, one arouses his soul toward observance of Torah, aside from fulfilling the positive commandment, “Fear HASHEM, your God” (Devarim?10:20).
?
And so it is with regard to shmiras haloshon. Of what benefit will all the mussar in the world be, if one convinces himself that a given forbidden statement is not in the category of loshon hora?! Or, if he tells himself that the laws of loshon hora do not apply when speaking of a certain individual [when, in fact, they do]?!
?
Therefore, it is imperative that one know what is and what is not in the category of loshon hora according to halachah. This study should be complemented by inspirational study of the relevant Aggadic teachings.
Do you know someone who needs a refuah shleima? A shidduch? Or perhaps a meaningful yahrtzeit is approaching? SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
Purpose of This Volume
?
There are many factors which can cause a person to speak loshon hora. The three primary factors are:
?
(1) A lack of awareness of what a Jew is and is not permitted to say. It is in response to this that we have compiled Sefer Chofetz Chaim, which is a code of laws of proper speech.
?
(2) Satan’s powerful efforts in this area, as he seeks to indict us Above and to cause our prayers to be rejected (as stated in the holy Zohar, which will be cited in a forthcoming chapter).
?
(3) Ignorance of the methods through which one can succeed in avoiding the urge to gossip. As Scripture states, “For with strategies shall you wage war for yourself” (Mishlei 24:6).
?
It is in response to the second and third factors that we have authored this work (Sefer Shmiras Haloshon), a compilation of Aggadic teachings from the Talmud, Midrash and the holy Zohar, which speak of the great reward, in this world and the next, for guarding one’s tongue, and of the retribution that can result from the terrible sin of speaking loshon hora.
?
We have also labored, with the help of Hashem, to compile from the thoughts of our Sages many methods and suggestions for how to escape the snare of the sin of loshon hora. It is our hope that this will inspire and aid the reader to overcome his inclination to speak the forbidden, so that he can develop the precious, sterling quality of shmiras haloshon.
?
Because this present work contains many topics that are of vital interest, it is therefore exceedingly precious to me. Therefore, I have given it a title of its own,1 Shmiras Haloshon, based upon the verse,? “One who guards his mouth and tongue, guards his soul from tribulations” (Mishlei?21:23).
?
  1. I.e. Though this compilation of Aggadic teachings and insights is actually another section of Sefer Chofetz Chaim, the author gave it a title of its own.

Food for the Soul
?
“One who guards his mouth and tongue, guards his soul from tribulations” (Mishlei?21:23).
?
“Which man desires life, who loves days of seeing good? Guard your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit...” (Tehillim 34:13-14).
?
Why do the above verses single out shmiras haloshon, guarding one’s tongue, as the key to a good life in both worlds?
?
The human body is composed of 248 organs and 365 sinews. Corresponding to this are the 248 spiritual organs and 365 spiritual sinews of the soul. As Scripture states: “You clothe me with skin and flesh, cover me with bones and sinews” (Iyov?10:11). The various parts of the body are referred to as “clothing” and “covering” for they clothe and cover the soul within man. Each physical organ corresponds to a specific aspect of the soul.
?
Hashem has given us 248 positive commandments and 365 negative commandments which relate to the particular parts of the body with which they are performed.1 By performing a given mitzvah through a given organ, a spiritual light comes to rest upon the corresponding component of the soul; it is from this light that this component draws eternal vitality.
?
Thus, when a person fulfills all the Torah’s commandments, he transforms himself into an adam hashaleim, man of spiritual perfection, whose every fiber is sanctified unto Hashem.
?
The converse is true as well. If a person commits a transgression and does not repent for it, then the component of the soul which corresponds to that prohibition will suffer accordingly.
?

Can lifestyle medicine help reverse my health issues?

Question: What’s an example of an impressive lifestyle medicine success?

?

Alan answers:

A few months ago I spoke about our successes with difficult medical cases. Here’s a new one to add to the list:

Mr. F came to The Wellness Clinic to stabilize cirrhosis of the liver. After 3 months of guided lifestyle changes in both eating and activity/exercise, Mr. F went for new blood work. What a difference - 37 point drop in cholesterol, a 10 point drop in blood sugar!

But what we really notice is a much better liver function. There is a substantial drop in a key liver enzyme, indicating that his liver condition is not only stable but is indeed REVERSING! The power of lifestyle medicine is quite amazing!

Here at The Wellness Clinic, we can help you achieve your healthy living goals.?

The Peddler’s Potion
?
It happened that a certain peddler was making his way through the towns near the city of Tzippori, calling out as he went, “Who wishes to purchase a life-giving potion?’’ People crowded around him [to obtain what he was offering].
?
R’ Yannai was sitting on his balcony studying Torah. Upon hearing the peddler’s announcement, R’ Yannai called down, “Come up here and sell me your potion.’’ The peddler replied, “Neither you nor those like you need it.’’ However, R’ Yannai persisted until the peddler agreed to come up. The peddler opened the Book of Tehillim (Psalms) and read, “Which man desires life?... Guard your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn from evil and do good...’’ (Tehillim 34:13- 14). R’ Yannai said, “Shlomo too declared, ‘One who guards his mouth and tongue, guards his soul from tribulations‘ (Mishlei?21:23).
?
R’ Yannai reflected, “All my life I read this verse, but never perceived its full meaning until this peddler came along”1(Vayikra Rabbah 16:2).
?
While on a visit to Eretz Yisrael in 1936, Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter, the Rebbe of Ger (and author of Imrei Emes), wrote the following in a letter to his followers in Poland:
?
I also seek the following from you: As the tribulations befalling our nation have multiplied both within and without, and our Sages, with their trustworthy insight, have taught that the causes of this exile are loshon hora and sinas chinam (baseless hatred), I suggest that all of you study Sefer Chofetz Chaim and Sefer Shmiras HaLoshon ...Heaven and earth bear witness that upon completing the above-mentioned works I felt within myself a positive effect. Even those who are of wholesome character will feel a positive effect from studying these works.
?
Though the peddler told R’ Yannai that “Neither you, nor those like you, are in need of this potion,’’ R’ Yannai troubled the man to come up to him, to demonstrate that everyone is in need of it.
?
?
  1. R’ Yannai had never understood why David taught this lesson in the form of a question and answer. After meeting the peddler, R’ Yannai understood that because people so easily transgress the laws of proper speech, it is therefore necessary to draw their attention to this matter by making a public announcement such as the peddler did (Maharzu).
?
?
Congratulations and Mazel Tov on finishing the entire cycle of A Lesson A Day.

Negative Commandments
?
In his introduction to Sefer Chofetz Chaim, the Chofetz Chaim enumerates 17 negative commandments which one may violate when speaking or listening to loshon hora. Below are the negative commandments most commonly transgressed:
?
1) You shall not be a gossipmonger among your people (Vayikra?19:16).
?
2) Do not accept a false report (Shemos 23:1), which prohibits both speaking and accepting loshon hora (Pesachim 118a).
?
3) Beware of a tzaraas affliction, to be very careful and to act (Devarim 24:8), which Sifre explains as a reference to loshon hora for which tzaraas is a punishment.
?
4) And you shall not place a stumbling block before the blind (Vayikra?19:14), by causing others to sin.
?
5) Take care, lest you forget Hashem, your God (Devarim?8:11) through arrogance (Sotah 5a) — a prime cause of loshon hora.
?
6) You shall not desecrate My holy Name (Vayikra?22:32).
?
7) You shall not hate your brother in your heart (Vayikra?19:17).
?
8) You shall not take revenge...
?
9) and you shall not bear a grudge (Vayikra?19:18).
?
10) That he not be like Korach and his assembly (Bamidbar 17:5), who caused strife among the Jewish people.
?
11) Each of you shall not aggrieve his fellow (Vayikra 25:17) through hurtful words.
?
12 (You shall reprove your fellow) and do not bear a sin because of him (Vayikra?19:17) by embarrassing him in the course of your reproof.
?
(The five remaining negative commandments are found in Shemos?22:21; 23:2; Vayikra?19:14; Bamidbar 35:33; and Devarim?19:15.)
